Not yet, my record ins't' strong enough yet. I've been trying to get that broader impacts essay strengthened with my time this year. Hopefully I will be able to really nail that part so I can win next year.
I have been very successful in getting my students NSF awards. If you want some tips, please feel free to contact me privately
That goes for anyone, I am more than happy to help you with writing a successful application.
I think it is common for people in the hard sciences and engineering to go directly onto graduate school. The pay is better and most students who go into the job market with a bachelors never have any economic incentive to come back for an MS or a Ph.D.
I am going to apply next year when I can get even better letters and some more research experience under my belt -- NSF at least.
For those of you in the sciences, the NDSEG is an amazing award. I would highly recommend applying!
If the guy is going for a Ph.D., that is five years. Residency is five years as well. You really think that separating for five years is healthy for their marriage and their educational pursuits?
OSU is likely to get back this week but UNC could be next week. They typically respond the first few days of February, which happens to be on the weekend this year.
LOL, I know this all too well. I'm a graduate coordinator for a very large program in engineering. The fact that some of these schools don't have their act together -- not on admissions, but on materials -- is inexcusable, especially at this stage in the game.
MIT's application was awful, and they are the one school I have heard nothing from. I believe they have all my materials, but they have no application status checker whatsoever and they have not contacted myself or any applicants -- at least hat I know of.

This is interesting, and in some ways refutes some of the commonly held ideas of what faculty are looking for.
This is from a professor at Northwestern.
For me, ranking does matter, because it certainly matters to admissions committees. There was a certain point where I said: fit or not, I'm not applying there.
As much as I want to get my Ph.D., if i can't get a job afterward, there are other things I can do--my professors made this abundantly clear.
No, Columbia's doesn't. There is a supplemental form within the application (a PDF file) that you can download which will tell you if they've received everything.
A lot of ApplyYourself sites don't list anything, but it happens you applied to the few that are good about it...
