  1. Apparently Syracuse acceptances and waitlist notifications have gone out - 6 acceptances, 6 waitlists. Good luck to everyone who applied there! EDIT: Information is from a post in Draft a few minutes ago EDIT 2: These were for poetry.
  2. I'm so sorry you're feeling down. And no need to apologize for ranting, that's part of what this forum is for! Writing is a field full of rejection, many have told me that – but it doesn't take all of the pain away, it still stings. I'm sorry you've experienced rejection with other fields you loved - my teenage years were full of that, and it pushed me into a field I hated and ended up leaving (for writing, of all things)! I wouldn't abandon hope just yet, but of course it's always good to have a backup plan. If you know poetry is where your heart and soul reside, it could be well worth it to look into workshops and fellowships! That way, you still have something to be excited for even if the worst happens.
  3. I'm starting to think I've read my writing sample more after submitting than before. xD
  4. I hate the "not knowing," but I feel I'll end up preferring it if I get a rejection next! Like many writers, I've a terrible tendency towards overthinking absolutely everything. I've got a spreadsheet of the past notification dates for all the universities I applied to, but with these super-early notifications from big schools, it's hard to say they'll even be accurate! I told myself I wouldn't start freaking out until the week after next, but it seems I may have been presumptuous!
  5. From last year's results, it seems acceptances and waitlists went out around the same time (10 February), and rejections went out a little over a week later: https://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/?per_page=20&q=creative+writing+mfa+washington+university+st.+louis&institution=&program=&degree=&page=2 It's hard to say anything for certain, though, and I didn't apply there nor am I associated with the school in any way, so please don't take my word for absolute! It does feel early. I am feeling..emotions.
  6. Two results for WUSTL up in Draft! I didn't apply there, but I know many here did. Apparently the acceptance and waitlist in the group both came via email. EDIT: Two fiction acceptances, a poetry acceptance, a CNF acceptance, a CNF waitlist, and a poetry waitlist are what has been posted!
  7. Terrified, lol. I keep oscillating between getting my hopes up ridiculously high and then convincing myself I'll get rejected from all of my top choices. I'm a terribly impatient person (a character flaw, I know), so the waiting is the hardest part.
  8. I think an applicant's attitude is a huge factor in their decision-making. I attended a virtual open house yesterday for a university I won't name, and one of the attendees told the faculty that she disliked reading and also never felt the need to edit her work because she always got As and Bs on the first or second draft. I could immediately see the shock on their faces. She was using a guest account and they asked her for her name again..I can't see her getting in @___@;;
  9. Actually, I'm inclined to say you are right about this! One of the first questions I asked here on GradCafe was regarding whether adcoms read writing samples first, and if they decide to proceed with the rest of your application, they will look at your other materials. So, this may indeed be a glimmer of hope!
  10. Indeed so - if that deadline begins to approach and I haven't heard back from all of the programs to which I applied, I'm definitely going to ask for some kind of extension.
  11. Thank you so much! It's a real relief that an acceptance has come so early. Honestly, I'm shocked because the deadline was the 15th, and they accepted me on the 18th, after a weekend. They must've read it instantly and just..! Whew! That being said, it's not my first choice. It's the only school I applied to that isn't in North America, and I would prefer to stay on this continent, hah. So yes, I'm holding out for other decisions. Unfortunately, they've set the deadline for my response to their offer as March 15th, which is pretty early..let's hope I hear back from my top choices before then!
  12. Checked my email because I couldn't sleep – in for Fiction/Prose at St Andrews. In total shock. How am I supposed to sleep now!? 1a/0w/0r/12p
  13. Hah, I live in California. I love it desperately.
  14. In Draft, it's been mentioned a few times that the main purpose of the academic sample is for the committee to see that you're capable of critical thinking and analysis. A few people have said it's not wildly important. However, since the schools are asking for it, I would think it should be at least decent, but I think it's safe to assume it's not as important as the creative sample.
  15. Goodness! I still have two February 1st deadlines that I've not yet submitted, and there are already acceptances going out..! (For other programs, of course, but still. Early start to notification season! Though it gives me something to take my mind off of my own waiting..)
  16. Hah, I totally understand. With most of my applications in, the waiting game has officially begun. I've already checked last year's notification dates for every school I applied to, and none of them notified before mid-February, yet here I am, stressing myself out. Oh well!
  17. My guess is that was for the low-residency program, which has two intakes yearly.
  18. Thanks so much! I'm super open to suggestions! Especially to good bookstores. I've already walked into every one I've seen, including Twice Sold Tales, which was probably my favorite seeing as they had six cats. I also feel the same about the virus - neither of us are particularly at risk but we want to ensure the safety of those around us!
  19. I'm in Seattle this week and Vancouver next. Checking out the universities, though it's unlikely I'll get into either with their horrifying acceptance rates. I've been to Seattle once before and absolutely adore it; I've never been to Vancouver and am very excited to see it. Traveling right now in light of COVID has been challenging, but my partner will be coming with me wherever I go, and he's never been to either of the two cities, so we wanted to see if he liked them enough to see himself living there. This time was our only opportunity to go before decisions are released, so alas, here we are, double-masking everywhere and washing our hands so frequently they've gone raw. Oh well! (Edit: we are also both fully vaccinated and boosted!)
  20. Not all universities ask for FAFSA, though - I've only submitted FAFSA to those who have directly requested it. Is this not the best course of action?
  21. Hah, this is the story of my life! I'm diving headfirst into so many hobbies right now. It's a fantastic way to keep busy, especially since I am so bad at waiting. But damn do those little costs add up!
  22. Out of curiosity - which schools are considered to be on the less competitive / less cutthroat side?
  23. Sigh, yes! I still need to heavily edit my critical sample and write a 1,000-word literary criticism. Thankfully most of my deadlines aren't until early-mid January but that's still rapidly approaching..
  24. Anyone know how the "process of elimination" works at most schools? I read in Draft that one university (name wasn't mentioned) has five readers, each are given the same number of writing samples to review, they all selected their top 10 from that pool, and they narrowed it down from there. That meant some people were getting rejected without any other part of their application (SOP, any other written materials) even being reviewed. Is this common? I know people say the sample is the most important part, which of course it is. But I wanted to know if this is the general practice.
