  1. I (un-)fortunately got into two schools that I fit in perfectly at in terms of my research, that offer solid funding, are in good locations, etc. I'm also relatively unfamiliar with the reputation of Media & Communications programs, so I am having a hell of a time trying to figure out which to choose from. Right now, my decision is between NC State's Comm, Rhet & Digital Media program and Temple's Mass Media & Comm program. Anyone know anything about either school? Anyone have suggestions? Feel free to reply or private message me. I've been asking around, but have gotten like NO advice on this issue.
  2. Just got an acceptance from Utah's Communication program in the mail today. Not sure if anyone else was still waiting to hear from them. Does anyone have an opinion on this program? (Feel free to private message me.) I really liked everything I could find out about it, but a few of the Comm kids at the school I'm doing my MA at seemed to advocate against going there.
  3. Updates on decisions: Scheduled a phone interview with Temple U (Mass Media and Comm) today. Accepted at NCSU two weeks ago. Any thoughts on which of these are better, provided I'm a good fit at both programs? Still waiting to here from UI U-C, UW-Madison (Comm Arts - Rhetoric), UC-Boulder, and U Utah. Anyone know about these? Assuming rejection at NYU. Actual rejections from Indiana U and UNC-Chapel Hill. Also rejected at U Minnesota, OSU, and UC San Diego, but for non-comm programs.
  4. Ah, that makes sense then. I applied to Communication, not Journalism and Mass Communication. For those applying to just 'Communication' at UC-B, decisions should be out by March 15th.
  5. @mrpbn7 Did you apply to the comm program? I emailed the grad secretary after reading your post and she told me that their decisions won't be made and no acceptances will be sent out until mid-march...
  6. @mrpbn7 Thanks for the heads up. And yeah, that answer is helpful, and ideally would be how you land the better jobs (solid research, pubs, networking, etc.). I'm just at a university now that seems to close doors for you, rather than opening them. I'd like to go somewhere that warrants enough respect that hiring committees, journals, etc. will give my work a fair chance before dismissing it (if not give it an unfair chance in my advantage ).
  7. That's good as far as Temple goes. You are probably still in the running there. As far as Indiana, I just happened to email a couple professors right as they were making their final cuts and sending out acceptances, so I was told by someone not on the acceptance committee that I had been cut. If you email them, they should be able to tell you your status. And thanks! I really like NCSU too. My only concern there is job placement. I don't know too much about which Comm degrees are marketable, and I can only find partial info on one year (2007, I believe) of their job placement record. I'd like to have at least a shot at getting a gig at research university with a graduate program.
  8. Hey LaBrunaFurba, Just wanted to let you know that I am pretty sure that Temple hasn't even sent out their first wave of acceptance letters yet. They seem to be having a lot of coordination problems this year, as they've already lost undergrad transcripts I've sent them three times already, and it seems that other people have had similar issues. Hopefully this makes the wait a little bit easier.
  9. Hey Everyone, I was hoping someone a bit more familiar with Comm programs and (perhaps) the job market might be able to help me out and give me some information. After the wave of rejections, I've been accepted to NCSU's Comm, Rhet, and Digital media PhD program. I am getting good vibes from U of Utah's Comm program and from UC-Boulder's Comm program. Also, as far as I know, I am still in the running at Temple (Mass Media and Comm) and U Illinois U-C (Comm). (My explicit rejections were from U Minnesota, Indiana U, and UNC Chapel Hill. I think I have implicit rejections from NYU, and two non-comm programs at UC San Diego and Carnegie Mellon.) Anyhow, NCSU is a perfect fit for me as far as research goes. There are at least 8-10 people there that I could easily work with. However, I can't find much information on their job placement record and am not sure just how reputable they are in the Media and Comm community. If anyone could perhaps give me some info about where the schools I still have a shot at stand as far as getting a tenure-track position (preferably research-based) later on, I would really appreciate it.
  10. @ironicstatement Congrats! That seems like a really cool program and Madison looks beautiful. Thanks for the encouragement, also.
  11. @fanon_fanatic Thanks for the tip. I think I am a really good fit at most of the places I applied to. Although, when I went back to dig deeper into faculty research interests and publication records, I felt I didn't mesh as well at U of Minnesota, UW-Madison, or Carnegie Mellon as I had thought, even though from the program descriptions and course offerings they were ideal.
  12. @fall2012 Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I hope you get some good news soon too. Where have you applied?
