Anyone else applying to Ed programs this year?
missashley replied to t_ruth's topic in Education Forums
speaking of hgse - has anyone heard anything at all? there is no chance of an interview is there? I have spent a gazillion dollars on flying out for interviews already. i bet they make us wait all the way until mid march... -
Me again. I just withdrew myself from the Yale Drama applicant pool - after being invited for an interview and everything. Somehow at the last minute, I realized that I didn't want to spend three years in connecticut chasing a degree that may or may not help me in the long run (theater management mfa). it seems that the degree would be more helpful in a large city with lots of theater, but I am firmly planted in the arts community in my hometown, and don't think that a big fancy (expensive) degree would do that much for me. So... looks like someone else is going to be asked for an interview soon! sigh. anyone else had a similar moment of realization? I really thought they were my first choice school...

Is anyone else interviewing or has already interviewed at Yale Drama? I am going this week for an interview and curious about the process... also what to do in new haven when i am out on the town after its over. I have checked the cities forium on this site, but thought that I should check in with you guys too thanks!

One of my schools admits about 70 a year to all of its programs, and 5 or 6 within my department. One of the students that I got to visit with told me that "we all pretty much date and are only friends with other people from the department" Also they all hang out at the same bar (yes, just one bar) The school has class 6 days a week, with 40 hours a week required service hours in addition to classroom time.. What if i get there and think they are a bunch of weirdos? i will be trapped! hopefully my dream husband is among the 30-35 men in my school (ps this school has a 6% acceptance rate, so i don't think this will actually be a real problem for me)

Yogi Tea! I like the calming tea- if you make it with two bags it's even more soothing and peaceful - but it has never made me sleepy Deep breathing and running outside. i am glad i am not the only one. i feel like this underlying stress had made me randomly act like a total b* lately. it has also, however, made my house sparklem with all of the chores I have been doing to keep my hands busy.

Thanks! The dean there is supercool. I really liked meeting with her during my first interview. hopefully just another week or two til we all at least know something. what are you planning to study?
-
Oh, and me! hi! I'm a theater undergrad interested in education and outreach. Interviewing at Columbia next week, waiting on HGSE, Yale's Drama and Washington University in St. Louis' MA in Theatre and Performance Studies. Ash

I did, but just to one... and i have tried to forget all about it because i don't think we will hear anything for another month. silly harvard.

so where are you applying for an MFA and in what program?

Hello again that is so exciting... congratulations on finding a school. I have my first big interview next week, and am so nervous that it will end on a "thanks for applying, but..." I think it would be so cool to study in the city - hopefully developing connections that will make what i call a "masters in poverty" somewhat worthwhile -

Hi! That's me! I think it is just the two of us! I also visited Pratt before I applied - the program director, Monica Shay, was amazing. She and i kept in touch for a little bit. The program was not a great fit for me, though, and I ended up falling in love with columbia and yale. i am so jealous you have already heard! ash -
I quit too.. dec 13th. and last night almost caved after receiving the most stressful emails from two of my schools. i made guacamole instead. be strong.. you can do it!

Thank you. I hadn't wanted to bother her - but it seems like a great idea just to drop her a quick note and show my interest. travelling to new york from texas (or from anywhere) can be really pricey. i will practice my "studious yet clever" voice for my phone interview.

So I got an email inviting me for an interview. I only applied to three schools, so it is one of my top choices. I was actually able to meet with the dean of my program for a two hour conversation/interview in her office before they even had my application, and she and I got along very well (she asked me a ton of questions and said I was "just like her at my age"). I mentioned this in my SOP in a way... Now, the email the school sent says "we strongly suggest an in person interview (at the student's expense all the way) but would be happy to arrange a phone interview as well" a trip up there would cost me 700-850 all in, for a half hour interview. phone call would be free, but i dont want to show i am not committed. Does the fact that I already came out and spent a day get me brownie points, or should i just shell out the cash for a visit? it would also mean time off work, but do they expect that everyone would be so happy just to interview at their school that they would drop everything? This school has the worst funding and the highest cost of living, so it is kind of my back up/reach school (ie i really dont want loans but i would do it if i had to) sigh. help please???? ash

we barely even discuss grad school in my house... super touchy - he doesn't think ldr would work, and that would be the end of it (2 years). when i got my first interview request he said "that's great. congratulations." This is not making the waiting part any easier, but I don't think it's worth stressing out about until I know for sure that I am in, that I have funding, and that I am ready to move away. I have enough pre-stressing as it is, no?

The most annoying thing that happened to me today was a mail in the inbox from my first choice school re: your application to xyz program. I waited for my superslow cell phone to download the message, only to receive a "we have all of your papers and will review them now." Duh, they have had them for two months. grrr...

my car is in the shop, and my rental car has xm radio...the met opera station is amazing and i love it. also, classic vinyl. i think xm is going to replace applications as my favorite obsession.

Chuck! i love chuck! he's so dreamy. also you can watch online. the new flight of the conchords was really funny too

Those sound like great programs as well. Did you apply to Yale dramaturgy? I was at the open house last semester, and there was a tiny group, less than 5 I think (out of 40) at the open house that were applying to the dramaturgy program. best of luck - hopefully our decisions will come quickly

Anyone else getting annoyed by emails from current school?
missashley replied to Tinyboss's topic in Waiting it Out
I am not getting so many annoying emails from my school, but I have gotten two spam letters in my inbox this week sent from HSBC, the bank, about being preapproved or qualified for something. When you are waiting to hear from HGSE, this is not very funny at all. -
Hello again I am going to school to focus on education and outreach programs - I started a theater company several years ago and while it was rewarding and loads of fun, it was missing strong education and outreach and felt kind of pointless. Now, I am trying to start an independent company that works with different arts organizations and connects them with schools and their communities ((bla bla bla this reminds me too much of my sop already ) anyway, they have schools that teach you how to run arts organizations and non-profits and i would like to go to one of them ps sweeping the floor lol. perhaps there is some funding in that?

The scariest part of this, for me, has been this: when i was filling out one of my schools separate financial aid apps, it asks about your oustanding student loans. There is a number to call, 18004fedaid, that tells you, over the phone, how much money you already owe the government. then, you have to pick up a pen and write that number down for someone else to read. a sobering telephone call, indeed, especially for a recent grad of a private university.

I would ask the students there what they think you should see that night. Since they are in your dept, they might share your interests... I did that when I had less than a day at one of my schools and got to check out the coffee shop, bar, sushi place, and library where most people in my dept like to hang out. (it was a small town so there was only one of each:) What kind of theater phD are you pursuing?

That made me laugh. I thought about all of the meanings for can and had a visual/momentary flash of genius that i could have my toilet installed next to my mailbox in the front yard. that way i would never have to leave while i was waiting for the post to arrive. don't tempt me... thank you.

I had a pre-application interview during a campus visit. I set it up through e-mail, and luckily the dean was able to make time to really sit and talk about the program. My interview in a few weeks is with the same person, which takes off loads of stress, but does not change the fact that they are so selective and the stakes are higher. It's much worse to interview and not get in than just to get rejected at the beginning, in my opinion...

Hi. Wouldn't it be amazing if, when they asked you for an interview, there would be a way to know how the odds of acceptance changed from you vs all applicants to you vs all interviewees? If only there was a way to secretly obtain this info... maybe if i posed as a magazine reporter who telephones during the day to collect this kind of data
