  1. After spending a lot of time reading ACS Journals and taking more graduate classes, I think I know what I am truly interested in. I am interested in pursuing in pursuing research in organic chemistry where I will investigate mechanistic aspects to understand how organic reactions work. Can someone help me out on which schools to apply that have research specifically on this? Thanks.
  2. Did you visit both schools? Did you have the same amount of funding at both schools when cost of living is taken into account?
  3. You said your GRE was 1115, but how is this possible? GREs are in increments of 10s.

  4. Continuing your research is also an option while you reapply. Also I suggest applying more to lower ranked programs with research areas that interest you too.
  5. It is probably prolixity following my every post (including this one) and voting down all of my posts so he can feel better about himself. He might have even created multiple alternative accounts in order to vote my posts down multiple times since each account is only limited to one vote per post and 5 votes per day. He even deleted many of his posts since they were all voted down since he is too embarrass. If I had to guess, he would probably delete this post too since he is too embarrass: If someone cannot access the above post, then it probably means he already deleted it from being embarrass. This is what prolixity wrote in case he deletes it: As you can see, all prolixity does is troll and contributes very little. Good luck with your decision. UNC seems to be the best option for you. Transferring to a PhD program after getting an MS seems like a fantastic idea since an MS can be used as a stepping stone to a fully funded PhD program.
  6. Is it possible to pay off your loans before they bill you the first payment?
  7. Are you applying to schools that will require the Chemistry GRE? If not, then try to get more research experience instead of wasting time to prepare for the Chemistry GRE.
  8. Also where do you get these random numbers from? I'm talking about "5 times more stringent" and "98% chance of getting admitted." One weakness in your application could be your missing Chemistry GRE score. Even though some schools don't require the Chemistry GRE, skipping the Chemistry GRE may put you at a disadvantage. Do you already have a B.S. and an M.S.?
  9. In the other threads you have posted, you have gotten 1 rejection and all wait lists. Are you certain you will not get off of those wait lists and will need to apply a 2nd time? Some people may get off of wait lists like in June and in some cases a few weeks before classes start at said schools.
  10. What does the $16,000 figure mean in the UNC one? Is that the amount of money you would have to pay out of pocket? Is taking a gap year, retaking tests, and reapplying a viable option for you? What if you applied to more safety schools that had full funding once you get accepted?
  11. Paying is manageable if you can afford it but loaning $32,000 for a MA seems like a bad decision. Are you paying out of pocket or loaning?
  12. Does 1:5 mean out of every 5 MS student, only 1 gets the upgrade? When you said 70% assistantship, 30% fee waiver, does this mean that you have a 100% chance of some kind of funding or are these % separate from each other and you have a 21% chance of getting both?
  13. Apply to PhD and MS programs. If you get accepted to the PhD, then go to the PhD. If you get rejected from the PhD, but get accepted to the MS, then go to the MS, get a high GPA, use the MS as a leverage to get into the PhD Program.
  14. What is an example of a PhD Program that does not give diagnostic exams?
  15. All PhD Chemistry Programs give diagnostic exams at the beginning of the year.
  16. It cuts the price of the GRE in half.
  17. Go to the one that has more funding and benefits after TCOA is factored in.
  18. Regarding the GRE reduction, you can only qualify for a GRE fee reduction once in your lifetime, right? Or can you qualify once for being a college senior / graduate and once as an unemployed person (for a total of 2 times in your life)? Thanks, Taylor.
  19. So is it possible to register to take the GRE on like the last week of July and on the first week of August?
  20. You can only qualify for a GRE fee reduction once in your lifetime, right? Or can you qualify once for being a college senior / graduate and once as an unemployed person?
  21. What does UTSW stand for and have you visited both of them yet? Compare and contrast your funding options.
  22. You should work to make money to pay off all of your undergraduate student debt as well as study for your diagnostic exams.
  23. My friend had the same situation. I told him not to apply.
