I declined a couple weeks ago, but it was supposed to take a short amount of time before the fellowship money could be freed up. Good luck!

Dos and Don'ts for Campus Visits
crae replied to stillthisappeal's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I have my visit next week. I'm scared! I definitely feel like I don't know enough about professors' research, my own research, etc. -
So you want to get a Ph.d in the humanities?

This is hilarious!! -

No problem. :-) Just to be clear, I didn't make this video. When I first encountered it (after having watched the countless other videos like the one that started this thread), I was profoundly grateful and even cried a little bit. It articulates exactly my feelings about literature that were my reasons for wanting to get a PhD in the first place. I agree with you, the compensations of studying something you love, really dedicating yourself to it, are way beyond anything money could do for you. -

Who applied to UNL's Engish PhD program?

Weird. My GAMES page has my decision available. -

Thanks! No word on funding (I didn't receive a personal call or email), so according to what TC3 said, I'm not on the top of the list for it. I'm planning on declining this offer anyway, so no biggie. Good luck to everyone! -

I just received a generic (automatically generated?) email about my status change: accepted. Part of me thinks it might be a mistake, though, because when I went to MyRed, it didn't say anything about acceptance or rejection. Same with Games. Weird. Edit: Never mind. Games is updated - I was in too much of a hurry before. -
Any word on UNC at Chapel Hill?

(As a literature applicant) I finally emailed them and they, very very nicely and politely, informed me of my rejection. I'm kind of curious how long it would have taken otherwise. -
I just posted a waitlist notification - from the letter, it sounds like they're expecting to admit many of those waitlisted. I could be wrong. I'll be writing soon to have my name taken off, since I've already accepted another offer. Still, this was an uncommonly kind and personal letter.
-
Congrats, Sausundbraus! Are any of those admitted thinking they'll accept?
-
Thanks guys. :-)

To both of you: I'm also incredibly nervous about visiting schools (I'm not going to Minnesota, though). I'm really glad it's not just me. I've been out for two years, and I made a massive, impossible reading list so I can fill in major gaps and basically just not seem quite as dumb as I might otherwise. Ack! But as my mom pointed out, they're not interviewing us. They won't be saying, "So, what do you think of such-and-such important theorist?" We're already accepted. At least, that's what I tell myself.

I still haven't heard either. Argh! -
Pittsburgh Acceptance

I applied for the PhD (already hold an MA). I just officially declined the offer yesterday, so those on the waitlist might be getting contacted soon. . . . -

I also applied. It looks like a very nice program (funding issues aside). -
I'm out! I checked the website after I saw someone's result in the postings. Good luck to everyone else! :-)

Thanks so much, BBL, and congratulations! Could you share your area and experience with us? -

Oh my gosh, there was another acceptance tonight! I really can't wait to hear from them, no matter what the answer is. . . . hurry up, UNC! -
Wow, you guys are ambitious! I have an MA also, but I kinda want to wallow in grad school for as long as possible before facing the academic job market. . . .
-
Thanks again! All I know so far is that the funding is for only four years - eesh! Doing a PhD in four years seems a little reckless to me, but apparently it can be done. :-)
-
Thanks for the info, Lyoness! I, too, am tired of waiting, so this is good to know.
-
It was me! Thanks, everybody. :-)

Congratulations, Umsturz! Would you mind telling us about your experience and research interests? -
That's so cool! Congratulations! I was really hoping you'd get in this year after reading your story. Congrats again!!
