  1. Just got an email from a PhD student at Temple saying congrats on acceptance. 1st acceptance! Whew! Said to expect an official notification in the mail. Happy to have finally heard something from someone. Takes some pressure off, but of all the schools I applied, I felt this was my best chance of acceptance so this is more of a relief than excitement of getting in where not expected, but I will take it for sure. No word on funding yet, so I will keep my fingers crossed on that one because during interview they said they expect to only have limited funding opportunities. This may be a great excuse to visit philly soon and grab a cheese steak
  2. That's interesting about the Fulbright not allowing individual essays. I'm no expert and could only speak from my experiences, but I think you are going about it the right way. I would read up on the professors, choose a few, research their backgrounds and then write arguments highlighting your research background and interests and how they closely match the professors areas. I did this as part of my SOP for each program that I applied, but due to length limited it to only 1 prof for most schools. I think the terms Letter of Intent and Statement of Purpose are used by different schools but basically mean the same thing. I would focus on answering any question(s) they asked, make sure it is well written (dont rush too much), and also focus on why you would be a good match for not only the profs, but also the program. Also, you mentioned above your "thesis." If this is for a Masters program, you will write a "thesis" but for a PhD, you will write a "dissertation." Maybe someone else has some insight too?
  3. To the person who posted in the results section that their app wasnt reviewed yet and Miami wants another essay, can u provide more details? I sent an email request asking when decisions would be made and never received a response. Was this in response to an email you sent or just randomly arrived? Did they provide a decision timeframe? Why would they want a second essay, that sounds kinda weird, no? University Of MiamiCommunication, PhD (F11)Other via E-mail on 7 Feb 2011I7 Feb 2011My application wasn't even reviewed yet. They want me to write another essay.
  4. Lots of TV, finalizing Thesis, and reading The Grapes of Wrath. Feeling much less stress since I started reading this new book. Usually I read non-fiction, but I am getting tired of my brain always being on and a nice classic fiction novel almost transports you to another place so you can get your mind off reality. Especially Steinbeck b/c his work is so descriptive, you really can visualize everything.
  5. Congrats to the person who posted in the results section they got accepted to Temple MMC. Would you be willing to share your stats via PM?
  6. I think the snow is probably working to delay things, especially here in the northeast, but thats no reason for slow pace coming from the rest of the country. The Results page seems to be very active with everything but Comm area.
  7. I have 2 papers presented at University Symposiums, 2 papers at Regional Conferences, and 1 paper at a national conference. 2 accepted to a regional conference this spring (Found out after apps were submitted) and will have 1 or 2 more this spring at University Symposiums again. Defending Masters Thesis this Spring.
  8. Congrats to everyone. Looks like there was some good movement this week, certainly more than last week. Hopefully we will all start getting the answers the that one questions we all have...."did I get in?" I have a friend who is not on this board (cant believe they can stand not looking at it every 5 min like us). She got a reject from Georgia State, PhD in moving images. She got the news by logging in to site and checking status. Figured I would post for those of you waiting on that program. Here's to a great next week for us all getting some news and that news being what we want
  9. Hey CDRR congrats on the GSU accept! I am curious, do you know if you got early notice b/c you are there are a student already of if they are sending out all notifications now? I didnt apply, but have a friend who did and would like to be able to get her an update if you happen to know. Thanks!
  10. I heard from Miami back in December because they didnt have 1 of my documents. I had sent it, but dont know why they didnt have it, so I sent it again. The guy I spoke with wasnt the nicest which bothered me a bit. I have not heard anything from them since. I check online, but they arent updating their site. I have not heard anything from Penn State either. On the results page I saw someone else said they got an interview request. I think Penn State is a bit of a stretch for me b/c my work has been more qualitative so far and they seem more quantitative. Congrats on your contact, that can only be good news. Have you heard anything from Texas? Was it RTF you applied to there? I got an email from them a while back saying my app was complete, but thats all I've heard. I'm hoping to hear something from someone soon. I finished all my apps pretty early and had everything submitted by Oct 15th, so I've been waiting over 3 months already! I expect those w/ 12/1 deadlines should start to announce something soon, or so I hope.
  11. XOwlfan....congrats on the acceptance!
  12. I just got a call from Temple. Basically they said they don't consider an applicant without having made contact via phone w/ them. Not sure if this is a good sign or they are just contacting everyone who applies. The purpose was basically: 1. Are you still interested in attending our school? 2. Do you have any updates to provide us with since the time of your application? 3. Would you accept an offer without funding? (Apparently funding will be in short supply due to state budget cuts) 4. Do you have any questions for us? Anyone heard anything from any other schools? Interview requests? Emails? Calls? Etc.... Thought it would be nice to keep each other updated (after all we are all in the same boat here)
  13. I had submitted my materials pretty early. I contacted the grad coordinator early on w/ some questions and she was very nice and helpful. I followed up w/ an email after I had everything submitted. That took her a few days to respond, but she did respond, so I am sure you will hear something back. End of January at the latest would be awesome. I am really not expecting to hear from anyone until March but hearing sooner would be nice and Oregon is one of my top choices so I am really anxious about this one in particular. Keeping my fingers crossed for acceptance and a GTF position, is that asking too much Also, if you dont mind me asking, I noticed in another post you stated a program flew you out for a visit/interview/recruitment trip. Do you mind me asking what school? If you dont want to post it here, maybe we could talk on email or PM.
  14. I am curious what everyones expectations are for timeframe of responses. I am not really expecting to hear anything until March sometime. Would you agree or do you think some schools will be making decisions earlier than that? Are there specific schools that historically make decisions earlier or later than others?
  15. Dont let the criticism bother you. You never know what motives are behind peoples feedback ... also maybe she followed a guy in a relationship once that bit her in the ass so she is letting her past reflect on her attitude towards you. Sounds like she has a bad attitude in general and I wouldn't want her writing my letters. Who does she think she is to decide how a letter should be sent. I would stay away from this lady. Also, early October is the perfect time to ask. With apps due in many places as early as 12/1, this is 60 days notice which is perfect timing for them to gather info, write and submit without being rushed. I know its hard to let it roll off your back, but thats what you have to do.
  16. Hi! Interested to see where everyone is applying, so I will share my list too! All applications have been submitted, so now just tracking receipt of transcripts, test scores, etc.. For Fall 2011. Interested in Media, Culture, TV, Gender Studies... Brown U of Mass U of Oregon U of Texas @ Austin U of Georgia U of Miami Temple Penn State
