Fall 2014: Next Steps
Eternal Optimist replied to Katia_chan's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Apart from the things mentioned by you guys, I am trying to learn more about applying for my F1 Visa, paying the SEVIS fee etc. My I20 should be ready in a week's time. I hate this uncertainty. Although I have all the documents ready and I am pretty sure I will clear the VISA interview, there is still this fear in some corner of my mind that keeps peeping out every now and then. Can't wait to get done with all the formalities. -
Since you talked about the financial aspect of it, I want to mention this. As an international student you won't be able to work outside campus right? And are you sure you would find a job on campus? I am sure you would have thought of all this but I just wanted to bring it up because I am an international student myself and I cannot even dream of attending an unfunded program. But if you have enough savings or funds from loans, I would say go with the program you think offers more in terms of your area of specialization.

I should probably post this in funny English stories thread but going to post it here anyway. UFL was the only direct PhD program I wanted to apply to. I sent them all my app materials but the portal wasn't accepting my international credit card and the grad school was not open to options that were feasible for me. So, I told myself that it's a long shot anyways and let it go. Just received an email from them stating I have been placed on the wait list. I cannot stop laughing. I asked the program assistant my position on the wait list and she said at the moment, I am on the lower half. So,chances are very slim. It's still nice to know that my writing was good enough to be placed on the wait list. -

Funny English Stories

He had no knowledge of the subject he taught. He was bad teacher. You would gain nothing out of his classes. I have heard that it's a torture to sit through his classes. -
Funny English Stories
Eternal Optimist replied to engphiledu's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
This is a fantastic idea! Love all the funny English stories here. In my previous university there was this one professor who was pretty pathetic. To this day, I wonder how he ended up completing his MPhil. Thankfully, I never had the misfortune of taking his classes. This is something I heard from one of his students. Some first year student in his class had asked him the difference between sex and gender. His answer was, 'Gender is what you are and Sex is what you enjoy'. -

Hey KyCountry, I am wait listed at Auburn for M.A. as well. Received an email from Dr. Keirstead stating that he would be contacting the wait listed candidates as and when he receives notifications from other applicants around 15th of April. There was no information on my position on the list. I mailed him asking him about my position on the wait list and he is yet to to respond. Did you receive any such information? Or was your email a generic wait list letter too? -

Fall 2015 Applicants
Eternal Optimist replied to tingdeh's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I will be re applying to some universities that I applied to this year because they have either put me on wait list or offered me unfunded offers. Only one university I am applying to requires evaluation of transcripts. I agree, it's quite expensive both evaluation and the whole application process. That's why I want to find a job and save up for next year. As for subject test, it depends. There are several good programs that do not rrequire it. Taking a subject test is gonna be quite time consuming. I am only planning on taking it because there are 3 or 4 schools on my list that absolutely require subject test. Ideally, I would have liked to invest that time in polishing my writing. So, if there are schools that you absolutely want to apply to that require subject test, take it. If not, don't. I am doing it because I don't want that nagging feeling in my head that I could have taken one more test to increase my odds. -

My plan is somewhat similar Wendy! I am applying to 2 more programs. If nothing works out, I am going to take a mini vacation and then come back and find a job. Will definitely re take my GRE, take the subject test and work on my writing. I have already shortlisted universities for next year but I am sure that will change over time. -
