  1. Hello Zouzax,

I see you're from Turkey. I'm from the Netherlands and I've been looking at grants for doing a PhD in the USA for myself, but I've also seen some grants from students coming to the Netherlands. Most of them are for students from either Europe or developing countries, though.

You could try the Huygens scholarship, but the application for fall 2011 was this February: http://www.nuffic.nl...rship-programme

I'm not sure about this one, but you could take a look: http://eacea.ec.euro..._courses_en.php

The most useful resource is this website: http://www.grantfind...ntent/index.asp It lets you search pretty much all grants that exist in the Netherlands, filtering based on some basic information (country of origin, etc.).

    I hope this helps!

In the Netherlands, getting a PhD is more like a job than like being a student. So there is less focus on the learning aspect than in the USA - but you do usually take a few classes. A major upside is that you're paid a salary. I'm not sure how that works for international students though (although I know that many of the people getting a PhD in the Netherlands are international). As far as I can tell, you get more responsibility as a Dutch PhD student and you are kind of treated as an American post-doc.

In my field, as far as I can tell, getting a foreign PhD is not academic suicide if you want to work in the Netherlands - however, that's not because an American PhD is seen as particularly prestigious, but because getting international experience and broadening your horizons is seen as a positive thing.

Good luck to both of you on your decisions!

Thank you so much for this, it was really helpful. I found two promising grants for Uva; i can't apply for them myself, I have to be nominated by the school after I submit my application. So I guess I should just bite the bullet & pay the application fee. Who knows, maybe Ill qualify for something.

Actually, I'm going to apply to a Research Master's there. I already have a Master's but I'm trying to increase my knowledge base and experience before applying to a Ph.d program again (I applied this year but was told by one prof that he thought I needed more experience. Ive taken this advice to heart). And I would love to experience a new country. Let's see what happens! Thanks again.

  2. i'm actually interested in the money part. I have been considering University of Amsterdam and a school in Paris for my Master's ... in terms of tuition, the school in Paris is no problem, just 400 euros a year, but since I'm not from a EU country (I'm already so sick of hearing that line) the tuition fee at Uva is over 10,000 euro .... are there no scholarships/ grants for foreign MA students? I was planning to apply for the program (deadline is April 1) but if there's no possibility of my getting funding I won't waste my time or money (100 euro app fee)...

  3. I'm totally learning the importance of word choice. I have a tendency to talk quickly without paying attention to the words I'm using, and its gotten me into trouble a few times. For example, last week I did a presentation on my thesis research & I said the word "Should" instead of "Could" (thus making it look like I was TELLING people what to do, not RECOMMENDING) and I swear one of my professors launched an attack on me like it was WWIII as she thought I was telling her how to do her job.

Another example is that I was describing the field I'm in to a friend & I meant to say one of the things we study is literature for the LGBT community ... but I said "we study gay literature" which my friend informed me was offensive. I had no idea .. and then I remembered I had said the exact same thing in an email to one of my POIs. Maybe thats why I was rejected from that school blink.gif.

But seriously, word choice is very, very important. Especially during things like interviews, presentations, and emails, where what you say during that short period of time represents who you are to that person. I had an interview two days ago & I made sure to talk more slowly, to think about his questions, to pay attention to his reaction to what I said to see if further explanation was necessary (I tend to be very long-winded, which is another problem because the more I talk the more I insert my foot into my mouth) and to be aware of what I was saying at all times.

I also re-read my emails once or twice before sending them to make sure they aren't making sweeping generalizations or saying things that could be taken as offensive. It takes a little work, but it's worth it in the end.

  4. How did you manage to carry 6 suitcases? Or were you able to take a taxi straight from the airport to your apartment, without having to change planes/trains/busses/whatever? I can't imagine bringing so much with me. I had trouble returning home after my research stay in the US one year ago with two suitcases, a carry-on and a handbag.

it was crazy, but I managed. my father took me to the airport. then I got one of those airport carts & checked in all the bags but my carry on & my cat. When I arrived here, I immediately got one of those big airport carts again & took it to the luggage belt. Then I got a cab and left the cart on the sidewalk, took the cab straight to the hotel, and the bellman helped me unload everything :)

I'm so bummed that the sevenseas shipping doesnt operate in my country. Can anyone recommend any other companies? It looks like I might be moving to France at the end of this summer, trying to coordinate everything just in case ....

