  1. Both of my acceptances were posted online (website), and then a few days later I got confirmations via post. I haven't received an email yet from either program.
  2. If you lie about the relationship or you try to cover it up, then when people finally do find out about it, they will be more suspicious because you misled them. They will wonder why you had to hide it if you weren't doing anything wrong (and no amount of explaining will convince them otherwise). If everything is on the up and up, then it is in your best interest not to hide it regardless of what they will think. The consequences will be much worse if you try to cover it up and fail to do so.
  3. I'm applying for both PhD and MA programs straight out of undergrad. I think it is pretty normal, depending on what discipline you are in.
  4. Full time student and mom. Part time, I work as a Peer Tutor for History, Sociology, and Anthropology at my undergrad institution.
  5. As the title implies, I'm curious about my fellow MLIS applicants. What sort of library do you want to work in? What is your dream job, or anything else you think relevant to the topic. I posted in the other thread that I'm interested in becoming a School Library Media Specialist, failing that maybe a Youth Services librarian in a public library. I want to hear about the rest of you!
  6. Adcom Member #1: Meh, she isn't published and we have a ton of better applicants that didn't go to a second rate state school. Adcom Member #2: Great GPA, she has a good fit with our program, and she's gotten several academic awards. Adcom Member #1: Did you see her GRE? Epic fail. Adcom Member #2: Yes, her GRE did sort of suck but did you see those LOR? She's like the queen of the department. Adcom Member #1: Big fish, small pond. Adcom Member #2: I think we should let her in, give her full funding, and a stipend! Adcom Member #1: Fine, she can come, but no money. Adcom Member #2: I'll thumb wrestle you for it... ... and thus my fate is decided by the strength of my POI's thumb.
  7. I will be tutoring. I don't usually work on Mondays, but I have one student with a paper on Machiavelli due on Wednesday so I changed my schedule to work on Monday rather than Friday. Exciting, isn't it?
  8. Got accepted at Rutgers today via the website. Waiting on some sort of official correspondence, though!
  9. I've only heard back from San Jose State - my safety school. The only requirement there is a certain GPA, so I knew I'd get in. I'm waiting for Rutgers, I want to go there. When I applied to MLIS programs, I wasn't sure what kind of Librarian I would want to be, now that I have done my homework, I think I'd like to go the School Library Media route. Unfortunately, I don't expect to hear back from any of my other schools until mid-March, even the two History PhD programs I applied to. Rutgers has an awesome SLMS program, so I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear something.
  10. I think that sometimes the waiting is worse than the actual rejection. If you consider it that way, then you are being merciful when you post the results. You have to remember that you aren't the one rejecting the students, the schools are, and the others will find out sooner or later anyway so you might as well go ahead and put them out of their misery.
  11. Best Case: I get into a history program with full funding, I don't freak out about the work load and dissertation and I make it through to the end. I find a job teaching at a small institution or a community college. Worst Case: Only get accepted to one MLIS program and go into debt in order to get the degree (because these programs are rarely funded well). Upon graduation, not being able to find a desirable job in a school library, and being forced into a low paying full time job that I could have gotten without the degree, only with buckets of grad school debt to pay off.
  12. Do they offer much in the way of funding for students? How competitive are the admissions to the program? I've visited the campus and met with some of the staff and I really loved it. It is my first choice program/school provided I get funding of some sort (which is my fear because tuition there is so high).
  13. I started going to the gym and I picked up a job as a tutor at my undergrad. I really need to be working on my honors thesis, but I can't bring myself to do it. I'm not usually a last minute type of person, and my course load is light this semester. I've taken courses straight through undergrad, summer, winter session, you name it. Now I'm at the home stretch and I just can't bring myself to do it anymore.
  14. Bumping this. Has anyone else applied to Drew University's History and Culture program? Are there any current students of this program still lurking around? If so I'd like to get in touch, as I have a few questions about it.
  15. I want to do a history PhD, my plan B is a master of Library and Information Science. I don't know if you have a MA degree yet, but if you don't have one, you might seriously want to consider applying for at least one program for the Fall. You never know what connections you might make or what experiences you may have. One of my LOR writers told me that the competition is really stiff in this economy for PhD slots, and that if I didn't get in straight out of undergrad to apply again after a Masters. She said that often they will take people with the MA over someone without if they have similar stats/LOR/SOI, etc. Another idea would be to find an internship or a temp position in your field and work on building your CV for next application season. Good luck!
  16. Yes, I feel like everything I'm doing is sort of a waste of time because it isn't part of my grad program. I'm actually to the point where I'm annoyed at what I see as pointless assignments and I feel like I just want to get on with it already. I was chalking this up to just being annoyed in general about waiting on grad accept/rejects and high stress. If it is senioritis, then I hope that when I enter a grad program that my drive and motivation comes back!
  17. No, although I might eventually after the masters. Where did you apply, and what do you plan to do with the degree?
