Hi all, I just am curious about how many of you out there that only have two offers of admission for PhD programs when you applied to more than 10 programs. This is only 20% accepting rate for me, which is pretty pathetic assuming I wasted lots of money applying. So how many of you are left with only two offers out of over 10 schools that you applied to. Am I the only one that is not competitive enough?

Do i continue emailing or just give up?

2012 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
OldGrad2012 replied to InquilineKea's topic in Biology
I got my first two post interview rejections already. I am expecting my third post interview rejections also. Fortunately, I am accepted to two after the interviews. Unlike @spew, I got accepted at my later 2 interviews and got rejected at my first 2 interviews. I think my attitude was different or I gained more experiences going to the later interviews compare to the first two interviews. It also depends on the schools too I think. So I have a question. If you have not heard of a school that did not interview you by now, does that means that you can assume rejections also? I have not heard from 4 schools, no interviews or anything. -
Thanks, I did apply to UC Irvine, but got rejected along with other UC schools as well. So I think UC schools are better in general as you mentioned it is "classified as a public Ivies".

@new_to_kin That really cool. I admire you for having a family and a house and at the same time, you will start your PhD. May I ask what universities are you going to? I must admire you because with a family and house, how can you support yourself when you start your PhD. It will be very hard financially right?

Hey guys, I need more votes. Please vote as you can cause I need to make a decision soon.

I picked UC Irvine because I like southern cali. However, FSU offered you more money, but UC Irvine offered you health insurance coverage. Irvine has a richer, diverse culture. FSU does not. Both program ranked the same. I do not know anything about FSU and the Florida area. So I guess it is up to you. According to my situation which is the same as you because I have to pick between two schools. Which schools would you pick for me: UCR or WSU?

I got 2 offers out of the 5 interviews that I have attended. All interviews expenses and travel were covered totally by the schools. All were doctoral degree programs. I am wondering if master degree programs get covered too with travel expenses.

I know I have posted this thread already. But I want to gather the vote between UCR and WSU UCR pro: close proximity to bay area( about 5 hours drive) decent weather about same funding close to LA has lots of restaurants also cheaper than SF GF willing to move with me and get jobs there more jobs in the long run full funding cons: Research has few animal models focused on plant systems no football team traffic WSU pro: decent research lots of animal models cheaper than UCR less traffic quiet environment no smog has football team full funding parallel to UCR cons: extreme weather: (heavy snow in winter: hot in summer) too far from bay area ( must fly out) isolated from rest of the world would feel lonely no jobs in the area after graduation GF would not move with me No jobs for GF in business field

I like to start a poll on this topic and have all you guys vote. How do I do that?

Help make my decision (or completely confuse me)!

If your partner is willing to move with you to School A, then you should choose School A as both offer funding. How about weather for both. Are both in cities?- 18 replies

WSU give me a higher funding in the first year though.

But it seem that WSU has a better research program in reproductive biology, DNA repair, and molecular biology dealing with animal models compare to UCR which has more of a plant systems model for their research. My girlfriend does not like the weather there and do not want to move with me. She would rather live in Riverside where she can work. Pullman has no jobs basically for her. So I am torn between too locations. Pullman is cold in winter, but has better research which fit me. Riverside has better weather, but does not have much research that I want. This is a tough choice. The funding are about the same for both, with WSU being hired in the first year though.

I got interview with the School of Molecular Bioscience on March 2. Is that the same program you are interviewing on March 22nd? Yes, the interview is very informal and you just have to tell them about your current research. I like the program a lot, but the weather in the winter is very harsh. I am from Cali. Is this your first choice school. Did you apply to UCR as well. What do you think of the school compare to UCR.

What do you guy think of the weather there? Is it too cold? I am from California so I do not think I can stand the cold. But is it a better school compare to UC Riverside. What do you think?

What if a better offer comes along after the deadline?
OldGrad2012 replied to mresene's topic in Waiting it Out
@mresene I am in that situation as I have accepted an offer early before April 15th, but receive another offer from a school that I believe is better. So what should I do? Is it ok to rescind my acceptance and accept another offer before April 15th. Just want to know please respond- 22 replies

I created a thread to see how many people accepted their first offer early and find out that they like their other offers or school so they withdraw before April 15th and accept the other offer. Please share your thoughts.

I need advice here. So I have been accepted to both schools, Washington State and UCRiverside. I have accepted the offer from UCR already. However, I just got an offer from Washington State (WSU). I think that WSU has more to offer in terms of POI and research. So can I withdraw from UCR before April 15, 2012 and accept WSU offer. Please let me know. Thanks
-
I got accepted to WSU just last Thursday March 8 by a phone call from POI and an acceptance letter on Friday the next day. Now here is the problem that I have. My problem is that I have already accepted my first offer from UCR, and I am considering to attend WSU instead because it is a better program that fits me more. So will it be possible to decline UCR offer after I have accepted it? I will accept WSU offer instead. What do you think? Please give me advise. Thanks
-
I got an interview from WSU on March 2. I have not heard back from them yet.

Does anyone know if UCR is a good school in term of graduate program? I am accepted into UCR with funding. It is my first acceptance. Although I have other interviews at Washington State CMB, Arizona State MCB, and UNLV , and I have not heard from these schools yet. Should I get accepted into one of these graduate programs, I will be force to choose between UCR and which ever else accept me. So I need help in rating the molecular biology graduate program here. I know I will get in at least one more program, so I want to compare based on you guys opinions. Please give me your thoughts if you are in biological science field as to which school is better in biological science concentration molecular cellular biology or genetics and genomics. Ratings UCR vs. WSU UCR vs ASU WSU vs ASU UCR vs UNLV WSU vs UNLV ASU vs UNLV Assuming I will get accepted to all three schools of course, which programs is better: UCR, WSU, ASU, or UNLV ???

Does an interview say that "You are Accepted?"
OldGrad2012 replied to AKAindie's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I was rejected too after what I think was a good interview. But I was accepted at one school after a phone interview only. So you are right, it really depends on the school.- 12 replies

Hi, @ Ebrahim IF Ebrahim accept this offer, can he or she withdraw before April 15, if another offer is better in funding? I asked because I have accepted an offer already and are waiting for other offers as well.
