Gotcha. It's a shame that everyone here has to worry about shit like this. I might pop in on next year's thread, but if I don't happen to see your posts in a sea of thousands of posts, I hope next year is easier for you. You've helped us out a lot, thank you.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Another day of waiting patiently.... sending positive vibes to everyone still waiting to hearing back.
I'm trying to redirect my energy so I'll be spending the day meditating, communing with my pet & plants, and hopefully getting into the flow while writing

For those who applied to Columbia and were either waitlisted or accepted, can you tell me a bit about what you wrote for the response to a piece of literature published in the last 10 years? I'm a bit nervous that I botched that essay. I'm definitely not saying that is the only reason I was rejected, but I definitely would like to try to figure out where I may have gone wrong outside of my writing sample. Thank you so much for any info!

Hi, I think I saw your post on draft. I'll respond here. In spite of the unkillable troll on this board, I find the people on draft weirdly more aggressive when it comes to Columbia.
In the info session, I think the Columbia admin said something like they wanted the essay to be "deeply nonacademic" and they wanted to know "what makes you the most excited" about the book while seeing you "address the text in a voice that feels authentic to you." I tried to look at it like coming up with a creative metaphor for a book you really like. I also tried to choose a book that feels significant but still speaks to my particular reading niche: a short, somewhat surreal book published in translation that had won a major prize in its country of origin. I write literary fiction, and it felt like the book I chose for my response piece was a bit different than the pieces I submitted.
They did mention that the sample and the response essay were the most important components of the submission, so it's good that you are thinking about it!

For the other troll victims on this board thinking about Columbia, I kind of think the "chosen one" stuff they espouse is B.S. By and large Columbia is very stingy with funding, so even the "top candidates" are getting what amounts to small discounts. Columbia is an academic brand, and if it weren't perceived to be worth the money they wouldn't get away with charging so much. If you live in Ohio and work at Starbucks it looks like a ton of money. If you live in New York (or another major urban center) and work in media, it doesn't seem quite as crazy. At the end of the day, your employer, agent or publisher won't care if your program was funded or not. It's about the work you do and who you know. It's ironic to see people sit around on these internet boards all day trying to tear down other posters for considering Columbia and preying on insecurities about money, talent etc. Just seems like the ultimate sour grapes. I mean it in the nicest possible way when I say: Get a life!

Hi! I'm on NYU's fiction waitlist and I didn't get an email about any other programs. Are you also on the waitlist for fiction?

    Hi ya'll!
I saw some questions about BU. I got accepted and was notified via phone call last Friday. I am not sure what's up with fiction, but I was told I should know who else is in the poetry program by the end of this week. I will be attending BU and I'm turning down my offer to Sarah Lawrence and withdrawing my name from the NYU waitlist. Good luck to everyone!

    Egad!
I had New Awlins on the mind today, actually.  Will you be accepting?  If so, make sure you take a moment to sit down at Cafe du Monde if you haven't already in life.  That sweet smell of coffee and beignet is actually not all that dissimilar from the smell of the train station in my hometown of Camagüey, Cuba, give or take some tar and oil.  ;)
Such a cause for joy!!  Happy to see good vibes flow back...

Just received an email from Columbia to check the portal. Just based on that I knew I had been rejected. I also applied to GMU as part of the second pool of applicants (still considered for funding). Haven't heard back yet. Waitlisted at LSU (removed myself from waitlist), and rejected from Iowa and Northwestern. But I've already accepted an offer to attend JHU's MA in Writing program part-time because I just started a new job, which is writing intensive, and the employer will cover the full tuition cost for part-time graduate study!
This was my first application cycle, and even though JHU had initially been a back-up, I'm incredibly grateful things fell into place the way they did. I also learned a lot about what it looks like to prioritize writing in my everyday routine. I think my biggest takeaway from this cycle is that writing is what makes a writer, not a grant, fellowship, or an acceptance to a program. Even if I had been accepted to my top program, if I didn't discipline myself to continue writing (and revising and editing), I'd just be an alum of a great program.
I'm also super grateful for all the info and support from this forum, and for all the resources that were shared in Draft! Planning to take a workshop this summer from a non-university organization.
Best of luck to you all in the future! And to take a line from some friendly rejection emails: I look forward to reading your work in the future (even if I'll never know if it was written by one of you ?)!

I was accepted in to Columbia for fiction last Saturday. I also posted to the draft. This is my only acceptance this season--unless I get in at UBoston, which I'm doubting. I was offered a scholarship of 20k, but I believe that is my only funding offer. I'll likely have to reject and go for my PhD offer, but still stoked to get in somewhere this round

I emailed them about 5 days ago, so they will probably get back to you after they respond to the people who emailed them earlier, but yes I meant to quote M-Lin's post about the response
