  1. Staying in Europe isn't all that bad...sounds pretty enticing actually!
  2. I think my parents would be really pleased if I told them that we're expecting... That would make a really good gift for them. Alas, we aren't quite there yet.
  3. If you haven't gotten any research experience yet, how were you able to ascertain that PhD is what you'd like to do? And would you be able to convey that in a compelling way (sell it to the admissions committee). Also, I'm curious... what did you write about in your statement of purpose then?
  4. Another "benefit" of being unemployed: no need to be concerned with leaking information that may potentially compromise reputation, relationships, and employment status.
  5. wow. know the writer of the blog/owner of the website... went to high school with her... this is like motivation/fuel for me.
  6. Love the tiny violins!! I can hear them from here!!
  7. Greatest...after Drew Brees? What was the deal between him and Bridget Moynihan (sp)? Did he just serve as a "donor," or is he paying child support too?
  8. I thought Harvard Kennedy School was referred to as "KSG" rather than "HKS" - HKS confuses me and makes me think of Hong Kong.
  9. I like how you refer to him with such affection: "Tommy." To the rest of us, he is just Tom. Or Mr. Brady. To his parents, he is probably Thomas. Or Thomas Edward Patrick - if he's in trouble.
  10. The spreadsheet looks good. I think the only thing I would add is that after all the math and analysis are done and you end up with what appears to be a clear "top" choice, if it doesn't jive with what your gut feeling says, I would be inclined to roll with my gut feeling nonetheless. I guess that's pretty obvious. Sometimes a simple, intuitive gut feeling can be more meaningful and decisive than sophisticated and thoughtful models.
  11. No hard feelings. It's okay - thanks for the D, Fingers. In times like these, everyone's wounded up more tightly usual. If it helps with the stress and anxiety in any way, I'm glad to provide the outlet.
  12. Giselle is that you? How's the baby doing?
  13. Just wondering... what's the difference between COMP eng vs. COMP SCI eng?
  14. Another thing to add is that, generally speaking, people love to talk about themselves. So you can shoot for anything in that "About Yourself" category that spans from professional to personal. I typically try to find something that will get things started (even if I completely don't care about the topic) and build rapport, and then try to steer the conversation towards fulfilling my agenda. So for example, I might strike up a conversation with you about recent political events in Europe or logging and mining techniques which are destroying the environment (neither of which I care about), but as we go along, I'm going to try to steer our discourse toward what I want to know -- in this case, it might be on funding, ideas for research that I can "borrow," employment opportunities, eligible relatives or offsprings that might be looking for dates, etc.
