  1. I haven't been given that information. There was like a weird teleconference information type call where someone spoke about media right around the announcement but it wasn't 'training'. And other than my school paper, no one has ever interviewed me. I mean, we're not Trudeaus. Those guys get media training. There are like 4 of them. You do get a little package in the mail later on in the summer/fall with a star trek like V pin, pen and USB with Vanier on it. I thought that was really sweet but will wear that Pin nowhere. I mean...
  2. I think this is an important point. I think people drag out the dissertation forever, thinking it needs to be more important than it is. It is just one part of your PhD. Yes it should be good quality but I don't think page length says anything about quality whatsoever. Best advice to me was something similar, get your PhD and go do something far more important with your life. That has really helped me put things in perspective. Also I think PhD programs vary as much as dissertations and I don't think you can speak to quality without knowing more about each program.
  3. I haven't heard anything about this public relations training, and I won last year. Your school will process most of the stuff for you. You will wait a long time for an official announcement. I believe it was October last year until we could make it public. After the award comes you don't hear much.
  4. I got a Vanier and was flat turned down for SSHRC. These are odd sometimes. Hang in there.
  5. Nope. Same envelope for everything.
  6. Congratulations! You just have to accept it under your student centre account. They handle everything from there and will be in touch if anything else is required. Also probably best to keep full names off the site. And emails. If there's someone here who can remove the full emails from the previous messages, we can avoid making their lives complicated with a million spam emails. Remember these forums are public.
  7. Ha. That was me last year. My study review was a mess. Poor students. My email came just after 12:30 on the 31 last year. Hopefully it's today! Hopefully soon!
  8. Awwww I can completely relate. I have no memory of a final tutorial I ran on this date last year. I remember just shaking and trying to get through it. I got back to my desk and a friend was there when the email came. I made her stand next to me. Poor thing. I didn't want to look alone. It's just so stressful. That note from a professor was completely thoughtful and so true. It's so easy to get caught up in funding = worth nonsense but we know it's not true. I really hope you find out today because at least then you'll sleep.
  9. Good luck everyone. You'll just get an email around noon on the day of the announcement saying there's been a decision reached. Then you click into research net, and you click on "results" and there it is. You'll get your score and your placement and I think mine came in 2 different letters. And try to keep in mind that that's out of the entire country. High or low, you did a great job getting that far. This time last year I was not sleeping or eating. So try to do both. All the best!
  10. Hi everyone, I just wanted to tell you that at this time last year I was a bit of a mess, and it really only got worse as it went along. The week of the results being issued was one of the worst. I actually had to host a study review tutorial during the hour I knew that the results were likely to come. I just wanted to know, one way or another. So just a note to say hang in there. I wish you the very best of luck and I hope that you find yourself frantically refreshing this page the way I did last year for news on the announcement date. I also hope its good news. Congrats on the nominations. Just making it out of your school and to the national competition is huge.
  11. Good luck everyone. I found this forum really helpful during the process last year.

Hey Kimchipapa, just sent you a message!
  13. So many of their decisions are made because of funding. It's not you! So glad they overturned it and all the very best in your studies this fall. Congratulations on the money and the admission. Well done.
  14. It depends on the committee.
  15. A friend of mine contacted programs last year with simple emails saying basically that they understand there's limited funding for graduate students, would they reconsider the application now that they know you secured CGS. I don't know if contacting schools you haven't applied to would work for you, but try doing that too. Someone I know got SSHRC but didn't bother to apply to PhDs. When he got it he contacted 3 schools and they admitted him right away. He chose the best and went from there. Good luck. What mixed emotions you must be feeling right now. What a great nod of support to your research, but frustration at what is clearly an odd admissions process.
