    Hey everyone, just hopping on here real quick as someone who has gone through this process twice already.. if you are considering UMass Amherst (fully funded with TA stipend and free health insurance) do your research and reach out to as many current students and faculty as possible. I began last year with a cohort of 7, and half of us left before the year was over to transfer elsewhere. It seems like a good fit for someone who is fine with a place that feels like a high school art program at a private school (nice facilities but boring/strict faculty). If you're looking for a cutting edge environment, it's not going to be there.

    This happened to me last year.. I started at UMass Amherst because the full ride/stipend/insurance was too good to pass up. When I got there I realized that the program was in complete shambles, so I left after 3 weeks. They didn't really give me a hard time or guilt me about funding. I had a feeling that this may happen, so I immediately emailed the school that was my 1st choice originally seeing if I could transfer ASAP. It turned out that they did not accept spring semester transfers, and that I had to reapply with everyone else this year. Luckily they were very nice and understanding, so I will be starting at BU Painting in the fall. Some schools will accept spring semester transfers, but not many. You are totally allowed to apply to other schools as a full-time student! I don't know if I would advise asking current faculty for recommendations since it might cause some tension, but nothing says you can't change your mind.

    I think it’s something that you have to consider before the applications process. Unfortunately it’s just something that will be reflected in the list of schools you apply to and there is no way around it. I would have loved to apply to a longer list of competitive schools, but I knew that even if I applied to RISD and Columbia etc. there would just be no chance in hell that I could afford that so I wanted to avoid the double disappointment. There are a lot of funded schools, and some good private schools that offer a bunch of aid, so it’s helpful to have a well rounded group of schools that will give you a range of financial situations. It’s heartbreaking to have been admitted to your dream school and not being able to take the plunge.. but it just seems to be a big consideration to make prior.

    If it makes a difference to you, I was in this exact situation last year (full ride+stipend+insurance vs. 80% scholarship) and I picked the full ride over my top choice because I am an extremely frugal person. I ended up leaving almost immediately because it was clear that I would not thrive at that school for a number of reasons. It actually ended up being more expensive to have such a bumpy ride of a gap year, than it would have to just suck up the tuition cost and go to my top choice. I can’t say that the same would happen to you, but really consider what you want out of your education and consider how you’ll get there. 70% is a great scholarship if you can make it work!

    This being said, if you know which school you are ultimately going to attend and are ready to accept.. don’t wait until April! The earlier that schools can lock in their first round of acceptances, the faster they can accept people on the waitlist.

    A solid amount of people definitely get accepted off of the waitlist! If one person is accepted to 5 schools, they can still only pick one and end up leaving an open slot at four schools. Multiply that by everyone who has been accepted to multiple programs!

    I think I'm the only one on here applying to boston university (painting and sculpture) so far on the forum, but to anyone else just reading our posts.. the sculpture department said they are meeting this Wednesday to discuss finalists-- and last year both painting and sculpture decisions came out on 3/8.

    Did anyone else interview with Boston University Painting? I'm curious if Josephine was conducting all of the interviews, or if anyone met with Lucy Kim instead. I think my interview went as well as it could have considering I am a very multidisciplinary painting/sculpture/print/photo hybrid and Josephine is a very "capital P" Painter. I am curious if anyone got to talk with Lucy, since she has a much broader approach to painting that is more intertwined with sculpture and similar to me. She made a point at the open house to stress that their program accepts all kinds of points of view on painting, but my interview with Josephine was very much from a capital P perspective of painting with niche references that was veryyyyyyy far from where my head is at.

    Don't be afraid to politely counter an offer! If you get a better offer from your second or third choice, you can always craft a thoughtful email saying that you really want to attend School A, but School B offered you X amount more and that even though School A is your top choice, you are thoroughly assessing your options. Most schools have wiggle room for candidates that they really want and may be able to add a bit more money to your package. Last year I was able to get a 50% scholarship up to 80% just by sending an email. The worst they can say is no! They may ask for proof of your offer, so don't exaggerate or make anything up, just be honest and open to their response

    I interviewed with Tyler sculpture last year and it was pretty intense. Be prepared to be grilled about the conceptual reasons for pretty every component of your practice from material choice to visual content. I ran long with my presentation so have a clock

    I don't think that it's a problem to have different mediums and a variety of different work as long as it still looks like it was done by the same hand. I think that it is good to show that you are constantly thinking and expanding and showing, but they might be hesitant to pick someone who is truly all over the place. I think that if you can group the work in a way that shows a trajectory or overall narrative in the way that the work shifts between materials then that would be the best way for the review panel to understand how you got from point A to point B.
