I am west coast, came from ETS, so 9:30am. But still, it was pretty fucking unexpected.

Yeah--convex is right about living in La Jolla if you are not one who likes to go "out." And when I say "out" I do not mean a club or something gross like that. I mean a dive bar, a museum on weekends, coffee shops, art walks, farmers markets, etc. I like to do the weekend farmers market, hang out in a quiet dive bar on wednesday night, get breakfast at a cool place on the weekend, etc. For me, La Jolla was miserable and expensive. All of the apartments have been constructed in the last 30 years (thin white walls and beige carpet), versus a lot of places in hillcrest, northpark, southpark that were built in the 30's (original hardwood floors with tiny doors and arched doorways). Just a difference in taste and lifestyle. Also, it works out that most undergrads live in la jolla or clairemont, and most grad students (in humanities and social sciences) live in the grad housing or northpark, hillcrest or southpark. Just happens that way.

yep, same scenario and it turned into an acceptance. 30 min conversation about the program, asked a few questions--less than a week later I get an acceptance email. But, this was with the DGS, not a potential advisor. So, just hope she/he relayed how awesome you are!
-
got an acceptance email at 6:30 this morning--Best early morning treat EVER!!!!
-
I too was a "nontraditional" applicant who interviewed on monday and was notified via email today. She said final letters won't be coming for a few weeks.

Yay indiana!!! So who else is in? Anyone planning to visit?
-
Visit Visit Visit!! I am a firm believer that you will flourish best where you are enjoying your life outside of school, enjoying the people around you (grad students and faculty) and find yourself in line with the academic "ethics" of the department you're in. Go to the schools, talk to current grads and see what will fit you best! For me, the idea of 150 grad students in one department and the fact that they don't fund all of those students really turns me off (Wis).

Yep--my top two are penn with melissa wilde and indiana with steensland. But, pearce wouldn't be the end of the world.

I'm waitlisted at Minnesota and in at chapel hill. It is unlikely i will attend unless I get in no where else. I will notify them as soon as I can!!
-
I know a few people who had their funding cut a year early. Basically, the department cut them off, but as long as they were able to get an RA or TA position with another department, they still had a tuition waiver and health insurance. It can happen, but there are usually other departments that will be able to fund you.

Sorry, but there are a bunch of Northwestern (Chicago) results. Am I retarded and sociology is on their chicago campus or something?
-
I say yes, you have a good chance. Go, be great, and make them want you!
-
Silence from Chicago and northwestern for me. Ugh. It's really annoying. I just want to know so I can book my flights to ones I know I'm in at and know it won't conflict!
-
Ugh--no decision for me either! Looking at last year's results, it look as if they just don't inform you if you are waitlisted. LAME!!!
-
I applied---really excellent sociology of culture and qualitative methods. Seems rather nontraditional. Plus, one of my LOR writers whom I love was just courted and hired by northwestern sociology, so they know what's up.

Whether or not its allowed, there are so many interdepartmental affairs with grad students, other faculty etc. I think it is ok most of the time unless the affair takes place while the professor is responsible for grading or in some way evaluating (diss committee) the grad student.
-
I reread all the time. But it sucks because I found a few mistakes. For my northwestern SOP, I forgot a period after THE FIRST SENTENCE. On my word doc, the sentence ended at the end of the line, so I didn't notice. When I uploaded it, it ended in the middle fo the line and was really obvious. DOH!!! BUt, sometimes I read them and i think, Damn, this is pretty good.

Thanks tonights

I had a mega crush on one of my TAs. It was in a gender studies course, so I sortof though he was gay. Turns out, he was not. We kept in touch after the course ended, and a year later, we started dating and have been together for 2 years now.

Yeah, UNC was 15k. Yes, LA is pricey, but I wouldn't say they are dissing you. My guess is that instead of dramatically reducing their cohort size, they decided to take a few thousand a year off of the funding package.
-
15k is about average for a public university. Don't feel bad--they still want you.
-
HAHAHA! Love it!

Well, I did mean "someone in the life sciences" as a generalization. I don't expect them to keep up with contemporary theory. I stand by my original assertion--for most in the hard sciences unfamiliar with current social science and humanities scholarship, the stuff one does in rhetoric program would not resonate, and I wouldn't expect it to. Doesn't lessen it's critical value. My tone is the result of general contempt for those in the sciences who devalue the social sciences and humanities and find it "a waste of time," oftentimes because they are no good at it, don't understand it and/or got bad grades in their writing courses that brought their gpa down. Of course this is not everyone in the sciences, but I've encountered quite a few. So, you caught me. I was condescending. On behalf of the much maligned "soft science" folks out there--deal with it.

THey get jobs in academia--social sciences and humanities.

I didn't mean to be offensive, and of course that doesn't mean they don't have outside interests. I said the "uninitiated" would have no clue what they were saying. You, clearly, do not fall into that category. I do not expect to pick up a neuroscience journal and have any idea what the fuck is going on. That is all I meant. For something like rhetoric, it is hard to describe to someone unfamiliar with they type of scholarship that goes on in the humanities and social sciences.
