  1. If I get that Rochester spot, I'm shipping you a pallet of Ramen. Name your flavor!
  2. Anyone else still waiting on Maryland can stop waiting. I got a response from Dr. Ray--their roster is full. She's sending out the e-mail to the rest of the wait list tomorrow.
  3. That might be my office mate--he was accepted off the wait list this morning (thrilled for him--he was very geographically limited due to being a newlywed, and UB was his top choice).
  4. What is your sub-field? Any idea which way you're leaning at this point? (Rochester is one of my wait-lists--I just visited the campus yesterday afternoon with another wait-listed student, and the campus was just beautiful).
  5. Hope is not totally gone, but it is dwindling. I still haven't heard anything (and I e-mailed Dr. Ray a week ago). That, plus the fact that she offered "the last spot" to a modernist has me a little more than worried. The fact that we're down to the last week and I have yet to hear from any of my three waitlists has me a bit freaked out (and on top of THAT stress, I defend my MA thesis on Thursday). This week is going to kill me!
  6. Yup, as far as I know, I'm still on the wait list for Florida. They seemed to put a lot of stock in their track system. I wonder if the rejections were waitlisters for the same tracks that 1st round folks have already accepted.
  7. I hope it does, but I'm starting to lose hope on Maryland. I e-mailed Dr. Ray for an update on Tuesday, and have not yet heard back. She's been really good about returning previous e-mails (ie- within 6 or 7 hours). Plus, if you were offered the last spot, I think that means they've met their quota for early modernists (you're in post-modern lit, right?). Fingers still crossed and gut still clenched, but hope sadly dwindling.
  8. Did you officially decline yet? If it's primarily the money issue, I know that they don't have a "standard" funding offer (I was offered 14k, which I might not be accepting depending on waitlist results and other job related concerns). Plus, they have the Rogers Fellowship ($25k + tuition waiver--I'm not sure how this is awarded or even if its awarded every year).
  9. Congrats!! (Now offer up some details--did she call? e-mail? I e-mailed her a couple of days ago, but I haven't heard back yet)
  10. In the future, online programs may carry the kind of cache needed for a PhD app, but I would be inclined to think that they are still viewed rather skeptically at the moment. Too many of them are shady (not making any commentary on Mercy College, as I don't know anything about it, just a general observation). I would encourage your friend to look into onsite programs.
  11. No worries. I think the ND DGS felt worse about it than I did. I had already received my rejection, so I figured from the first that it was some kind of a mistake. It's easy for us to forget that the adcoms are insanely overworked this time of year. They're basically trying to sort through 300-500 applications using the same format that was used back when they only got 70-100 applications. Mistakes like that are bound to happen. Frankly, the most depressing part of the whole situation was the fact that I liked Notre Dame all the more for his reaction to his error. He's never going to see me again, and he could have been a jerk about it. Instead he apologized and showed genuine remorse for what was, in the end, a simple clerical error. For the folks going to Notre Dame--you've got a great DGS over there. As for the wait list situation, I can only hope it works out. Ideally, everyone ends up at a place that fits them best.
  12. Same. One of my friends asked me what I was doing next year. I told her that the only thing on the menu for certain is that I will be recovering from the ulcer that this process has undoubtedly given me! I finally caved and e-mailed both Dr. Ray and the DGS at Rochester to see if they had any updates. No response from either as of yet. I did get a phone call from UNLV, offering admission and a $14k stipend. I'm still concerned about the financial details, however, as the contact seemed non-committal on the amount of the tuition waiver (and if it's only 60%, like a UNLV admit from last year indicated, I doubt that I can swing it financially).
  13. I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm too terrified to e-mail her, as I don't have any other offers to accept at the moment. I know one of the three early modern admits accepted (he/she sent me a PM on this site). I know another was planning to accept. I know Wrader was going to decide after his campus visits, but I don't think he's on the Gradcafe anymore. This whole process is going to be the death of me. Last week, I received a phone call from the DGS at Notre Dame, wanting to know why I hadn't returned any of his e-mails and if I'd made a decision yet. I told him that I hadn't received any e-mails, and that the web site indicated that I was rejected. He said he'd look into it and get back to me--which he did via e-mail about 10 minutes later. He was working from the wrong list, and meant to call someone else with the same last name. I know that stuff like that is bound to happen with the huge numbers of applicants, and I actually felt bad for him (he really sounded embarrassed by the whole thing), but I'm starting to go stir crazy over here.
  14. Are you leaning towards Rochester? I met some of their Medievalists at a conference last October, and they raved about that part of the program-- they really loved it. Do you know when the visit days are/were for U of R? I'm on the wait list (Renaissance), and I'm curious as to when I might expect to hear back from them (which I assume will be after the visit days).
  15. Still waiting. No word at all on any of my three wait lists OR UNLV (who hasn't notified anybody at all yet)
  16. Take the Georgetown offer, tell your parents you went to Virginia and buy a car with the proceeds? Just IMHO, the difference between Georgetown and UVA isn't THAT big that it's worth costing your parents thousands of dollars. I'd e-mail the two schools and ask for their records of PhD placement over the last three years. That should give you a better picture of your choice.
  17. I think my odds just shrank. The Renaissance admit told me at the welcome weekend that he was going to accept, and I just received word that the third Renaissance admit (the one who wasn't at the weekend) is accepting as well. This whole wait-list thing is more stressful than I thought it would be (I don't expect to hear from Rochester until after their visit weekend in April, and Florida's wait list seems lengthy).
  18. I don't think UNLV has notified anyone yet. I know it's getting close to the deadline, but they've got some serious financial things to figure out in Nevada.
  19. I just checked the Apply Yourself site--same thing. Form rejection. I knew it was coming, and UVA was a bit of a reach. Glad to have it resolved one way or the other. It is now officially down to my final four (three wait-lists and one borderline-bankrupt school that has yet to notify anybody).
  20. Nope. Mine still says "Ready for Graduate School Evaluation." I've been trying to figure out if they want me to fill out the application for aid now or when/if I'm admitted. I'm also kind of hoping that one of my wait lists makes it possible to not need to worry about UNLV and their financial issues. Love the look of the program, but the funding issues scare the hell out of me.
  21. That's more for my office mate than me. Albany is his top choice, and he's wait-listed (similar sub-field to yours, as well). You're going to love UBuffalo. I visit the area all the time (I'm doing my MA at St. Bonaventure at the moment).
  22. Any word from Maryland yet? I've heard nothing (and it's taken on a greater importance since I've learned that my likely admit is on the verge of bankruptcy!)
  23. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42140407/ns/business-your_retirement/?GT1=43001 Just saw this article that has me even more concerned about UNLV--they are apparently the school most likely to essentially declare bankruptcy to get out of contracts/lay off tenured professors. I would be VERY concerned that whatever "guaranteed" funding offered would be safe for the duration of the degree.
