Where are the MA applicants?
Eternal Optimist replied to pure titanium's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I have applied to only M.A. program. Rejections from Montana and Oklahoma. Accepted for an unfunded M.A. at Vermont. Interview with University of Maine and wait listed at the University of West Virginia. -
Fall 2014 applicants??
Eternal Optimist replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hey Everyone, I was accepted to University of Vermont's M.A. program this morning. But no funding as of now. Have a Skype interview with the University of Maine on 5th March. And was rejected by University of Montana. Exciting day, overall. Just wanted to share the news with everyone. 9 more schools to go. Hopefully I get funded somewhere. Thank you for all the wonderful conversations you guys have here. It's a great support in these tough times. -

Eternal Optimist replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
If any of you have applied for the M.A. program at the University of Vermont, you can expect to hear back from the department on Monday. I had mailed the DGS regarding my application and got a response saying that they are finishing up the review this week and would be notifying everyone by Monday. -

I have a feeling that I am going to get couple of unfunded acceptances and that's about it! I was confident that I could get through February with no problem at all. But it's not as easy as I had imagined. And to think that I might have to go through this all over again next year..... could one of you just drive a stake through my heart and put an end to this agony already?! -
Hello, I am an international student applying for funded and PhD programs this year. Would like to ask a few questions about the process of obtaining I 20. For instance, when you are funded by the university (both tuition and living stipend), do you still need to submit bank documents showing enough funds to cover the the expenses of the first year or is the the proof of funding from the department enough? Please share your experiences.

I have applied to 12 schools so far, all Master's. I have a special feeling about 'Purdue'. I think I have a good shot at Vermont and Wyoming. *fingers crossed* -
International Student Funding Question
Eternal Optimist replied to Eternal Optimist's topic in The Bank
Guys, Thanks a lot for the replies. I am so relieved. I am sure my mom's friend encountered a different situation when she sent her kids. Probably their program only funded the tuition fee. Thanks once again for the reassuring replies. -
I am an international student applying to PhD programs in English Literature. All the programs I am applying to are fully funded. One of my mom's friends had informed her that even if you are fully funded you would have to deposit about $25, 000 as collateral in a U.S. bank. My understanding is that in order to obtain I-20 that is important to apply for my Visa, I need to show that I have enough funds to cover my first year expenses. And this can be done by showing proof of funding and some personal funds to cover university fee, part of health insurance etc. Could someone clarify if my understanding is correct or if I need to deposit a huge sum as collateral even if I am funded? All the programs I am applying offer with 100 percent tuition remission and stipend. What would be the point of a fully funded course if I would have to keep $25, 000 locked-in as a collateral? Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

I live in India and my undergrad univ has access to Jstor, thats about it. And thats not helping much. And if I start ordering all these books through international shipment, I will end up spending a LOT which I cannot afford. I guess I would have to make the best of whats available online. -

I am an international student with no access to websites that sell these books. Nor do I know anyone who has access to libraries in the US. I just wanted to know if there was any way I could make up for these shortcomings. Thanks for taking the time to answer. -

Is it necessary to have read works of faculty members that I plan on mentioning on my S.O.Ps? I am unable to find works of all my POIs online and some books are just too expensive. What do you guys suggest? -

Fishbucket I just finished reading all posts in this thread! Wow! Wish I had found you guys earlier. About the no of schools, I dont think I can be sure until I finally apply! But 16 is maximum. Usually, the unlucky numbers like 13 and 8 work wonders for me. -

Hi All, Its such a relief to have stumbled upon this thread. Thanks for all your valuable posts. I am an international student, applying for both Terminal M.A. programs and M.A./PhD track. I am fine with anything as long as it comes with funding. My areas of interest are Renaissance/Early Modern literature(esp plays), Psychonanalysis (Trauma Studies) and cultural studies. I am also interested in folklore studies esp in studying its relation to popular culture and media. Here is my list and apart from few changes now and then, this has been consistent for a while now. Let me know what you guys think.
