Big Move to Grad School: Exciting or Depressing to Move Long Distances?
CSC replied to switch's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I have no car or furniture so moving is just getting on a plane with my computer and a bag of clothes. But I was just thinking how much I would love the excuse to make the drive from California to Florida. -
[PhD, CS] UC Santa Barbara vs Ohio State University
CSC replied to anōnumos's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Assuming everything else is equal, UCSB no question. UCSB is a top notch program in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. Ohio is good too, but do you really want to live in Ohio? Plus, if you are doing CS you really want to be in California. -

Many masters dont offer funding, so waiting a year wouldnt necessarily help your chances receiving it. Could you work while attending the program or burn through it in a year? If youre interested in a PhD, then you could apply next year for those programs which offer more funding. Think about what you would do next year, if you decline, and if that would actually improve your chances. If your determined to go to grad school sometimes you will have to pay.

As another former Peace Corpse volunteer, I have to agree. I also think its better to do PC and then get a MS/MA instead of doing the Masters International program. FYI, it often takes nine months to a year from when you apply to when you depart for PC. So apply now.

Dear adcom, please offer me funding.

UBC is a great school. BC is the nicest part of Canada IMHO and very different than the east. As far as cities go, Id take Vancouver over Boston any day. But it really depends on your personal preferences. Just give them all a fair look before making your decision.

Accept dream program without first year funding or decline/defer and apply to more programs? On a whim, I applied to two PhD programs after completing only the first quarter of my masters. I did get accepted to my dream program but without first year funding. While I could hopefully secure funding in the subsequent years, there is no guarantee. Its out-of-state so first year tuition alone would cost me ~$14k to attend just part time. And if I didnt receive tuition waivers for the following years, I would be looking at another ~$22k. Living expensive would be below the national average. The alternative is to decline, or defer if possible, and apply to more programs after I complete my MS degree shortly. My applications would be also be much more competitive then. There are several international programs I could apply to over the summer before starting next years round of domestic apps. Im leaning towards the latter option but would appreciate any thoughts, comments, or suggestions.

As one of the 40 million people living in California, do not worry about coming here. If radiation were an issue, we would all be fleeing right now. Don't pass up an offer from one of the best schools in the world.

CRC87 I love your tagline. I just reread Waiting for Godot while awaiting decisions. Its very appropriate and helped me cope. "I can't go on like this." "That's what you think." Oh, it really is one of my favorites.

PS Your macbook should be able to run windows which can then run ArcGIS, so you might not need anything new. Something to look into.

I have an Eee Top which works great and was cheap. Unless your running massive data sets, standard specs on a new computer should be more than enough. A large monitor is great. Your school will have a GIS lab which you can use, so you dont need to rush out and buy something right away. It could be be good to get out there see what your other computer needs are too. Also, if your running the ESRI student trial version provided by your school some important features will be missing so you will probably be spending a lot of the time in the lab anyway to use their full versions. A portable external hd (like a wd passport) would be useful at some point too for working on projects at different stations without confusing arcmap.
