  1. That's one thing i really want to know ! (i.e. instead of making a decision and regretting it for a year or so! :? )
  2. pro's : lots of faculty tryng to build their careers - so more opportunities to participate in research, usually con's : some of them may move on (greener pastures/denied tenure) while you're in the program
  3. Yup - one of those red-stipend places though maybe the housing index is a bit dated ...
  4. I thought grad school was about intrinsic motivation ...
  5. ... now that's too much to do :? Seriously though, getting myself bored and all geared up for grad school is probably a great idea
  6. bullseye , I wish I could have written that !
  7. to all you folks moving before school starts : what do early-movers do anyway ? :? Apart from the time needed to move stuff in, sign papers, arrange passes etc, i dont know what i'd do with all that time !
  8. Iowa is way ahead of the others based on your interests, imo. But if you want to consider more variables, you might want to see which of the departments has faculty in areas that are peripheral to your interests (SM comes to mind, for example!)
  9. erm ... Any idea how i can archive ebooks and PDF journals? :?
  10. umm - what if someone hasn't been assigned an advisor yet, and needs to meet with the real people behind the famous names - would that be a good reason to attend ?
  11. Imo academia is probably the only place where you're likely to be judged free of your political beliefs :? (outside the legl system that is, )
  12. even the squirrels love the place i'm going to ... reassuring, to say the least
  13. I heard NYU was good for urban. Maybe you could check out the usnews grad school rankings for soc subfields. Not the definitive word on programs, but a good placve to start anyway
  14. So this is what goes on in the "meet & greet" forum ! Never ventured here before oh, and me too
  15. you might also read up some research on theories of contention (Tilly & Tarrow) ... anyway it's the ideas that matter and not how you roll them out in a neat typology in your SOP
  16. Sorry to hear that - what are you planning to specalize in ?
  17. it also depends on what you want from the program - if you already have some research ideas and need the guidance to see them through- then maybe the senior advisor is the better bet (say, to get you on the right methodological track, without actually micromanaging you ). on the other hand, if you want to be closely mentored through the entire research process - then maybe the junior publication-machine prof would provide you with better opportunities to participate in his/her research agenda from what i have gathered from existing grad students, i guess there's no 'absolutely-right-type' of professor out there ... each has tradeoffs based on what you're looking for :?
  18. in that case you can ask for a written rescission of the accepted offer from school X, and then you'd be free to choose Y
  19. withdrew my application about two weeks ago - had heard nothing till then btw.
  20. check out UCSD's phd program (Rady school) - it's deadlines are pretty late. though, if i may add, a bad job market is a temporary thing, while a phd is a loong commitment :?
  21. NYU - if you're a city type; Michigan - well you probably should have a good reason to turn down NW for Michigan  and this ofcourse comes into play if you've already visited and still cant decide !
  22. sloan has already sent out 2 rounds of rejections, so if you're still to hear frmo them, you're probably waitlisted. There was a 17th feb acceptance though, on GC. Any other acceptances out there ? and yes the program is very niche - but no, it's not as org focused as it was a year or two ago - lots of people doing other fancy things there, on the micro/interaction side of economic sociology as well
  23. just one for me. Though the networking opportunity is good, taking time off from work for more than one visit would be a p.i.t.a. But if you're in school (ug/grad) it might not be such a hassle, so visit as many as you can
  24. i second that - i've heard this from a lot of grad students, and i personally feel that very few people can carry on for 4 years doing something they are not passionate about - and still emerge from this dissonance with their sanity !
