  1. So far I've only noticed crushes on males in this thread. So maybe this is a female thing to do (or a homosexual male). I know as a guy I never had a "crush" on any professor or girl in a class in college. I'm normally to focused on the material to think about anything else (wow I sound like a nerd).
  2. Never even heard of academia.edu... should I know about it?
  3. My undergrad really alienated people for their views. If you weren't apart of a certain "club," then many people looked down on you for being "narrow minded" or just stupid. There was a huge prejudice there. The time that showed this most was when I was friends with the vice president of our school's Pride Alliance and I would eat lunch in their office with him. One time an impromptu meeting started up while I was there, and most people in there didn't know me so I supposed they assumed they were in like minded company. Somehow they got onto the topic of bringing a band to one of their events, and one of the bands (who was pro-LGBT) was also a Christian band. The main coordinated after bringing this up immediately took them off the list saying "We don't want fucking Christians at our events" as I sat there, a straight Christian. I'd like to point out that everyone was in agreement on this topic. One of numerous examples!
  4. I 100% refraim from with faculty and mostly with peers. I do not have extreme views, but I do not have liberal views either. I am more of a moderate and the particular university I was in is very liberal. Anything I said seemed to be controversial to them, so I stopped saying anything.
  5. The new GRE may be to your liking then because they give you an on screen calculator... I'd say apply to schools and take it again! it depends what field you're going into though.. I'm guessing chemistry... You're close to 1200 it shouldn't be so bad.
  6. Personally I hate my WD. It's the worst of my externals. I have a 8 year old Maxtor HD that runs better than my WD. It's testy. It frequently wont connect to my computer (and long ago the E-Sata stopped working), and it also excuses itself from being connected to my comp too often. I'd go with Seagate or even Maxtor (I just formatted the windows externals I had for Mac, easy)
  7. I personally bought one of my books and have been reading it. The course considered to be "harder." I had already read a huge chunk of an intro style book to one of my other classes. I'm excited for school so why wouldn't I start early? I'm already working this summer...
  8. I use LaTex but when any office type things come up (powerpoint, a letter) I always prefer MS Office. Open Office is just not the same.
  9. The rail system I've figured out, it was more the busses which are confusing. Where they go.. etc. The website seems totally unhelpful.
  10. Has anyone taken any time to figure out Septa yet? Their website is a pain, but I hear there is some program like hotbus or something (an app for iphones) that helps out alot?
  11. those are some terrible paintings
  12. Be careful. Many schools have rules against doing that. Many professors consider their lectors their IP and you are breaking copyright (in a sense) and infringing on their rights by taping the lecture. They can get pretty angry.
  13. I would say you should ask your department!
  14. I wouldn't knock IKEA too much. It really is great for what you pay for it. Which is all that matters! I may be alittle more than you guys, but I've spent somewhere around 7000 during the move between a nice bed, all new furnature, rent payments (for in between months), and just all the small things that go into living. A trip to any store ends up costing about 100 just for small things (since i literally owned nothing). Whatever you are budgeting... add a grand to it. You'll thank me later.
  15. I guess when comparing Tennessee to Texas you would feel like you get a winter! I have to say I think you need to move alittle more north to get the full effect I'm moving from Maryland to Pennsylvania, not a big switch.
  16. That was a more elequent way of expressing my sentiments
  17. I personally use a credit card for nearly everything and pay it off in full each month. I'm not sure what your situation is (international student..?), but there's nothing more important than opening up a credit card and starting a credit history for yourself. I personally have two. A visa through bank of america and an American Express Blue card. I tend to use the Blue for online purchases (since AmEx has great customer support and if someone tries to screw you, they screw them back for you) and the visa for local things. One day it will matter what bank you choose, but when you have as little money as we do... it's not a big deal. If you have a larger account balance, you can throw your weight around and try to get larger loans with lower interest rates etc... but that's not today!
  18. Anyway the idea is for it to be ambiguous. The limiting case as you put it is not in the interval. As x approaches zero the first function will still be bigger all the way until x =0. Since they want you to be in that interval, a gre strategy to employ without knowing my trick is to simply plug in a number. As someone has mentioned this does not test mathematical ability persay but more critical reasoning within the context of math.' class="bbc_url">@I'm on my iPad so this is the only way I've found to respond using it.... 19. Bank of America does not have fees if you have a direct deposit of X amount of money attached to the account I believe. CITI just recently was hacked and the hackers stole 2 million dollars from people with credit cards with CITI.... I personally wouldn't go there.
  20. I even understand the thought process. I had a parent who pushed me to go to the major they wanted and walk on the path they wanted for me. Midway through sophmore year I realized how much I hated it (which clearly the poster has already done), and what did I do? I swtiched. Was my dad pissed? Yes. Did he get over it? Yes. Is he still a dick about it? Yes. But I'm happier and that's what matters.
  21. To be honest, just how you are writing on this post and how you describe yoruself, as the other guy said, you sound stuck up. No one wants to work with someone who's stuck up, is a summary of what the other guy said. And this is true. You gave them yoru resume right? They read it. You don't need to go over points on it you want to drive home. If anything, on these interviews you should ask questions about the interviewer. Interact with them. Be interested in THEM. They are hiring you to take over something they're doing. They want to know their students will be in good hands with someone who cares about them. If you aren't showing any interest in the class and what kind of students... etc, why would they want you? That's more a general advice: always show an interest in your interviewer and show you've done some research. Especially in science, it's good to know the interviewers research so you can ask them about it. I'm sure there's an analogous thing you can do.
  22. I disagree. What if you don't get in anywhere? You may find this is a great job for you and want to stay. Do you think for a second that they wouldn't fire you because you commited for X amount of time when budget cuts come along? I find it ridiculous to look out for a company or corporation or anyone else really over yourself in an economy like it is today. There's not tons of options even for us capable, degree'd individuals. My girlfriend will be attending Upenn in the fall for a bio PHD but couldn't get a job in january of this year. She was only looking for a normal job (non science), but the nicer places she could work (think restaurants) asked her that same question, and she was honest. So instead of working somewhere for 8+ months (totally respectable amount of time at our age) and making well needed money, she couldn't get those jobs, and had to wait till summer to get a short term job at a book store The point is these people don't care about you. Look out for number one, you don't owe these people anything.
  23. I've seen several of your posts on here... and I understand you may have been influenced by your mom for undergrad but... why are you still doing everything she says like you're a hcild?
  24. I think you're alittle late because the summer is half over. Most programs would have started early june.
  25. I'm curious if the cost of dry erase markers and a white board is really less to than the cost of 99 cent paper pads and penils... Anyone do a detailed analysis on this? I ask because I like to do alot of written problems and I'm not sure the best way to go about it... On the one hand, a mounted dry erase board would be great practice for writing on a chalk board. On the other... you have to stand to do your work.
