Right there with you. My husband took me for a weekend trip he planned back in November to get hyped up about moving to one of these places and I had to tell him they take 5… out of 1000. Hasn’t stopped the fantasizing.

Brown, Montana, UCI (but maybe a soft R based on draft), JHU if that still counts as weird secret backup WL, UVic BC which I was shortlisted for an am assuming is sitting with another candidate at the moment

There are at least two people in the draft spreadsheet in at Syracuse AND a bunch of other schools for fiction so I think it’s totally reasonable to maintain hope for some movement. This time last year (as I sit here with my basket of Rs and Ps), I was listening to Barbra Streisand’s memoir and she was talking about losing a big break audition to someone else early on and just thinking, “Well, it’s her turn now. I’m excited for her.” And being at peace with it not being her turn yet. ALSO am on day two of being absolutely bedridden with something that I thought was norovirus but now think could be the flu or something else and am realizing Brown/etc could have a person suffering from something similar (or worse! An administrator at my kids’ school who has a child in my son’s class lost their husband on Sunday) and am trying to just stay calm (and asleep because disease) because a lot could be going on. It’s probably someone else’s turn right now.

Glad they took that extra week to get the letter right. At least we’re out of our misery for that one. Ready for the rest 🙇🏼‍♀️

It’s honestly hard to dissect and say “well this character evolution combined with this precise language approach generates this effect which is probably appealing” or anything like that. I would equate it to reading the beginning of Luster by Raven Leilani and perking up and thinking “wow this is so different and not something I have thought about before!” Not that it’s the same subject matter, but I would say that is closer to my interpretation of an experience of reading these stories. Again, it’s not particularly helpful to have specifics because we’re talking about art and how that art is connecting with readers so what works for one writer isn’t going to work for another. I listened to a George Saunders interview where he talked about mimicking Hemingway in his early writerly days and realizing he really wasn’t Hemingway. And also think about what a bummer it would be if he hadn’t started doing his own weird thing that we all now know and love. I think we all need to just figure out what the thing is that works for our writing and although there’s much to be admired in other people’s writing too, in this instance it isn’t going to generate a fix that will get us in next time.

I feel like there was a lot of action during Feb break so spring break shouldn’t slow them down? I haven’t heard a peep since my Michigan rejection on 2/21…howwwwww

This group has been so quiet this year without you!! Thank you for the update. I was over here about to chill out and realized last year on Sunday was when UVA rejected me so… looking forward to a chill rest of my weekend. Hopefully someone in this group gets some good news from Irvine soon
