This is a fun thread! I generally carry a purse and then throw whatever I need for that day into one of my many many tote bags. It ends up looking something like this: Purse: - wallet - reusable grocery bag in case I run an errand on my way home - lip gloss, lotion, etc - sunglasses (I wear them even in London...which will forever mark me as an American) - mini Moleskine for artist talks and lecture notes - Pencil case - iphone Tote: - Atoma notebook (I'll need to figure out where to get them back in the states... they're my go-to notetaking system now) - kindle - thermos of coffee - Usually my MacBook... but I just got a new MacBook Air! I second everyone's recommendations. The student discount made it fairly affordable. I've noticed my MacBook has started to go on the decline (mostly because I carry it EVERYWHERE) so I'm hoping a $900 investment now will save me from spending another $2500 for a couple more years. I'm mostly paperless, but I still take my class notes by hand.

hanging in the chat for a bit because I need a distraction. come one, come all!

To the person who got a phone call from their Harvard POI, congrats! I assume that can only be a good thing!

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school

Did you reply "Actually, there were >300?" I would have been so snarky and condescending right back. At least, with my family. Maybe not my SO's... -
Aw, shucks. Honestly not why I posted my profile, but it is nice to hear. I'm very jealous of your languages, though! BTW, will PM you re: Brazilian art.

This should probably be on the art history board... maybe one of the mods can move it? In any case, I'll bite. Most of this info is scattered around GC anyway, after a few seasons of posting here. SCHOOL: highly-ranked SLAC MAJOR/MINORS: Art History/History double major GPA (Overall/Major): 3.6/3.69, departmental honors in Art History GRAD SCHOOL: Courtauld GRE: (old) 740V/720Q/4.0A TOEFL/IELTS (If applicable): n/a DIVERSITY (minority, if applicable): queer, Latina AREAS OF INTEREST: postwar avant-gardes, particularly Central/Eastern Europe; memory; gender HONORS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Fulbright (full) PRESENTATIONS: several international conferences, some graduate level, some not PUBLICATIONS: in a well-regarded (though mostly regional) journal of art criticism PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: an embarrassing number of museum internships (both paid and non-paid, one major NYC institution, two international) LANGUAGE(S) READ: Polish SCHOOLS (APPLIED TO): see signature

I prefer cashmere argyle socks. Does that count as a color?

I think I've shared this story on GC before, but I once (as an Undergrad) told BU why I wanted to attend a SLAC. I later sent them the right essay and was admitted anyway I think they know we're all applying lots of places, and mistakes happen.

@coffeeforever: love your name! How are you liking this snow we're having?? @annieca: congrats!! for some reason I dragged out my last application, waiting until right before the deadline to hit submit (although it was mostly done). It was like the whole process was hard to let go of. Smart, I guess, because I wasn't frantically checking then like I am now...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard anyone affiliated with Berkeley call it Berk. UCB, UC Berkeley, Cal, but not Berk. I thought I'd mention, just in case it makes a difference for you in an interview or something. Oddly, every time I read 'Berk' I think 'Berks,' like Big Berks, the women's studies conference, and I get confused. Apologies for the OT. Carry on!

in case people are around like they were last night, I found a place for us to chat: http://zippychat.com/room/xzlsh I'll be hanging out there while I do my reading!

This is more general, but I absolutely can't stand that you can't be logged into more than one Applyyourself application at a time. It would have been so much easier to fill in the more rote sections (ie, educational history) all at once, assembly-line style, than to do each one individually. But maybe that's just me!

You aren't the only one, don't worry! I'm getting a tiny bit of work done, but not much. Definitely not enough. Just keep checking my email...
-
I'm so glad to not be the only person in Europe around here. The silence of these boards in the morning is painful! I need some sort of distraction from waiting...
-
I'm sure this sounds like some sort of humblebrag, but be glad you haven't done one yet! You only get one shot, and this way you can use a Fulbright to do dissertation research later on. As much as I'm thankful for my experience (it totally reshaped my research focus) I know enough about grad school now to wish I'd waited until I was in a PhD program to do a Fulbright.

Same! It was weird seeing so many unfamiliar faces. If anyone has an idea for where we could host an art-history focused chat, let's do it! ETA: Thanks to whomever posted about Princeton. March 15?! That's like a jillion years away! I guess, hypothetically, good news would come sooner...

If it helps any, I'd kill for your bilingual ability! Languages are the bane of my existence right now. And your unique background might help you stand out, or be extra memorable. A lot of us have pretty similar backgrounds and I'm sure POI will start to forget who's who as they look through lots of apps.
-
Wait-- so one of your schools ASKS you to upload the letters yourself?? So bizarre!
-
I hope you're right! Just noticed a whole bunch of us here. I might pop into the chat for a bit if anyone wants to join! Anything to keep me from checking my email... (really should be doing reading, but oh well!)
-
Not the interviews themselves, but the potentiality of them/waiting to hear about them. I've had limited contact with my POIs, which makes me really nervous, actually...
-
For a while I was sort of kicking myself for not applying to NW, but now I'm glad I didn't! I'm sure soon enough I'll have one of my schools to be super anxious about, though...
-
I know for the program I'm in now, it's up to the discretion of the POI whether they interview or not-- and whether they interview everyone, or just people they'd like more information from. So maybe that's the case with NW? I went to an artist talk tonight and blissfully didn't think about my application for ~2 hrs!! Might need to pack my schedule full to keep this going...

Upped to help compensate. Deep breaths. Who's to say you AREN'T highly qualified enough to be in that 20%? You sound invested and enthusiastic, and probably have amazing reasons why you're a great fit for the program. You've got this!
