  2. This is an excellent if somewhat disheartening thread. Applied: 9 programmes Overall: $1000 Application fees: $630 (would be $780 but got special deals on early applications) GRE: $285 (exam + 4 additional schools) Postage fees: $45 Transcripts: $40 I also had to book flights to take my GRE exam. If I get in anywhere with full funding, it will be worth it!
  3. Oh, and if you seek advice on how to improve your English (I doubt you need it: your initial post suggested a near-native ability) - as Langoustine suggested, watch US TV shows. It is a great way to bridge the cultural and linguistic gap indeed.
  4. I am in the same field as you. Getting into NYU for Middle Eastern History is a massive accomplishment. Congratulations! You should be very proud of yourself for this - do not fear moving to the States and definitely do not doubt things of little significance such as the accent in English. In our field, there are many scholars from continental Europe and the Middle East, and everyone has some sort of accent! It is one of the defining features of our field, in fact. If you want to make a career in Near Eastern Studies, no one - no professor and no student - will care whether you have an accent because almost every non-native speaker does. Your scholarship will come under scrutiny, not anything else.
  5. I am not sure about other subjects, but in my subfield of History, I do not think there are any quotas for international students. When most History departments across the country accept 1-2 students in that subfield, and specialised departments in regional studies admit 4-5 students a year, I do not think adcoms care about race or nationality. Also, since the language requirement is hugely important in my field, international students often have a strong advantage and hence represent a much higher proportion of student body (often about 50%) then average in other disciplines.

  7. It would be reported on GradCafe Results. I am waiting for Columbia as well. I think that Columbia notifies in March... ??????

  11. Congratulations to both admits! Great programmes at great universities!
  12. My friend described GradCafe today as Applicants Anonymous - apparently, I was refreshing the Results board and my e-mail every 5 minutes without even noticing I was doing it.
  13. Good Luck

  15. Three rejections from Berkeley were reported on GradCafe. No news on Princeton there yet. Do you also think that invitations for Princeton interviews should be sent ...... any moment now?
  16. Apparently, Berkeley reported admissions to Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies.

  18. Going travelling for a while, trying to bury my rejection sorrow in wandering in distant lands and taking thousands of artsy pictures; then moving to Belgium or the Netherlands (I am from Europe) and trying not to starve to death. I am actually being totally serious.
  19. It probably depends on the university you are applying to. Different universities use different online application systems and adopted different methods of notifying applicants. For example, none of my the schools I applied to have an online system where I could log on to and check the status of my application - so I have to rely on my e-mail.

  21. I have a week to come up with a somewhat detailed research proposal for my Master's thesis. Currently, I don't have a topic. No panic though - it will come.
  22. I don't know for sure but I don't think you need to worry about contacting schools. If they accept you, it is hardly because of the summer volunteer trip, which you were scheduled to do. Acceptance is likely to be based on what you have already accomplished! I hope all goes well!
  23. I think this is standard practice to ask referees again and again. Many people use the same referees applying for Master's and then for a Ph.D. So there shouldn't be any difference if you are re-applying. I hope your referees are easy-going.

  25. Hi! Did you get into D.Phil. programmes in Oxford and Cambridge or Master's?
