If you meet your partner in grad school where will you live?
socialpsych replied to Torn's topic in The Lobby
Well, if you're both staying in academia, you kind of have to make do anywhere you can get jobs in the same place...it's a big problem for dual-career academic couples. In other words, you probably won't have the option of being in either your hometown or your partner's... -
Yeah, but they said they were still going to have on-campus interviews and made it pretty clear that that was the next round. I have no idea.
-
Hey, could you guys do a favor and submit your results as "social psychology," not just "psychology"? Since they are different programs, would really love to know which ones are which...thanks!!
-
I can't believe it's been 3 weeks since my first acceptance! With any luck that means I am halfway through the wait...wow!
-
I'm still holding out hope for Davis, but maybe I shouldn't be...
-
I haven't heard anything since the Columbia interview. Waiting on pins and needles...
-
Wow, if someone would actually do that to you, that's terrible! I plan to tell people, but I am in a completely different situation--still in school. I only know one other person applying to my top choice school and I'm pretty sure she would NEVER do anything to sabotage my plans--in fact, if I get in, she will probably get in too. I could see being treated poorly by one's boss...but I am not in danger of being treated poorly by my profs, so I think it's safe!
-
Granted. But the UCs are a mess financially.
-
BTW, congrats!!

UM HELLO STANFORD!
-
Just an outsider's observation...the sociology group on gradcafe seems to be, like, the strongest soc applicants in the entire pool. You guys seem to all get in to the top programs! How is this possible?!

any "what are you going to do now" fantasies?
socialpsych replied to katanianQ's topic in Waiting it Out
Careful. You have to actually earn the degree first! -
Not a peep from UC Davis. Rather mysterious, since I was expecting the on-campus interview invites to go out (to others if not to me!) a couple weeks ago...
-
I think it would be worth asking. If they didn't say anything about financial assistance there might not be any, but it is certainly reasonable of you to wonder. Can you tell from the results board when your other school in that area is likely to notify? If it's soon, you might as well wait until you hear from that one...

I have had a couple, and they were pretty similar. The format was 1) explain your research interest, what it means, and why it matters; 2) why do you want to go to this program (and one asked what specific research questions I would like to explore with her if I went there)?; 3) do you have any questions for me? I think in between 1 and 2, one of them asked me to explain a particular project I've been working on. To address your worry, they were not at all about assessing my general knowledge of obscure trivia or anything like that. Just have articulate, concise explanations of your interests and projects, and you will be fine.

College?! That is so early! I think I heard April 1st...
-
Oh believe me...I DO remember. If I hear from all my schools in the next 4 weeks (unlikely), that's going to be something like one piece of news every two days!!! If only...

It's TUESDAY! Come on grad school gods...drop me a line. 8)

C.C., UCSB has made its first round of offers, but I think it has also notified some people of rejections (via the website I believe). So you are most likely on a waitlist.
-
I didn't apply, but I noticed it looked like a rough day for social people on the results board... Their loss, guys! :!: Hope you are all doing okay!
-
uberskooper, is that you on the results page with the Wright State acceptance? I hope so. If so, congrats...super excited for you
-
Yeah, another LDR survivor here. We did it for one year, East Coast - West Coast. I would not want to do it again, but if you know it will be over (or at least better) soon, that should help.

Totally depends on the field. Professional schools pay way better.

Communicating with potential advisors while waiting?
socialpsych replied to Fritzie's topic in Waiting it Out
I don't think that's true everywhere. At one of my schools I am pretty sure there's a core adcom of 3 profs. Of course they will probably consult the others in the program before making any final decisions, but I think they do most of the reviewing. At another one of my schools, all the faculty, staff, and grad students are involved, as you said. So it really varies! -
It probably depends on the program, especially in psych (although I don't know much about ed psych). I know some of my programs are very lab-based, only-work-with-one-advisor, and some are completely collaborative, where students are expected to work with at least 3 people and the assignment of a particular advisor is fairly arbitrary within the group that matches each student's interests.
