  1. Is anyone else starting to panic on UF? They notified two people on Thursday and Friday, and then nothing since. Could they be done already?
  2. Hey folks. As a bit of a stress reliever, what is everyone doing this summer? I know that plans may change depending on app success (ie- if we get in, we'll be moving, and if we don't, we'll be revising our app materials feverishly), but there will be SOME time for fun stuff this summer, right? I have a family reunion, and I applied to an NEH Folger institute ( http://www.folger.edu/Content/Folger-Institute/Program-Offerings/2011-NEH-Summer-Institute/ ). I find out on April 1st if I was accepted for the NEH thing. If I had the choice of the two, I'd probably pick the Folger institute over the family reunion. Anyone else trying to line up some nerdy summer fun?
  3. And the rejection is official. Knew it was coming, and I honestly appreciate that they didn't take forever to do it. If you haven't heard anything from Rutgers yet, check the website. Mine just changed.
  4. Rochester seems to be doing it the same way. No admits or wait-lists posted, but they have 4 rejections up already (on four different days). I almost wish the schools would get together and pick one deadline to notify everyone. We could call it "ripping the band-aid day" and all news, good or bad, would arrive in one angst-filled day rather than two+ angst-filled months. I entered to win the HGTV Dream Home about a hundred times. Not enough to donate a building to a school, but it's big enough for a binge-session when this insane semester lets out. If I win, everyone on the Grad Cafe is invited (except for people who got into schools that rejected me just kidding )
  5. I'm using more Bakhtin and Foucault in my thesis than anything else (though if I don't get on that this week, I'm going to be in trouble). I haven't had too much exposure to Lacan beyond the basics (ie- The Mirror Stage). His work has been so closely tied to education and pedagogy that I really want to delve into it a bit more. That was one of the perks of UF. It was the only school I saw that offered full seminars on individual theorists. So, as it's 8pm eastern time, should we assume the UF will not be notifying anyone today? I'm a bit panicked by it to be perfectly honest. My fear is that they made their offers last week, and only two of the admits happened to be on TGC. Would it be too neurotic to call and ask tomorrow?
  6. Definitely not just you. I'm in a bind. I REALLY want to take the dedicated Lacan course at UF, but I'm also mentally signed up for the Disability in early modern lit course at Maryland. That would be a lot of $$ in airfare, I would think!
  7. I actually had a very vivid dream that I was called this morning. I immediately sat up in bed and said, "Hello? Yes this is he." in a very loud and panicked voice. There was no phone call (my phone was across the room), but I did scare the hell out of my poor dog. I'm guessing that we won't be hearing anything this weekend? It would be strange to have a totally quiet Saturday and then go back to calling on a Sunday, wouldn't it? (sorry for the increased neuroses--UMD is still my top choice, but the more I think over the benefits of Florida, the more UF pulls even with, if not pulls ahead of, Rochester).
  8. Nothing for me. I'm not too hopeful for UVA at the moment. My hopes are hinging on a spot opening up at UMD. Beyond that, I still have Rochester, Florida and UNLV that still seem possible.
  9. I'm not sure who is doing the e-mailing, but you can add another wait-list to the tally. A woman in my MA cohort (long 18th century) received a wait-list notification from UT today. She's in a bit of a spot, because Toronto is her top choice, but she's also holding an offer from SUNY Buffalo, so she might have to make a really quick decision.
  10. I'm a little bit lamer. I checked the phone numbers on the UF website, and have been hoping for a call from a 352 area code. I don't know if I can stand this "trickle in" method of notifying that both Florida and Rochester seem to be doing. At this rate, I won't accomplish ANYTHING with my thesis this weekend!
  11. Looks like someone else got a phone acceptance a moment ago. The comics and visual rhetoric track. I wonder if all the calls will go out today, or if they will keep calling over the weekend. Does anyone know what size cohort UF usually takes?
  12. A fourth rejection just went up (this one via e-mail--Who e-mails rejections at 2am!?) Still no admits posted. This is about the strangest thing I've ever seen. It's like they are responding to one app every day. It's going to be a very stressful couple of days here. I'm wait-listed at my top choice, and my #2 and #3 seem primed to notify tomorrow or next week. Gaaah!
