  1. from what i have heard, there's a hippie crowd but mostly from previous generations. As for specialization - that's precisely why i applied the weather is definitely cooold ... as for culture - maybe you can check out the link given btw, first cornell soc result posted on GC (its not me ) to the cornell poster: was there an interview ? (pm me plz if you dont want to post ...)
  2. cant remember seeing any cornell soc results yet on the results page though ... (note: hopeless optimist here :? )
  3. depends on the school i think (though i have no idea) ... perhaps you can ask the grad secy's - you're in at some great places, and i'm sure they wouldnt mind being bugged by folks who have actually been accepted
  4. first - a lot of schools are actually stuck in the same situation - it's great that uconn has actually clarified this second - you should probably reply enthusiastically if you're interested !
  5. i know it might be a case of 'little learning' being a dangerous thing, but it seems to me that Black has just repainted theories of emergence with blinkers on :?
  6. @cardnav - you might want to check the psych boards for folks interested in similar things, the business board seems pretty sleepy here :? @socialpsych - is it a west coast school ?
  7. on the marketability thing - in case you dont like academe - there's always the marketing / Consumer Behavior type jobs around. But they're mostly about pop-sociology gone wild Or you could join some no profits / lobbying groups, but you might find stimulating conversations hard to come by !
  8. I'm shocked to see SM being in such low demand - doesn't anybody care anymore ? or do the polsci folks do that stuff now ?
  9. thanks, that helps. I could have submitted a paper, but it is so completely unrelated that i instead chose to submt something more related, though data-light ! :| and congrats ewurgler & migdude - great admits already !
  10. nopes - no news at all. I guess they're waiting for the stimulus package to go through (a completely unsubstantiated guess at that ! )
  11. ok .. now you guys are freaking me out - i submitted the first draft of a case study I prepared for my firm's thought leadership magazine - will adcoms go rofl seeing what i submitted ? :? (warning: person with non-soc background here !)
  12. Anyone applying to Cornell Soc?
  13. i'll be facing a similar dilemma (IF i hear from anywhere) ... one particular school for example is ranked 3rd in my area of interest (USNews) but disappears from the overall depatment ranking (i.e. below 30) ! i'd still pick it over the better known departments though
  14. dunno about ucb - but the latter seems to have started looking at apps only last week ... this info ofcourse secondary - comes from forum surfing :?
  15. completely unrelated question: does cornell update its documents page ? i am one of those last minute types - and the gfa's email reticence is doing me no good at all
  16. if you cant find it - you can just email the grad assistant and ask - i did that for one school, and realized why they didnt want to put them on teh website !
  17. i had a few bad experiences with shooting to first name terms in the first email itself, while writing to grad students at prospective schools. That said - i also had a great many conversations with people who didnt mind this at all. my lesson from all of this: stop worrying - if they are offended by first name terms, they're not very friendly anyway! ofcourse with former professors, i always take the Prof. route
  18. theres a long way to go ... and i'm trying to "chill" - what i'm actually doing is taking up so much work that i have no time to think about it
  19. knowing about my "best fit" program (in terms of research interests) one day after the deadline - and frantically trying to to shift my application to that program (from a different program in the same univ.) ... oh wait that nightmare is still on
  20. ahh well, i've lurked for sometime now - and the poll was my first contribution I suppose a lot of applicants need the incredible scores to be even considered inspite of average gpa's. 4.0's shouldn't even bother looking at these numbers !
