I think a lot of people get scholarships, it just happens that some schools are less generous than others plus I think there is the plus of being an in state resident.
-
Wow this thread is pretty dead. I got that too a few months ago and it was disappointing. I got in anyways after that mishap, but it was still annoying. Did you end up getting in?

Whatever you decide on, congratulations. It seems you want to focus a lot in Asia and from what I have seen UCSD does have good programs when it comes to Asia. Either way, I think you definitely have done well and I wish you the best of luck on anything you decide to do!

Those are great schools and you should be more than proud to get into them. But in my humble opinion their name increase isn’t worth between $27,000-$31,000 in debt. Especially if you are a California resident and plan to stay in CA (I don’t know what your plans are exactly, just assuming) you can’t beat UCSD’s offer. Since you seem interested in international stuff GWU could be good for internships and the like, but it’s not worth the extra cash you have to shell out. I didn’t even apply to John’s Hopkins because I would not want to live in Baltimore (personal preference, you might think differently). But honestly the money is too good at UCSD. I’d take that if I was you.

You might want to consider emailing them just in case. It’s been a rough year for all of us and I can only imagine what admissions staff must be going through. They seem to be fairly responsive so it’s worth a try
-
Wow damn. Congratulations then!! You must be so happy. I thought it was also weird for them to reiterate that same rate stuff, then again for my undergrad at Berkeley, that’s basically what they did so I figured UCSD might be pulling that old card too. Haha. Either way, congratulations. What other colleges are you considering?
-
Does this mean as in no scholarship or a full ride? I read what you posted a few times and I feel like it could mean either.
-
Oh yes. For international students a good aid package is a must. It is twice the price that it is for us California residents so I can imagine it being a financial toll no matter what country you are from. I got into other schools this year and while some have been alright with funding others have been incredibly stingy, so I hope UCSD is pretty good when it comes to that this year.

I think that this could be the case. I know that they promised that their scholarship and grant figures would be released by the 17th of this month (yesterday), but I have yet to receive anything from them. I emailed them and I have yet to hear back. From what I have read before though, if you are nominated for admissions, you are very likely to be fully admitted. At least from what I have read from previous years (and this was the case for myself as I was admitted). Are you a California resident? Since that will also impact your ability to pay for it since it is a lot cheaper (unless you can pay out of pocket). What got you to like UCSD so much?
-
Did you apply for MIA or MPP? Maybe it takes a slightly different amount of time for each. I heard back from MPP so I can't comment on the other programs offered by GPS. But I hope that you get in since you seem like you are really excited to go!
-
Yes. I heard back last week that I was officially admitted. Just waiting on their grants and scholarships.
-
Did anyone else get a not that great financial offer? I only got offered $6000 for Luskin
-
I was shocked about this too since we were supposed to hear back today. I emailed them to see what was going on but I had not heard back. Either way, I think that we should give them until Friday or so before panicking too much. Given the pandemic and all I honestly don't blame colleges for being a bit behind with their info and all. It really is hard to manage a place like this and have to meet everyones expectations as best as possible given their work situations. But at the same time I also get super anxious! I can't help myself!

Have not gotten word back from BSG yet, but I suspect that rejections will come on Thursday or Friday so we will have to wait and see.

I took a few hours to think of the things you mentioned and I think you are right. Having travelled to other states and having seen just how different they are, California is a world of its own in that regard with much more extensive regulations than any other state and I think the value of such a regionalized education is priceless in that regard. I already went to a UC for my undergrad (Berkeley) so UCLA would be a good fit to also study in another part of the state and gain a larger perspective. It would have been interesting to consider an Ivy since I didn’t get to go to one for my undergrad degree (Berkeley gave me a full ride so couldn’t say not to that) but in the end this is for the best. Thanks for your advice!

@GradSchoolGradI’d like to answer some of the questions you posed above to get your take on things: 1. My career goals would be to be a city manager or a county administrator in CA (home state). 2. I’m interested in the areas of social policy/government administration. So more focused on the actual management of the organization as a whole as opposed to meticulous research into any one particular area of study. I’d like more of a holistic view to know a bit of everything to know enough to judge good decisions from bad ones 3. I’ve worked all 4 years of my undergrad in this sort of stuff and I love it so I’m quite sure this is what I want 4. I’m not necessarily into massive, bold innovation. I prefer more level headed, ponderous government thinking as opposed to radical new solutions that try to change everything all at once. 5. So far I’ve gotten into: UCI, UCSD, UCLA, Cornell, UPenn, Georgetown, and UChicago (wait listed at UVA and Duke). Still waiting on Brown and Oxford and still negotiating up these programs in terms of financing (which is obviously a big factor). I would however like your professional opinion as to what you think.

@SomeFolkCongrats on graduating from BSG! Happy that you are here in this years thread. I was wondering if you had any words of wisdom on your experience and what you did that you liked or what you would have done differently.

@Devine123Congrats on Cornell! I got in there too as well as a few other universities across the country. What are your thoughts on Cornell vs Brown. Anyone else can also feel free to pitch in.

Did anyone receive a good funding offer from Luskin?
-
What have you guys heard about UCSD’s Aid from previous years? Anyone know how generous they are? I know some schools so far have been stingy but others have been fairly generous.
-
Damn. Hadn’t seen that. Guess it’s going to come down to the wire. Best of luck to everyone.
