  1. Hahaha. This is my thread. My office mate and I are the kings of the wait list. Between the two of us, we have five waitlists at five different schools (Albany and Buffalo for him, Maryland, Rochester and Florida for me). I REALLY hope that one of my wait lists pans out. I'm already 31, and I want to pursue this dream while I can (I've already noticed a frightening decline in my ability to pull off a successful all-nighter at this age).
  2. I e-mailed as well and received what appears to be the same (form) letter. Has anyone been rejected by Florida? It seems like a rather large wait-list.
  3. Wow. I had no idea it wasn't even a full tuition waiver. My thesis adviser really pushed UNLV (I like some of the profs there, and the BJJ is a great resource but UNLV is still way behind my two waitlisted schools), and he said that he heard I was essentially already admitted. That said, I won't be taking out more loans to do a PhD program, so if it's not a 100% tuition waiver with a reasonable stipend, then it won't matter if I am admitted there or not.
  4. Just got back from the UMD visit weekend. I'm completely in love with this program and the campus. It was a little awkward being there as a wait-lister (particularly since I got a chance to hang out with the admitted folks in my sub-field--I don't WANT them to go somewhere else. They were cool as hell. I want to go to the program with them. It was a strange dynamic). The English building was absolutely beautiful, and just about every professor I spoke with was unbelievably intelligent and friendly (the DGS really sets the tone, and she's extremely upbeat and pleasant). The current grad students were really cool as well, and they put on a very nice graduate conference today. They had a nice selection of papers, and a fantastic keynote speaker (even if the speaker had a problem or two with the technology). I'm really hoping that there was a 3rd Renaissance scholar who didn't attend the weekend due to having acceptances from Harvard, Princeton and James Franco Universities, as I would love to get in off the waitlist while still getting a chance to work with the folks I met this weekend.
  5. Hm. I'm a grown man with a lineman's build. I don't think I could pull off that look (though I'm sure it would make an impression on the adcomm!)
  6. How formal is everyone dressing for this weekend? Since I'm wait listed and not formally admitted, I don't want to be too casual, but I don't want to be the overly formal rube, either (plus, depending on how quickly this coming storm develops, it might pour down rain on Friday).
  7. You're not the first. I was on here two years ago (Titus Andronicus), but I couldn't remember my password. Hence, I changed characters (I figure with Shakespeare's character catalogue, I can forget my password a few more times before I need to worry!)
  8. Looks like there have been a few official wait-list e-mails in the last 24 hours. I'm starting to think the UF might be out of the running for me (torn on it. I dread the heat of Florida, but Dr. Homan would be a perfect mentor).
  9. So have we decided which weekend we're going to party at my new HGTV dream home? I'm due to win it in the next couple of weeks or so (I'm all about positive thinking ).
  10. I don't know. I just got the wait list letter yesterday. I hope there's still hope (my office mate is still waiting for his first admit, and he applied to U of R as well). Good luck!
  11. Me too. I was actually born in Rochester, but moved away when I was 5. I bet things seem shorter there now...
  12. I was wait-listed at U of R this afternoon (via post). It was a very nice letter from Rosemary Kegl. It didn't say anything about ranking the list, just that it was a "short" wait list. A friend of mine was also wait-listed at Rochester (though she has an offer in hand that I think she prefers). It's not an admit, but it's another chance in the wait-list lotto (and both my wait-lists are from schools in my initial top 5).
  13. I just received an e-mail from Dr. Ray with a pdf of the itinerary. I'm assuming everyone else got it as well.
  14. That probably doesn't bode well for me, as I am also an early modernist. Congrats on the admit.
  15. Anyone willing to claim the U of Rochester admit? Sub-field? Based on previous years, I'm guessing we're going to hear one way or the other on Friday/Saturday.
  16. Where are the four admits? It's odd that nobody has claimed them yet. Two of the posts in the results board posted their sub-fields, but the other two didn't (and I'm curious/nosey). Anyone willing to claim the UF admits?
  17. There goes another one. I've pretty much lost all chance of being productive this evening. I'm now doomed to stare at my phone whilst praying to the gods of academia to make it ring. --On a more amusing note, I did just find a way to use a quotation from Kindergarten Cop in my title and introduction to my current thesis chapter.
  18. I applied for the PhD. I'm getting my MA this in two months (assuming I ever tear myself away from this website and my inbox long enough to make any real progress on my thesis!)
  19. It wasn't me. It looks like the admits so far are comics, Victorian and one unknown. I'm early modern. I'm also currently a basket case. I was surprised to see that the stipend was only ~11k per year. I know some of you have lived in Gainesville before--Is that possible on 11k per year?
  20. I'm indifferent to Austin (never been, though I have a cousin who lives there and loves it), but UT-Austin is phenomenal. I almost applied there (mainly because I realized that I had cited about half of their faculty), but decided not to because of my already high number of "shoot for the moon" apps. I don't know if he still does it, but I think Tim O'Brien used to do stints as a visiting lecturer at UT-A in the past (I love O'Brien's books). I really hope you get in, Tortola. If you do and O'Brien ever visits, you'll have to snag me an autograph.
  21. Same here, just a question of how far away. Rochester is a move two hours north. Florida is about 20 hours south. UNLV is I don't even know how many hours west. UMD is 6 hours south (though if I don't get in anywhere, I'll be moving to MD anyways to return to my HS teaching job. I'm on a 2-year leave of absence to get my MA). Best of luck Tortola and Lyoness!
  22. Is this like last year when they told about 50 people that they were at "the very top of the wait list"? Seriously--check out the results forum from last year. Post after post by people excited about owning the top spot on the UVA list. I don't know what they were thinking. If they knew about this website and they still did that to people, it's a little bit cruel.
  23. I haven't heard anything yet. I was going to give it until Monday or Tuesday before e-mailing. I'm also driving down (I'm about 6 hours north, in western NY state). The important info for me is what time things are happening on Friday. I'd prefer not to miss my Thursday night Shakespeare seminar (since I'm already going to miss it two weeks later for the CEA conference), but even if I leave right after class, I wouldn't get to MD until 4am. If there are events planned in the morning/early afternoon on Friday, I doubt I would give a good impression on no sleep.
  24. Okay, two straight days of zero notifications. Who will bite the bullet, call their office and ask the scary question...
  25. You haven't heard anything from SUNY Buffalo?? They notified weeks ago (admits, waitlists and rejections). If you've heard nothing at all from them, you should give them a call.
