no cats here. but my pup, georgie, loves me unconditionally AND thinks i'm pretty damn smart. i can tell by the mournful look in his eyes when he looks at me (his little way of saying 'ma, i loved your last article. all those schools are crazy for not talking you.') too bad georgie doesn't currently sit on any adcoms.

sorry to hear that... yeah I'll just keep waiting then, I guess! I got my first rejection in the mail yesterday.. I keep reminding myself about all of the problems in the world, and how in the grand scheme of things this doesn't matter.. it just kind of smarts right now.. -

I've noticed a few rejections from Duke English up on the results board this morning... I haven't gotten mine yet, but how do you access it? Does the email direct you to a random webpage with the decision? I've been checking the online application for a message or whatever, but it just says application submitted etc like it has for the last few months. Am I looking in the wrong place? -
I just say, 'my name isn't miss. my name has 4 letters. I take the time to learn all of your names so please use mine.'
-
I too am only a few years older than my students.. they call me prof. katanianQ, although some have called me ms. katanianQ in the past and I don't really care. It's when I'm called "Miss" that really pisses me off.. it's an issue of respect then. "MISS.... did we have reading to do?" "MISS.... did we do anything important today?" "MISS.... this is so boring." If I can learn 135 names, you can learn mine.

post here if one of your programs has started contacting...

At this point though, I almost want to hear SOMETHING, aNYTHING.. because all of this waiting with no clue is not fun. just tell me already! Should I become a milliner or open a flower shop or what? -
We have a few schools in common there, although I'm a regular old english person.. I can't seem to concentrate or get anything done except refresh the email and sulk over these message boards.. My guess is with the shitty economy, programs are notifying smaller batches at a time and waiting for concrete acceptances/rejections before making more offers to people they potentially cant fund.. sound about right?

I know there are many academic couples who live apart but let me ask you this, seriously.. Isn't life just too freaking SHORT? I did a long distance relationship (and wrote about it on here somewhere) but ultimately, we knew it was just a temporary situation and eventually we would be together. Sure, careers are important but at the end of the day, there is more to life than having a fancy degree and writing a lot of obscure book nobody will ever read (in my field anyway). why the hell would you want to spend 20 years apart from the person you love, working as a cog in a machine? teaching mostly kids who, lets be honest here, don't want to be in your class or give a crap about your subject? I'm sure there will be a lot of animated discussion here and i am really looking forward to hearing what you guys think , out there in the void.

So.. a number of acceptances up there on the results page.. is there anyone out there who got in and wouldn't mind sharing some of info (ie. any publications, previous masters etc?) anyone else still waiting with the fingers crossed?

what are you reading...?

I've put Adrian Mole aside for the time being and am working my way through John Taylor Gatto's body of writing. He has seriously toe curling things to say about the American education system and what it was really designed to do. As someone who teaches college freshman and wonders what the hell these kids were doing for the last 12 years of their life, this book is really eye opening. I seriously recommend his stuff. And if you google him, he has one of his entire books available online for free, just to get the message out there. It's called The Underground History of American Education. check it out! -
any "what are you going to do now" fantasies?
katanianQ replied to katanianQ's topic in Waiting it Out
yeah well for drinks in manhattan these days, you may very well have to remortgage your house. plus... in bangkok, dont you mean 'ladyboy'? -
certainly! i play bass.. we can be like that band with stephen king and amy tan, only cooler.

my husband (then boyfriend) and I did loooong distance- NY to Ireland- for almost 2 years and lived to tell the tale. people will tell you youre crazy, but if you guys want it to work, it certainly can.

Well I've been listening to a lot of Obtuse Corrosion.. their latest album, monolithic steamshovel, has gotten a lot of critical acclaim and rightly so. I was loving Squirrelplastic Skydiver until i found out that they sold the rights to one of their songs for a honda commercial.. bastards...

i hear ya.. it's so much harder to be in the front of the room!

Just to add my 2 cents about the transition from a US undergrad institution to a UK grad program... In my experience, the students in the UK are much better prepared. This is even something my undergrad adviser in the US warned me about, but to be honest, I didn't fully grasp this until I arrived and was 'thrown in the pool' so to speak. since the undergrad system over there is structured so differently, they basically spend 3 (or 4, depending on the University) years studying their specific subject rigorously. No random course requirements or electives that have nothing to do with their major.. every moment is dedicated to digging in deep to their specific field. So, taking this into account (along with actually moving across the sea, entering a grad program, etc) you probably will be feeling overwhelmed and a little behind.. nothing a lot of extra hours in the library and hard work can't overcome.. just don't let it get you down. You will get there in the end. Hope this helps

The BEST TV show ever has to be Peep Show (for those not in the UK- its not what you think!) Two guys in their late twenties- one is a neurotic socially awkward wreck and the other is a 'musician' who spends all his time mooching and getting high. you hear all of their inner thoughts which are ..hilarious.. The two guys in it, mitchell and webb, met at cambridge and did the whole footlights thing there.
