  1. Well, as of right now, I'm into one school. If I were to get turned down across the board from this point forward, I would definitely go. I'm hoping to have a few more choices, however.
  2. Mom's have no business being involved in college. Once they get involved in graduate programs, you basically need to transfer. Seriously though, no one wants to hear from your mom, especially not someone that you are WORKING for. For those of us in the real world, if we ever had our mom's call in for us for anything besides an emergency scenario where I am unable to call myself, we'd lose all credibility.
  3. Why do you think that?
  4. I go with CoachJRC -- by the time this afternoon is over, we will know much more about UNC.
  5. Any reason why you think we will hear from Wisconsin? They don't usually respond until mid-month historically. Do you have inside information?
  6. Yeah, that wasn't cool. CAPoliSciPHD does not deserve having his identity stolen.
  7. How about perception of the department by your advisors? Those are extremely important.
  8. Letter writers made an important commitment to you. You owe it to yourself to keep on top of them. They can and will forget otherwise.
  9. Sometimes we get students applying to our Ph.D. program in engineering using TA's as letter writers. That doesn't go over well...
  10. Are you an undergraduate?
  11. Congrats to the guy who got accepted at MSU!
  12. You should go Ocean's Eleven on the department and break into their files!
  13. ADMISSIONS PROCESS I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT MY APPLICATION IS UNDER ACADEMIC REVIEW BY MY PROPOSED GRADUATE PROGRAM? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? This means that the Graduate Admissions Office received your application, fee and transcripts and has notified your intended Graduate Studies Committee to begin the formal academic review process leading to a decision on your application. To check the status of your decision and to make sure that the program has received your letters of recommendation, personal statement and other required materials, please contact the graduate program to which you applied. When a decision is made on your application, you will receive a letter, or email. Prior to receiving a letter you may periodically check on your application status via our on-line service.
  14. I'd be shocked if that was true.
  15. Btw, great school selection for middle eastern!
  16. I would add Yale and Berkeley to that list as well.
  17. Last year, UNC started sending acceptances out on February 1st, a Friday. I would not be surprised if e-mails were sent out today as well. Keep us posted if you hear anything!
  18. I'm in too. Call around 7:20 Eastern.
  19. Was that email from an adcomm member or from one of your advisors?
  20. Almost no fellowship lasts all four years, and exceptons typically can be made to get you some teaching or research experience. Most times, in the humanities and social sciences, conducting research with an advisor is unpaid anyway. Trust me, fellowship is a god sent.
  21. Fellowships are almost always in lieu of a TA. They can be for first year only, first and fifth year, or any combination there of including all four or five years of your program. They are a great deal because you have no teaching obligations -- at all, for the length of your fellowship.
  22. Tidefan, Illinois should be due any day now based on historical trends. Do you know if they will be notifying this early again and if so, how were you notified? Do you remember when?
  23. So that means they should be notifying people, like what, now?
  24. We were responding to the person applying to english programs.
  25. Yeah, I was specifically told by my advisors that the best way of demonstrating fit is by showing which professors you could work with. I have absolutely no doubt that they are correct. As a graduate coordinator in engineering, our admissions standards are different than in the humanities and the social sciences, BUT students are a thousand times more likely to get admitted if they mention a few profs they are interested in working with. I go out of my way to make sure those profs see these files.