  5. At least we can assume that your program's website is up to date. The program I'm applying to hasn't been updated since 2009... -__-

...but supposedly it's still a good department

I would bet 10000000$ its the New Paltz website ... (that's where I grew up tongue.gif)

  6. How crazy are you by now?

let's see. I started a twitter account last week because I coudn't take living with my thoughts anymore. I'm up to 56 tweets already. Oh, and I've started a twitter-fight with a midget/actor because, for some reason, his tweets were really p*ssing me off.

Does that sound crazy to you?

  7. Some of my favorite erroneous beliefs about PhD admissions among blithely ignorant family/friends/co-workers:

    * That it's like getting into undergrad

    * That it's like getting into a professional program (e.g., an MBA)

    * That your being "smart" is enough

    * That your having been successful with school-related things in the past is a reliable signal of how you'll fare

    * That it's truly a crap shoot so even with objective flaws to your application, you really do have as good a chance as anyone to get into your reach/dream school

    * That somehow the other gazillion applicants are rubbish so the fact that acceptance rates are <5% doesn't mean much for your prospects

    * That the stress/waiting ends with getting admitted rather than when a funding package you can live on is offered

    * That their admission to an academic masters or PhD program in the past represents current reality - if you're an older applicant, you'll have friends from undergrad, etc., who will use their own experience as a guide to your prospects, and you'll want to say "But it's so much more freaking competitive now!" etc.

All of these things combine to make people stupidly optimistic about your chances and can serve to both make you take your rejections as embarrassing and your admissions as less impressive/awesome.

    THIS. times 1000.

  8. I'm doing exactly this. Although its still early, it seems like I struck out this year in terms of Ph.d apps. I have a Master's in another, related field but I think I will pursue a Master's in Linguistics. I talked to a few knowledgeable people about this and they all think getting the additional experience will be worth it. I also think it will make me more competitive when I apply for Ph.d programs again. As you said, we're working towards a "final goal" -- so why rush it? I'm in academia for the long haul.

So as long as the finances work out, that's what Ill be doing!

  9. Thanks guys for all your positivity!!

Ive learned so much from this forum. I really wish I joined before I had sent out my applications because there is a plethora of great advice here. Good luck to everyone, can't wait to hear what your final decisions will be!! And how your first years go!

The Skype chat with the professor in Europe has been set up for tomorrow night. I'm so nervous! I don't know what to expect at all -- maybe he'll just want to give me information, but maybe he'll want to know more about my research background and interests, so I'm preparing for everything. I want to be ready because I have a tendency to go off on tangents while talking, then completely forget what the original question of my conversation partner was in the first place. So I want to have some bullet points ready :)

  10. Actually, I think the OP has a very valid argument.

However, as a Puerto Rican & thus a minority I was a bit offended. Therefore, l feel compelled to add that ¿ç<ñÇ?? and ¿¡¡=!!!!!. I hope that clears things up.

  11. Seems that MIT has sent out acceptances/rejections, finally. I didn't fare well here but it was a long shot anyway...

nor did I. its definitely a long shot and it seems like a lot of people applied for a spot there. This application year wasn't a successful one for me, but I'm willing to do it all over again just to apply to MIT again. I really, really loved the program. Will use it as inspiration to take the next year to improve my app smile.gif

  12. Staying in Europe isn't all that bad...sounds pretty enticing actually! :)

i agree! throughout this whole process ive been on the fence about moving back to the States. of course, to move back to do a ph.d at an awesome school is one thing; but to move back with no prospects of a job & no idea what I'm going to do is another! and i really do love living in Europe. let's see what happens!!
