  1. YESSS. This is what we like to hear! Congrats, Jump!
  2. YES! This! As they say...
  3. Hi everyone, Having been informed that I'm on the waitlist for my top choice program today, I decided to start this thread. We're in for a bumpy ride--as if waiting it out hadn't been stressful enough! It's hard to tell which posts on the results page came from people who were accepted/rejected off the waitlist in previous years unless they've mentioned so in the comments section. Because of this, I decided to summarize the information found on the 2013 waitlist thread: I tried my best to populate the table! Yes, I do have a LOT of time. I guess my point of posting all of this is to show us all that there is hope. 18 of 28 posters who reported decisions on that thread got in off of the waitlist. Clearly we could have some reporting bias going on here, but nevertheless… This is pretty encouraging. Best of luck to everyone! I'm told I'll hear back in March!
  4. Thanks for the information! I didn't realize their break was so long. I take it you aren't the biggest fan? Is there anything else you can tell me about the school or program? Feel free to PM me! I applied to CUNY purely because of research fit (well, and location), and though I was able to correspond with a few professors and a grad student, I feel like a visit would've really enabled me to understand and get to know the school. Unfortunately, I haven't had the monies. Overall, I've felt pretty positively about the program and the faculty.
  5. I don't know if I've come across anyone else applying there, but someone I know was accepted into University of Wyoming's PhD program (archaeology) just a few days ago.
  6. Okay, yeah, me neither. Do you recall if we were given an estimate for decision dates from the school? GradCafe results seems to indicate early February all the way to late March. I would love to make it to NYC to visit, but at this point (post-application, pre-decision), I feel like it'd be awkward timing. Duke peoples, hang in there! <3 <3 <3
  7. And holy cow, there are already four of us waitlisted folk on the results page. Yeep!
  8. GUYS, not all hope is lost. I've just received word that I'm waitlisted at UCLA archaeology (Cotsen). I am BEYOND excited to not have been outright rejected! No word on where I am on the waitlist, just that I'll hear back in March!
  9. "Well, there's always next year [to apply again]." I don't know what compels people to say this, especially when I haven't even heard back from my schools yet. It's been highly discouraging, especially since NO, there ISN'T always next year, because I'm moving on if I don't get in this year. I can't help but feel a sliver of condescension.
  10. Hey everyone, I'm actually an anthropology/archaeology hopeful, but I thought I'd stop by the math/stats board to get some help for my husband. He's a very non-traditional student and will be graduating with a bachelor's in math next December at the age of 28. He's starting to look into graduate programs and is aiming to fulfill all commonly required coursework (e.g., Washington's admission requirements) before he graduates. My question for you: are there any unspoken requirements for admission into MA/PhD programs? Here's where he'll stand by the time he completes his degree: Cumulative GPA: Pretty low from his first round at college over 5 years ago. Will probably end up around 3.15. Last 60 GPA (Includes all math coursework): 3.85-3.90 (based on how he's performed thus far, this should be plausible) Research Experience: 1) Stats-based research with professor, NSF-funded (one semester); 2) Stats-based research with professor (one semester + summer); 3) Research with a professor who specializes in topology (promised for upcoming fall semester) Teaching Experience: Peer leader/workshop instructor for Calculus III (two semesters; this program is funded by an NSF grant that aims to improve minority participation in STEM fields) Publications: Potentially one, second-authored stemming from research with a consistently-published professor (I know, that may not mean much, but publishing is the goal!) Clearly, much of this is still not set in stone, but we both want to make sure he's going to have what it takes to compete with other applicants. Though he's still working on his primary interests, they seem to lean more toward pure math as opposed to applied math. I apologize for any poor wording; my math vocabulary and knowledge of the field is pretty... rudimentary. Thanks in advance, and good luck to all of you on your admission decisions! I have figuratively bitten my nails down to the quick waiting to hear back!
  11. I think a couple of the application decision pages have been burnt into my retinas.
  12. I did my field school at a Mississippian site in southern Illinois a couple summers ago. I've had no interest in pursuing this particular region, but all other field school options were entirely out of my price range. I had plans to excavate elsewhere (funded!) with my professors on three separate occasions, but they all fell through at the last minute. If I don't get into graduate school due to lack of experience, it won't be for lack of trying! I've been out of school for nearly two years but have continued to volunteer at my local natural history museum and have done some unpaid research assistance. I'm presenting a poster at a conference in March!
  13. That's the spirit!
  14. Hi, are we the SAME EXACT PERSON? ugh. I quit my job last year after saving enough money and went back into volunteering and unpaid research assistance for more experience in my intended field (unfortunately paid work is... hard to come by). I tried my best to not reveal to my friends that I was applying to PhD programs this fall, but when you have little else going on, it's hard for others not to find out what you're up to. It's the least of my worries, but I will be so embarrassed if I don't get in anywhere.
  15. Since no one has responded yet, I'll chime in! Someone on another academic forum posted his CV after he had a professional service work on it. It. Was. Awful. The company changed a lot of language that didn't make sense in an academic context. That is, this company was clearly more geared toward making people appealing to hiring managers and the like. They even crafted an incredibly bland and unnecessary objective statement. The formatting was pretty tacky to boot. Personally, I think you can put together a fantastic CV by modeling it after others in your field. Just hop onto academia.edu, find some people you admire, and construct a similar flow and formatting. I also had a CV going for years and completely reconstructed it prior to application season. Also, once upon a time, I was a design student, so I have a lot of graphic design work under my belt. If you (or anyone else out there) wants any help with formatting, font selection, spacing, etc., let me know!
  16. Had any of you CUNY applicants submitted additional materials to the graduate admissions office? The application itself didn't have a place to insert a CV (or writing sample, I think), so I e-mailed mine over to admissions back in November. Someone responded and said it would be included in my "file" but I have no way of seeing that it's accounted for on my application summary. I feel my application depends on these two items. Truly, I'm not as frantic as I may sound, but I have had a rough day. It's nice to talk to you guys since I don't know anyone else going through this process IRL.
  17. I've also applied to CUNY--not a peep.
  18. A number of years ago, my mom got a BLANK fortune. She thought it was hilarious, but I immediately recognized the menacing omen that had been presented to her in cookie form. Years later, she completely fine.
  19. PMing you. Sorry, public interwebs.
  20. Groan, you guys. As I mentioned in another thread, I've just been accepted to present at a conference and wanted to inform grad admissions contacts of this. My first response back was essentially a "don't bother, this won't help your application." Very discouraging. : ( /end vent session
  21. Interesting! Congrats on the wait list! I feel too intimidated to e-mail him today. haha Maybe I'll send him one tomorrow if my status hasn't changed on the app decision page.
  22. Hey Daisy, Did you call the office?
  23. Congrats BTKOU! I noticed they informed you via phone! Who was it that called, if you don't mind me asking?
  24. Hi there! I applied this year. There have already been two acceptances reported on the results page. Congrats to you, out there somewhere! Here're some admissions statistical information: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/progprofile/result.asp?selectmajor=0082 http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/university-of-california-los-angeles-college-of-letters-and-science-program-in-archaeology-000_10037665.aspx
