They sent me an email inviting me for an interview over a week ago, with a promise of a date for the interview the begining of this week. Then they sent another one saying that they would select the date in the next week. I'm suddenly not so impressed with their organizational skills...

Don't do Acer, check out ASUS Eee PC instead. Great reviews on their netbooks. I bought one for under $400 from amazon and it has been amazing. If you are only using it for writing papers, web stuff, and nothing needing major computing power, this is the way to go. That way, you can take more time deciding what you do want, before laying down a couple grand on a mac (sigh. I wish I could afford a mac, but it's not in the cards right now. :-) )

All good ideas. I called the prof in charge of PhD admissions for the program, and left voice mail (gag I know). I said something about a conflict and being very interested in both programs and being confused since April 1 is not one of the last two Fridays in March. Hopefully she calls back tomorrow.

HELP! I have been invited to two interviews on the same day - to my tied for first choice programs! They are within driving distance of eachother. Do you think one would let me interview a day early?

It appears that they will both be scheduled for April 1st. I'm trying to not freak out...

I posted this in interviews, but I'd appreciate as much input as possible, since I have not been admitted to either, and I don't want to offend either program. Thoughts?

You should definitely go, but you shouldn't feel pressured to drink. What I drink when I go out and am not drinking alcohol, but want to blend in with those who are, I drink tonic and lime. It looks like a gin and tonic or vodka tonic, but no alcohol. It basically tastes like 7UP or Sprite, but way less syrupy sweet. Just a thought.

My top two programs invited me for interviews this week. School A invited me on Tuesday, asking to reply to the email if I was interested in partaking in the interview process, and to say "We are planning to schedule an interview within the month of March. In view of this, we would like for you to keep the last two Fridays of March open as it might fall on any of those days. We will be contacting you at the beginning of next week to give you the actual date." I replied, very politely, and indicated that I would appreciate knowing as soon as possible which Friday it will be, as I will need to book a flight and rent a car. On Friday, School B invited me to interview as well, with a firm date of Friday, April 1, and a tentative itinerary of events for the day. It was made very clear that this is the only day for an on campus interview, and that the only other option would be a phone interview. I would prefer to visit in person, obviously, in order to get a feel for the department, professors, current grad students, etc. In regards to school A, the last two Fridays of March are the 18th (School A is on Spring Break that week) and the 25th (smack in the middle of a major national conference related to the field). What are the chances that they meant to include April 1 as one of the "last two Fridays of March", since the rest of the week is in March? I cannot stress how much I really want to be able to attend both interview visits in person, and how much I don't want to offend either program by making them think I'd rather visit a different school other than theirs should they fall on the same day. Any thoughts on how to handle it if school A did in fact mean April 1 as one of the last 2 Fridays of March?

true. I guess I see it more as an "it can't hurt you" kind of thing, but it shouldn't necesarily be seen as an automatic leg up.

I have friends who work for NASA, and friends who worked for NASA. With the way they keep doing reductions, I think your funding would be more secure with the Navy. Just my opinion...

I am fairly certain that all programs value diversity, yet attempt to admit the highest quality candidates, regardless of gender, race, orientation, national origin, creed, etc.

student affairs, yes. But I know professors and admissions committees frequent this site, so I am reluctant to say where I've applied. :-)
