  1. Pleiades, congratulations! Ussama Makdisi is an excellent scholar! Having him as a supervisor would be fantastic! Wow, there are so many Middle Eastern historians on this forum - this is awesome.
  2. Is it even legal for them to ask you where else you applied? Anyway, I don't think you should worry. If you are nominated for two university-wide fellowships, you are one of the top candidates in the department. They probably wait for the results of the university competition, then distribute department financial aid. I know nothing about your field but I would think that top candidates are never left out worse off than other students.

  12. I still haven't heard from Harvard. For my interdisciplinary programme (History is one part of it), decisions can be made as late as early to mid-March if one is to trust results from previous years.

  21. Sorry, I may be mistaken but ... are you applying for Masters? If you are, then it is probably possible to get into a decent Masters if your record is otherwise perfect and you write an excellent statement of purpose that shows that you know what you want to do. If you think of a Ph.D., you most probably would need to retake GRE. Sorry if it doesn't help.

  25. I wouldn't say a 'stronger' candidate. I am sure that most people who apply are actually strong candidates. Perhaps, rather the candidate especially fit for that programme, that faculty and that year (sometimes, adcoms look for different things in different years). It is also very difficult to speculate about other schools based on results from this one. There must be an academic 'fit' to get into every school. No matter how great GRE, GPA and wring sample are, nothing is guaranteed without that 'fit' (plus the politics at the department). You've probably seen people here on GradCafe who reported acceptances at Ivies and rejections at what were considered their 'safety' schools.
