International Fulbrighters Fall2011

I would have to agree with Kathiza. During my interview at the US embassy, they asked me why Harvard, and why No.35 on the world ranking University I said, yes, Harvard has great staff, great opportunities for research, lot of funding potential, but also, No.35 may be a great fit. Why? Because in my country I have none. There is not one university that can teach me the stuff I could get to learn in the USA. And I said, any University would be a bonus, in some of them - maybe they will care more for me, as Kathiza mentioned, and on Harvard, maybe my advisor will be rather busy to meet me more frequent that usual. I don't know, I believe that it is the Universities, as Kathiza said that "fight" for you, and IIE for the best bargain. So, if Harvard didn't fight for me, then why not accepting UMass for example if they would be proud and consider it a success of having a student from the Balkans under their roof? I said, I would accept any University because my chances for research here are equal to zero. And getting a Fulbright and that kind of experience would be the best thing that could happen for me right now. It is just the anticipation that makes me go little over the edge and makes me nervous -

I got over 100 points, but to be honest, I have no official e-mail or something stating, yes, you got it, we just need to find you a school and/or funding. As far as my situation goes, I am in the same position as the first day I sent out my application. We have no idea till the last offer comes...or does not come. -

Well, I thought that no-one here got an actual offer?! We are still waiting on funding, including me, but I have no idea which school accepted/rejected me...I don't know to which schools IIE has applied on my behalf. What was your TOEFL score? And yours, Anette, too? Just curious does it play any role... -

When is your deadline to decide? Did they tell you anything on medical clearance? UMass is a great place to be! You might be surprised of the program. Did you have any word to say which school would be your top-choice? Or IIE and your local Fulbright coordinator chose for you? I am not acquainted with the whole Fulbright process in Russia... -

That is some great news Anette! I think that you are the first one that got an actual offer on the forum. All of the others didn't get and official e-mail...at least I think not. -

Fulbright and paid internship

It seems so! I am just not sure if we can have a paid internship whilst being Fulbrighters? -

Well, as I wrote somewhere, it was the same for me...still is, actually. They are bargaining. I know I have to be patient, but when I see all of those " I got accepted".."I got this kinda envelope..."...A little bit of drool must have showed while reading other people's acceptances:( -

I have to say, I am checking this site like zillion times a day, and it helps when you people share a slight bit of what is going on...that gives me the strength to wait...and not going crazy. And yeah, I hope that this will all end soon so that I know what is my next move -
Frankly, I believe that it can just add up to deciding positively. Many of the people posting here I already admire and feel like decent grads. Then, yeah, why not share a flat? In the end, you don't have to befriend each other for life, the point is to get a decent person to room-in with you. If you become friends - better deal. If not, at least you are on the safe side of getting a same mindset person as a rommie -we all post here because we are aware of our future as grads and professionals.

Oh man, neuropsychosocial.... As a chem engineer with focus on neurochemistry, I could definitely room with you:)

I really considered this option. I read that couple of people even got accepted to the faculties I applied, so I seriously thought of suggesting them to move-in together...I know that it might sound crazy, but as you said, the options are way less likely to have a scammer I don't know, would that make me like a stalker-crazy-person, if I suggested that? To me, it sounds reasonable.

One question, I was also concerned with this issue, but then an idea came to my mind: would you roommate with someone from thegradcafe forum? Do people consider this option?

I wish they bargained faster Just...you guys all got "acceptance". I don't have ANY news at all. I know that I am in that short list of candidates that have their papers sent to IIE, but not a word on "yes, you basically got the Fulbright, and now we'll see who wants you". Nothing. Nada. Zero. Is that weird? How did you get your acceptances, like, a letter, or e-mail, or...? Please, fill me in, since I am getting lonely in this situation -

Is it strange that I have not heard any official rejects/acceptance? I just got that email I posted couple of posts behind. When do non-US get the "acceptance" or "rejection" letters? -
Fulbright and paid internship
matilda replied to matilda's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I am working on a position in Europe that I would like to know more about. So, I see that even my company offers internships in the USA, which I would love to get. It will give me the chance to learn stuff that I don't get to learn in Europe. I am just not sure if internships can be negotiated, meaning, if they offer 40h/week, and you want only 20h/week? And is it common to give an internship to lets say, a professional? Since I have been on my position for 5 years now. -

What is the difference between 20h/week and 40h/week? -

Well, I got this: part-time employment will not interfere with your academic performance nor delay degree completion. But, is internship considered as an employment?
