Same. Literally zero news. Still waiting on JHU
-
I think the fellowship waitlists move quite a bit especially for people admitted off the bat and not off the waitlist. Worth holding out hope and expressing interest/needing funding
-
It’s also their second round - there IS hope for all of us if we can get that much better
-
FWIW they’re in my workshop group and are so amazing and I could see how their voice would stand out in a pile of 1000 apps. It’s actually been really helpful to know their work and watch this shake out because I’m like “yep that’s so unique and not something anyone else could write” so I get why seeing other people’s successful apps wouldn’t be THAT helpful to guide what we do going forward
-
I took Jess Silfa’s reapplicant class through draft that they do in the fall and it was so helpful for working through things like this. They had a checklist of things you should ideally shoot for in what you’re submitting that ad coms typically like to see, etc and they also will read your samples and help you choose what to include. WILDLY helpful. People do get in using novel excerpts but you might need to pick part of your novel that can truly stand alone especially in a lower page count setting for some of these is my understanding. Personally, I would keep working on the novel since it’s what you’re excited about. I don’t think you need to know what you’re working on to submit until a few months from now so just keep generating work and getting better and you can decide over the summer if you’re feeling inspired to write something new and short or if you want to polish a chunk of your novel.

Huge congrats!! Are we allowed to ask which program you’re leaving? Just as people who are on the verge of potentially attending these it would be helpful to have a datapoint.
-
Yeah I’m also on round 2 and am wondering if I’m just delusional / would ever actually get there
-
Same

Because of how expensive NYC is, I feel like if you get an acceptance not off the waitlist, there’s still a chance of moving up the funding ladder. If you get in off the waitlist (which happens! My only acceptance last year!) no chance for funding
-
Probably not. Last year they emailed a ton of people who weren’t getting funding initially to tell them they were in via batch email
-
Yeah, I weirdly am like “no news means they haven’t gotten to the rest of their calls yet!” slash I don’t know if they are deliberating in batches or what?
-
I’m pretty sure NYU called a few people with funding packages last year and then sent a mass email to everyone else admitted
-
Samesies
-
If you’re on draft, I think Jess posted a good pdf you can only see on a desktop of what to ask. GL!!

I’m assuming soft R from JHU and Iowa, waiting on Montana, NYU, UCI, Brown, UVA, UVic BC, Stegner (lol) all for fiction
-
I think JHU is waiting for Iowa etc results to roll out to have a more firm idea if they need to elongate their waitlist before they reject the rest of us
-
What time zone are you in out of curiosity? I wonder if that’s part of the calculation
-
Fwiw last year they sent some “your app is still under consideration” emails to the waitlist and snail mail rejected everyone else (post marked early March maybe the 3rd). I think everyone has until 4/15 to decide for all these fully funded programs
-
Yeah looks like it

This process is so excruciating. This is my second year applying and I’m still waiting on a handful of schools but have a mixed bag of soft and hard rejections so far and am just feeling so exhausted and anxious and beaten down. Up until this point, I thought this year would be easier because I’ve already been through it but instead it’s like the now years-long waiting period is compounding on itself. And I keep thinking about people like Alejandro Puyana who got in after four tries but also had his admission story featured in The Best American Short Stories that year and it makes an actual acceptance somewhere I want to go feel that much more insurmountable. But also the way the news dribbles out is incredibly anxiety inducing. It’s not like an admission guarantees anything re: future work beyond time and more resources but it feels like the end-all be-all when it’s so top of mind for such a sustained period of time. Ok rant over
-
I got into NYU off the waitlist last year and decided to reapply this year (because not full funding, NYC is expensive, etc). So far I’m sitting on a handful of rejections but I will say the second round of apps was a lot easier. Obviously no guarantees but they shouldn’t go to a program they aren’t excited about imo
-
I know. I audibly gasped.
-
Same here
-
Yes also asked someone there about this and they said they’re still deciding on fiction.
-
Yup
