Gossip Re U Chicago
lyonessrampant replied to limelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't have gossip sadly. They're late notifying this year. If much more time goes by, I'll email my recommenders (who are in the English department) and ask if they know the timeframe for notification. -
asking for feedback
lyonessrampant replied to yank in the M20's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
When I applied a couple of years ago, I applied to UChicago, Northwestern, Princeton, and UIUC. I asked all of them via email for feedback. Only UChicago and Princeton gave me any,but it doesn't hurt to ask at all, and what I did get as feedback was reassuring. I would definitely ask. -

Congrats on the Northwestern acceptance. That's huge! Also, cool interest areas. Late medieval female mystic writing and hagiography are my secondary interests Good luck on your remaining apps, though with Northwestern in the bag, you hardly need it! -

Aw Cyborg that's so sweet Thanks! Still no news. Sigh. As for my username it isn't academic or anything. It's from my favorite YA lit series when I was kid. . this girl trades places with her twin and poses as a boy to become a knight. Yeah, it's awesome, and I've always liked lionesses. Hope good news comes your way soon! -

So this is crazy, right? I shouldn't call and ask Duke what the process is, right? I'm crawling out of my skin so I question all decisions at this point. . .Would you all advise I NOT call? -

Haven't heard anything either. . .in spite of obsessive refreshing of my Duke Apply Yourself page and email. Do you think they just haven't gotten to us in the alphabet yet? My name starts with T. . . I expect not to be admitted, but this lingering sparks tiny bits of hope that are hard to suppress Wow, I'm going to be SO much more productive when this process is over. I spend most of my work day here or staring at my email. Good thing I have a supportive boss. . . -

I don't think that interview is for English. I think it is for Lit. I may be wrong, but historically, English doesn't do interviews at Duke. -

I think the word congratulations should be banned in all school correspondences and websites where one might find out about status UNLESS in referrence to admission. I keep neurotically refreshing my applyyourself page and the first word is "Congratulations!" in the link to check application status. . .but it is in reference to me having successfully submitted my application. Ye gads! -

Thanks for the clarification. Better luck on your other applications emichelle. Sending happy acceptance thoughts your way! I guess I'll just keep staring at the page and see if it tells me anything. . . -

I didn't mean to sound snarky at all. I agree that's a big teaching burden. I'm just saying I'll be exploited if that's what I have to do Hopefully, we'll all get offers with generous funding. That would be excellent. I would like to say that it makes me sick that the hard sciences get $30K stipends routinely. GRRRRR. . . .. Also love Tybalt -

Ah! So up until I tried today, I haven't been able to access my apply yourself page. . .it gave me some error message. Now I can, but it doesn't say anything I didn't get an email from Duke. . .is this even the website where you got your decision (if you have one)? -

lyonessrampant replied to lyonessrampant's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't have details about the funding. I have friends who do a 2/2 load in Ph.D. programs now. I'd rather not, but if that's the only offer I get, I'll take it. If the choice is between potential exploitation and no Ph.D., I'll go with exploitation. I think that is how CUNY survives, no? They give tiny stipends, especially for NYC, and require a lot of teaching. -

Oh please don't get me wrong! I think Kansas is a great school. I'm just a mountain girl and go a little crazy out in the flat land! I study early modern poetry and critical theory. I am especially interested in poetry from about 1590-1620 (Spenser, Sidney, Donne, Herbert, etc) and my theory interests lie in psychoanalysis, structuralism/poststructuralism, and affect theory. I have an MA from UChicago where my GPA was 3.9. I got a 680 on the subject test and my GRE scores were 700 V, 650 Q, and 6 AW. If you have other questions, let me know. Best of luck!
