Terrifying personal situation: rumors in the department
Zorah replied to talkinghead's topic in Officially Grads
Why would you tell anyone this anyway? -
I had nothing better to do so I went back to school.
-
I don't think it matters if an MSW program is highly ranked or not unless you plan on getting a PhD. Organizations that hire MSW's usually do not consider the school of the potential employee as part of the consideration.

Elimba - You are using Lauren Hill's picture as your picture - isn't that the same thing as taking someone's work?
-
Elimba? What does Lauren Hill think of you using her picture?

I have the opposite issue. I'm doctorate program and for the first time in my life I am in contact with religious people. I'm disliking how much their religion and faith comes up in class discussions.
-
Thus far, my professors really try to be considerate of costs and only assign one or no books per class.
-
I started a doctorate program in May and I work full time. There is no time for anything else, but school and work.
-
I'm thinking about purchasing a livescribe smart pen. Has anyone tried one of these?
-
There is only one answer. Quit school and go back home. There is no need to continue at something that is making you unhappy. Quit.

If they can call me by my first name, I can called them by their first name.

in the app process, when did you first contact profs?
Zorah replied to We regret to inform you's topic in Officially Grads
I never contacted the professors and got into a doctorate program. -
I majored in Sociology in undergrad and got a Masters i n Business and now I'm in a PhD program in Organizational Behavior. I have no tips to offer, but one thing I can say it does not matter what your undergraduate degree is in to pursue additional education. I know doctors who majored in undergrad in medieval history and literature.

NY is incredibly dog friendly. It should not be a problem.

I haven't attended Bard, but I'm very familiar with the school. Bard is not a school that provides a quick escape to NYC. It is on an isolated rural campus. Bard is very close to Rhinebeck, NY, which is small hip city, but not NYC. Bard is about a 2 1/2 hour Amtrak trip into NYC. If you are looking for NYC, you won't find it at Bard. Purchase on the other hand, is very close to NYC, but Bard is a better school.

I think that the coaching story should be left out. It is really not a smooth transition from coaching to debt repayment.

You'll find a job, but not a well paying job. In NYC, the salary range for a new MSW is $40.000 - $50,000.
-
By the way, Columbia University is in Harlem.
-
Yep, Hempstead is not NYC. Hostra is a suburb of NY. I would say it takes at least an hour to get to NYC. You can take a commuter rail into the City. Hempstead is cheaper than NYC, but not cheap.

Social Work is such a low paying field. After graduation you won't make $80,000 a year. For a social work degree, it does not make sense to go into this much debt. You'll never be able to pay it off with your salary. With a MSW and no experience at the most you'll make $50,000 a year.

What are the results so far for the older applicants?
Zorah replied to wendychina's topic in Waiting it Out
I applied to one doctorate program and got accepted. I'm 53. -
Now, I understand why I don't relate to much that is written on this forum. I'm too old. I'm 53.
-
I'll be 53 when I start in Fall 2011.You're never too old.