  13. Wasn't me. I'm a PhD applicant. Tomorrow is going to be a looooooooong day, isn't it?
  14. I replied, and she said that she'd send the itinerary soon. I haven't received it yet, but I'm sure they'll send it in good time. They are probably still ironing out the details of the schedule. While it's awesome that they are coordinating the visit day with their graduate conference, I'm sure it's a scheduling nightmare. Don't panic--they will send out the info when it's finalized (honestly, I wouldn't even bug them about it unless we get into the first few days of March without word). I look forward to meeting you guys, and I know of some good places to hit in DC if y'all want to take a Metro ride (I know of an awesome sushi place a block away from the Folger library).
  15. A third rejection up today as well. This is really strange. They are still about 7-10 days away from their notification window (based on the last couple of years). No acceptances or wait lists posted yet, just rejections. Is everyone in this thread still in play for Rochester? They are officially my second choice (behind UMD, where I'm wait-listed).
  16. I received a rejection letter from U Delaware today. I received a rejection e-mail from them last week. I received a rejection update from their website a little before that. I'm tempted to call and ask if they're absolutely sure they want to reject me (to make it any clearer, they'd need to hire a hit man). I'm actually completely over this rejection--so much so that the repetition of the rejection is almost amusing at this point. I'm hoping that, since Delaware is hogging all the rejection karma, my other "live" schools will have no other choice but to admit me with funding. I fully expect U Delaware to reject me via text message, smoke signal, telegram, and carrier pigeon in the coming days. Anything less will be a true disappointment.
  17. That's why I brought it up before. My office mate's sub-field is basically: modernisms, 20th century american, modernist/contemporary american poetry/poetics, philosophy & lit He's doing stuff with digital poetics, Robert Lax, Pieces for the Left Hand and a whole bunch of other stuff that I don't understand (it's the weirdest office pairing of all time. He studies the newest stuff in the cohort, while I study the oldest--it's a good thing we both like sushi, or we'd have nothing to talk about while procrastinating on our theses).
  18. Cool. I've never actually been to Minnesota (though my thesis adviser went there three or four hundred years ago, and he speaks highly of it). Maryland is great, though. Not only are the stacks awesome, but it's a short Metro ride away from the Folger and all the awesomeness that can be found in DC. Are you visiting on your own or during the welcome day/grad conference?
  19. Mine hasn't changed at all. Who are you still waiting to hear from? Any that rank higher on your list than UB? (my office mate is getting a bit twitchy ).
  20. I'm not trying to get too excited (because then it will hurt all the worse if I don't get in--I only have three more "live" applications out there, and UMD is SO much better than any of them for me--It's literally down the road from 80% of my family in an area that I know well, and it happens to be a Godly fit for me research interests). That said- In years past, Gradcafe has only shown about 4-6 UMD wait-list postings. Also, Dr. Ray mentioned that the list isn't ranked, because it all comes down to how the initial offers shake out. It seems, to me at least, that there would be one or two folks in each sub-field on the wait-list. It also seems like they have a secondary wait-list, because the e-mail said to notify them if we accept another offer, so that they "could notify someone else of their position on the wait list." Basically, we're rooting for the people who received offers in our sub-fields to get/accept better offers. Is Wrader still on the Cafe? I hear Minnesota is wonderful. In all serious though, no pressure. If UMD is your best fit, I know you have to go for it. With a few other early-modernists likely to be in a 10 person cohort, I can always hope that another one turns them down.
  21. Tell me about it. It's a daily double-whammy, too. I'm obsessing over my inbox all day (because admits have historically been notified via e-mail) and then dreading the ride home to check the mail (because rejects have historically been notified by post). It's enough to make a guy go nuts.
  22. I e-mailed Dr. Ray to ask about the size/ranking of the wait list. I was told that they don't rank the wait list, and it's all in how the acceptances shake out. Out of the people accepted/wait-listed, what are your sub-fields? I'm an early-modernist, so it looks like my best bet for admission is if the 2-3 early-modernists already accepted take other offers...
  23. From the wording of the e-mail, I'm guessing that they have a tiered wait-list. Dr. Ray wrote something along the lines of "if you accept another offer, please let us know so that we can inform someone else of their status on the wait list." So if you don't hear anything, that might not mean auto-rejection. You could be one e-mail away from a spot. Incidentally, if any of the currently admitted early modernists have other offers, I'll be your bestest friend if you take those offers and turn UMD down.
  24. I was wait-listed for UMD via e-mail today. I had completely assumed that I was out of the running. It would be an absolutely perfect scenario for me--and even if I don't get in off the list, it's nice to know that I got close with at least one of my applications.
