  1. Cyborg, I admire your level of obsession Luck! Luck! Luck!
  2. Osodulce, I found/find myself in a similar situation. Obviously, I'm very grateful to have been admitted and especially with funding, but to be honest, KU is the bottom of my list. I applied because my partner's aunt and uncle live in Lawrence. . .Anyway, I'll basically go anywhere else I've applied to that gives me a funded offer. That said, I emailed back right away and said thank you and that I was excited (which is true), but I think I'll probably not contact them a whole lot more until I hear back from some more schools. I think it would be appropriate to reply to the email and thank them for the offer and say you look forward to hearing more information from them. I wouldn't close doors at this point, and the email they sent me suggested they expect this is how we will handle the situation. It said they knew I am probably waiting on other departments and that there was no rush for me to respond. Their visiting period is March 28-April 1, so there's plenty of time for us all to learn things and then make some decisions before that arrives (either to keep KU in the running or decline an offer). Either way, congrats and best of luck!
  3. Also anxiously awaiting results! As for posting, don't people usually put English for the English program and Literature for the Lit program? It looks like that has been the trend in the past. Sigh. Wishing us all luck!
  4. Mine hasn't. I'm about to the point of contacting them, but if other people also are lacking updates, I guess it just means they're still processing stuff?
  5. The school I was accepted to said in the email that the trip to visit would be at their expense. I would imagine there are limits to that, but I am under the impression that the trip is usually paid for when it is a recruitment weekend.
  6. Just got an email! Visiting weekend is March 28-April 1. I'm waiting on lots of other schools, and while this is pretty far from my top pick, I'm so excited and relieved that I will be going somewhere next year! The email didn't say anything about number admitted or how much the GTA is. Good luck to everyone else who applied!
  7. Perhaps the 10% was a bit hyperbolic, but the reality is that there could be a high chance of not getting admitted in spite of having an interview. We all know what assuming does, no? Call/email and ask, as others have said, and they might also offer to cover more of your travel as well. Congrats again to the OP.
  8. Given it is one of your top choices, this makes the decision more difficult. While I would usually be firmly on the side of visit first, I would play devil's advocate a bit here. . .or at least offer a pragmatic voice in that you should try to find out info on how selective the interview process is. If they take 10% of the interviewed pool, that might tip the CBA to a web interview unless you can do multiple visits while in the States. If they accept most of the people they interview, that might tip the scales were it me, but I'd recommend contacting them, explaining the situation, and seeing how much info you can find out.
  9. AJM, lenz, do you have any info about number interviewed, whether the admitted cohort will come only from the interview pool, etc.? Hope your interviews went well.
  10. I think that we've all spent ENOUGH money to merit the consideration of being notified when we've been rejected from the process. I really appreciate schools who notify accepts and rejects at the same time. Even if a group might be still under consideration, I think that the firm rejects should be notified. We're all (at least I am) so invested in this process that the agonizing wait is . . .well. . agonizing. Tell us when you've decided against us firmly. False hope is so unkind. .. ahem. . .Stanford
  11. YT, don't worry about not getting that email I pasted into an earlier post. I emailed and asked and was sent that in reply; it wasn't a mass email, so I'm sure your app is all in order
  12. Wow! That seems super late. I did apply there and really appreciate you passing on that information. Good luck on your applications!
  13. ecoyle, hope you're right and that I, you, us! still might have a chance. That's ubercool your advisor is friends with Roland. Sigh. I LOVE his work.
  14. Okay, so, I'm definitely a "rip the band-aid off fast" kind of person, so I emailed the graduate secretary whom I have corresponded with previously asking if the admitted cohort would be selected exclusively from the interviewed group so that I might make pragmatic guesses about my chances (given I haven't received an interview invite). She emailed me back and said this: "Currently all applications are under review. We plan to be making decisions by mid-February." This, of course, is not responsive to my question. I think she's probably not supposed to say? Anyway, I would still guess it isn't a good sign to not have been contacted yet. I was trying really hard not to get my hopes up and of course didn't expect to get in (competition is so fierce!), but good luck to all you who got interviews and know how lucky you are You should say hi to Roland Greene for me when you go tour the campus. That would be sweet.
  15. I'm pretty certain that's the case. Note the Stanford thread, but I emailed the grad secretary with whom I'd corresponded earlier in the season asking if the admits would be selected from the interview pool. I haven't heard back (I'll post if I do), but I think that in itself is a bad sign. I'm resolving myself for rejection. Not even an interview. Sigh. Bad sign
  16. Did it have any information about number invited, whether admits would be determined from the interview pool, etc.? I'm really emotionally invested in this school, and if I can count myself rejected, I'd really like to start working through what that means. Good luck on the interview.
  17. I saw a post from someone who got an interview at Stanford. Anyone want to claim that and/or share any details? It's not like I expected to get in there or anything, but I have a major crush on Roland Greene and would love to know if I can go about beginning my intellectual grieving process given my "Unrequited Love". . .lol. . .nerd jokes
  18. I love travelling too, but I would also advise against this or at least recommend you delay until April 15th, as others have suggested. A Ph.D. (if that's what you're applying for) is a good chunk of your life. If you end up totally hating the city/environment where a school is located, that could really impact your happiness and satisfaction for a long time. Further, and more importantly in my opinion, you miss out on the opportunity to go on campus visits where you can meet the professors and (some) of the cohort you'll be spending a lot of time with. Getting a feel for the department can be really important. People don't usually talk about things like potential schisms between two professors in your area, and if you potentially want to work with both of them and later find you can't due to the internal disivion, that could really affect your research. At campus visits you get a good feel for interpersonal dynamics, departmental attitude, and grad student opportunities. I wouldn't want to miss that.
  19. Once I tore the envelope open, this was also the conclusion I came to.
  20. Well, it sounds like you have lots of interests. I know that a lot of chem (and hard science) programs like lots of research experience, so if you don't get in on this round, why not take a year or two, do some full-time research and narrow your interests and your focus? That way if/when you reapply, you'll be able to present yourself as a more coherent candidate and really rely upon your references to showcase your strengths. No matter what, good luck!
  21. You both nailed it exactly. Thank goodness for grad cafe where I have cohorts who can understand how awful this process is!
  22. I would just like to say that sending a large package from a school that has NOTHING to do with an admissions decision is highly inconsiderate given our (definitely my!) fragile mental state. Thank you for all the info about how cool your school and town are. . .now if I don't get accepted, I'll feel even worse
  23. I am similarly a nervous wreck. . .I'm so desperate that I've taken to surfing fora that have NOTHING to do with my area (early modern poetry, applied to English Ph.D. programs). . .so yeah, this all sucks. Can't wait until it is over (ahem) as long as over means with at least one accepatance for us all!
  24. Yikes! First, congrats on being a victim of your own success! Next, if I were you, I think it is fair to decline the interview for the programs that, well, have an iceberg's chance in hell of being the program you select. That saves them and you time and it lets them talk to potentially a waitlist candidate faster. Good luck and I hope you find the program that suits you the best!
  25. Also getting them. . .they also still look the exact same as they did the first time. . .I know they have a couple letters that they don't list as having, though. It seems odd that they send the exact same thing each time, but whatever I guess.
