  1. Not a peep.
  2. I surely hope i never have to move to a city where either of our parents live. But, i agree with socialpsych. It is incredibly hard to get two tenure-track positions in the same town/city/university. It sucks, but I know a lot of professors who lived apart from their partner for MANY years.
  3. DAMN!!! I want to hear this week!
  4. I cannot speak for stanford, but berkeley--there has only been one admit--contacted via personal email from a professor (not dgs). They usually take around 35-40, so my guess is that they have only just begin notifying, and that one who has heard was contacted by a potential advisor. Don't fret--I don't think berkeley even does a waitlist.
  5. Just kidding--didn't notice your signature.
  6. oh NO!!! I'm so sorry!!! WHere else have you applied?
  7. Yeah, that was my posting on grad cafe...and I don't think there are any other on there. I imagine they want to talk to me because I don't have a soc background and wasn't able to get into "why soc" with the 500 SOP word limit. Don't Worry!! BUt, the email they sent said "we will be making decisions very soon."
  8. I would say the writing sample is hugely important, and they definitely read them for everyone they eventually accept. A faculty member at Penn I have been in contact with says it is incredibly important.
  9. Don't be depressed! Wait til tomorrow, and if you don't hear by late afternoon, then call them.
  10. Well... If you want to do qualitative and more "edgey" research, it is totally berkeley. Yes, the funding is generous at stanford, but it is CRAZY expensive to live nearby. But, berkeley will support you. If you look at placement and fellowships, Berkeley grads have a far better track record and have turned out MANY more "prominent" sociologists who do cutting edge stuff. Berkeley also has AMAZING other programs--Rhetoric--Judith butler (not just a feminist theorist), Poli Sci--Wendy Brown, Bolt Law school (really good), etc. The social sciences are incredibly strong. Plus, berkeley is an awesome place to live.
  11. Yes, but they will still support grad students. they've been a mess for years, but this has mainly translated into smaller cohorts, higher undergrad fees, etc.
  12. NO WAY!! Berkeley all the way! For your consideration: The areas each campus are in are VERY different, even though they are both in the bay area. Stanford: Mega rich, really expensive, fancy restaurants, right by a huge fancy mall. A banker/CEO neighborhood (seriously, I have a friend who's company CEO lives in a palo alto mansion. Berkeley: though also expensive to live, much more eclectic, charming, and generally more "intellectual."
  13. One school finally updated regarding transcripts, but it says I still have a Letter or Rec missing!!! GRRR
  14. That is pretty good news, no? I would think they wouldn't bother sending an email if you were a reject.
  15. They are making calls, therefore it takes a bit a time. I would wait until 4:30 cali time. Perhaps there are some admits asking lots of questions and holding up the notifications.
  16. What a fantastic day for you!!! Two offers from top 10 programs in less than 5 hours!!! MEGA CONGRATS!! You are going to have tough decisions ahead of you!
  17. I know!!! Everyone has been so successful even this early on!! YAY! We are awesome!
  18. Thank you!!! I'm definitely much more relaxed. Though UNC was not at the top of my list, I got excited and starting looking on craigslist at the awesome houses on 4 acres that cost about half of the rent I pay here (san diego). I saw a ucsd soc rejection--I hope that wasn't you!
  19. SOrry, 1,700. In my excited state I added an extra 0.
  20. Just got an offer from UNC Chapel Hill: Tuition waiver and health insurance plus $15,000 a year to TA. Have to pay 17000 student fee. But, NC is really cheap to live.
  21. YAY!!! Just got a call from UNC--I'm in!! It was from a potential advisor I mentioned in my SOP. It seems like they passed along apps to the advisors mentioned, so I'm guessing notification depends on when your advisor wants to let you know. Full funding for 4 years: next year: 15,000 + health insurance and tuition waiver, but you have to pay a 1,700 fee. Recruitment weekend is march 4-6. They don't pay for travel, but you do stay with a grad student. YAHOO!
  22. Yep, same here--not holding my breath but very curious to know. Plus, I want one assured acceptance so I can breathe easy.
  23. Ah ok. So someone else out there has received an email. Show yourself!
  24. Slothy, I know you got a phone call, but did you post again today saying you got an email? There was another post.
  25. To the recent UNC admit post: CONGRATS!!! Quick questions from an anxious waiter: Was the email personalized, generic? From DGS, potential advisor, etc? Thank you!! And congrats again!!
