  1. If you got accepted into PhD programs with funding, FAFSA isn't really required but it is always good to have a back up.
  2. Organic Chemistry by Jonathan Clayden, Nick Greeves, Stuart Warren, and Peter Wothers is a very good Organic Chemistry textbook.
  3. Joint PhD / JD programs would be an excellent choice for your situation.
  4. You should visit both schools so you can make an informed and sound decision.
  5. You don't have to waste your time apologizing to Prolixity. Prolixity has trolled me as well as others several times. Prolixity also sometimes has inappropriate tones when people ask him questions or respond to his questions.
  6. Does "DWIC" mean "Did well in class"? Also if they ask for 3 letters of recommendation, do people normally get 2 letters of recommendation from two professors whom they got an A in the class and 1 from a research advisor? I know some programs that don't give weight to any letters of recommendation that don't comment on the student's research potential. Does the average applicant who is applying to top programs actually get 3 letters of recommendation from 3 different research advisors?
  7. What exactly does "application season" mean? If I am applying in Fall 2011 for enrollment in Fall 2012, is my "application season" Fall 2011 or is it Fall 2012?
  8. I know a community college professor who went to a very poor and under-performing high school, went to community college, went to a state university for a B.S., and got an M.S. at Yale University. Getting a graduate degree at a top university is possible even if you started out from community college.
  9. What school and program are you attending? Call the program and ask them how much funding you will receive.
  10. Apply to external fellowships to see if you would get any.
  11. What made the Grad Cafe PhD Chemistry application bunch in 2011 different from the groups in 2009 and 2010? What does "R1" mean?
  12. If you could recommend 1 single Biochemistry book and 1 single Physical chemistry book in order to prepare for the GRE, what two books would those be? I also have a question on the timing of taking the GRE Chemistry test. If I plan on graduating Spring 2012 and applying to PhD Chemistry programs in Fall 2011 for enrollment in Fall 2012 and the Chemistry GRE is only offered in October, November, and April and I start the inorganic chemistry sequence in Fall 2011 and Winter 2012, how should I study for the inorganic question of the Chemistry GRE? Should I just start self-studying in the summer and take the Chemistry GRE in October 2011?
  13. Are you in a Master's program or a PhD program? If you are in a PhD program and it is funded, there isn't any negative effects of dropping out since you are not wasting any money. Roughly 50% of students who enter a PhD program never finish the PhD program. One reason is because they found something better to do. If you feel like dropping out of your PhD program and you found something else better to do, then there isn't really any shame in leaving the program.
  14. On a given academic year on average, does anyone know what percent of PhD students in USA are first generation college students and what percent of PhD students are first generation PhD students?
  15. When you get the TA / RA stipend and fellowships, do you have to pay tax on those? Let's say you have left over money from those financial sources, are you able to use the extra money to pay off your undergraduate student loan debt?
  16. What university is this? Also did they say they would give you more funding if you performed well during your 1st year?
  17. As of right now, UCM isn't ranked in Chemistry PhD since UCM opened in 2005. There is no good or bad reputation that has developed for UCM. What about old PhD Chemistry Programs that have been there for a while like the PhD Chemistry Program at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA? UoP is unranked for PhD Chemistry by the NRC. If I look one of the professor's research, should I still apply?
  18. What school rejected you? Well here's the thing. In order for you to get accepted to the program, you must receive approval from: 1. the Bioengineering Department 2. the dean of the Graduate Division Here is what I speculate might have happened: The Bioengineering Department could have approved your application because you had recommendation from the professor within the program and had a lot publications and research, but the dean of the Graduate Division rejected the application since the Graduate Division probably has a minimum GPA threshold of 3.00. What you could do is retake some classes or take more classes to zero out your GPA to a 3.00 and then reapply.
  19. Ask them if they will reimburse your travel expenses for visiting them.
  20. If this is the 2012 edition, I am confused as to why they say 2010 when I go to this: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/chemistry-rankings Are there any other ranking programs besides NRC on phds.org and US News and World Report?
  21. What GPA would you need to not get your admission offer rescinded? Would it be a 3.00 GPA?
