  1. Just my luck: I'm on the waitlist at the University of Washington-Seattle. I'll be notified "by April." This is absolute torture.
  2. No problem, and good luck! : )
  3. And don't be intimidated! You're doing a great thing by getting started with this process!
  4. Hi again! I guess this is where it will be a little different for you than it was for me since I had already corresponded with the two POIs. I said something along the lines of "Dear Dr. POI, I will be attending [the conference] next weekend and noticed you will be presenting. Would you be available anytime that weekend to talk [about your research, the admissions process, the department, etc.]?" I suppose you could say the same thing but also include that you're a prospective graduate student who intends to apply this fall. I sent this e-mail to two POIs, and both responded positively!
  5. CUNY people: I don't know how I missed this before, but apparently 23 people enrolled Fall 2013?! http://www.gc.cuny.edu/Page-Elements/Academics-Research-Centers-Initiatives/Doctoral-Programs/Anthropology/Arrivals-and-Departures Isn't that an incredible cohort size, or am I missing something? This changes nothing for me; I still very much desire a CUNY acceptance.
  6. Hi eshaw! I would recommend e-mailing that POI before the conference so s/he isn't taken off guard when approached. I speak from experience: professors I had arranged to speak with at a major conference last fall were happy to chat with me after their talks, but the one I had not contacted (because I didn't know he'd be there) seemed rather inconvenienced by my presence. It wasn't like I expected to talk at length or even one-on-one, but even the simplest chit-chat seemed unwelcome. Needless to say, my desire to work with this person went out the window!
  7. By the way, did any of you actually respond to the waitlist e-mail? I feel kinda awkward having not done so!
  8. Holy UC Irvine! Congrats to everyone with acceptances! And hang in there, everyone else. There are plenty of us still in the dark--myself included!
  9. *crickets* Nothing on my end, aside from UCLA.
  10. That's how I found out. I guess I just assumed alternate = waitlisted...?
  11. Hooray for acceptances! Congrats!!
  12. Yipes! Ugh. Thanks for clarifying it for me, Daisy. I feel so in the dark. hah
  13. Ahh okay, thanks for the info again, aarch!
  14. Congrats! I didn't think I had a shot either, but now this waitlist status has me dealing with the worst anxiety I've had all application season.
  15. Hey Daisy, sorry I forgot to respond! I actually rather not say at this point in the game because it could easily identify me to the admissions committee. Also, if it turns out that I'm waiting for a particular person to decline their acceptance, I don't want them knowing that I'm relying on them. haha Hope you understand!
  16. haha I have an Academia account, but I don't think anyone can find me via Google. Thank goodness for having the same name as performer!
  17. Hey strudelle, I'm applying to SDSU, and I haven't heard anything yet.
  18. Northwestern interview posted....... attn: dear friend, archaeostudent1231!.....
  19. The percentage of time I spend daydreaming about life in graduate school is unhealthy. Teaching, research, coursework, worrying about deadlines... however masochistic that sounds. Ugh, I really want thissss. I'm sure you guys can relate. In any case, tomorrow is Monday! This HAS to be the week the ball starts rolling... right?
  20. It most certainly is! Let's just say... my POI there is one of only two or three people (that I could immediately find, at least) in the US to specialize in my region of interest. What about you? Is this your top choice? I haven't heard back from anywhere else yet, so this waitlist has me especially stressed. haha
  21. Thanks for the info, rkg! It's good to hear that people actually do turn down acceptances there. I have a hunch that the waitlist is made up of people with differing specializations who will have the chance of being admitted if an accepted person with a similar specialization declines. Or something like that. This would be somewhat supported by what Daisy said about the waitlist not being ranked. Ahh... going crazy.
  22. Ahh, I just saw this. Thanks for the info, Daisy!
  23. Hey aarch, Thanks for the information! Do you have any idea how the waitlist works there (e.g., a ranked order, by advisor, etc.)? Five people on the results page have reported being on the waitlist--do you think there are many more? I'm not trying to get my hopes up too much, but I'm just curious. : )
  24. Yup, don't worry! I'm holding out for the archaeology department, not anthropology. : )
  25. Based on the results page, I was expecting something from UCLA this week-ish, and now, here I am. Waitlisted. Right on time! I'm not too discouraged about being waitlisted for my top choice right off the bat. However, I am concerned that there are five different waitlist entries on the results page, given that GradCafe users usually make up only a fraction of any applicant pool. How many people did they admit? How big is the waitlist? Why am I told that I'll hear back in March (as opposed to all the way up until April 15th)? Sigh. Compounded stress. Overall, it looks like we had a pretty decent day today! That is, in acceptances, not in volume of decisions. I can't wait until next week graces us with its presence.
