Azerbaijan. Loved it, but so glad to be home. Peace Corps is definitely something I recommend - gives life a whole new perspective

Thanks! I'm kind of in shock after the past two days... never actually thought I'd have a choice!

The American SIS Fall 2012 Thread

That's awesome- congrats! I'm really jealous, with my lack of funding for the program Was all that info in the acceptance letter? Has anyone one here received a phone call from AU? I missed a call while I was at work, and it seems that the number is from AU-SIS. Just curious as to what it may be about... (they didn't leave a message) ... -
Accepted to LBJ - MGPS, also given in-state tuition and $1000 waiver. Still hard to beat a full ride to Georgetown, but would likely save money living in Austin... I went for the Open House in November and loved it. Gonna be some long talks in our household, I think

Yeah, it's just not going to to cut it. I really liked AU's program, but I'm not paying that much money for it. Kinda puts a damper on the initial "awesome! I got in!" experience. -
Thanks! Good luck! I hope you do too! As you can probably deduce, I'm fairly early in the alphabet Although there doesn't seem to be much rhyme nor reason to these darn adcoms. I hope you get to wake up to awesome news in the morning - feel better!

I know - it's like a teaser... here's a little bit of money to cover our crazy high tuition. Bet you wish you had more. Mwahaha! -
I was sent an email about 4 hours ago, telling me to check the website.

Yeahhh I think I didn't get any funding beyond the $4100 PC Fellowship. Ouch. Oh well - congrats on *your* acceptance and funding! That's exciting -

On that note, I don't feel like I understand the financial aid stuff on the website. I created an account and did everything, but it's showing nothing right now. How is it showing up for those who have gotten funding? -
Ha. About to lose my fiancee to a video game for the next week...

I got my acceptance for SIS-EPGA, although doesn't look like good funding. It's a little confusing, so I'm not entirely sure.

I got my acceptance into the EPGA program I'm not sure about overall financial aid, but I was given an SIS Peace Corps Fellowship, which covers 3 credits tuition remission. I'm pretty excited, although likely won't go unless my financial aid package is better. -
Oh, and apparently there have been two sent out... Guess we may be hearing this week?

Georgetown Global Human Development Program

I don't mind I have about 5 years experience abroad, teaching English. I just got back from doing the Peace Corps (that's included in the 5 years). I have done a lot of volunteer work, including in the countries I lived in. I think it also helps that I speak Spanish, Azerbaijani, and some Turkish (since Gtown requires a foreign language) -
Yikes, here we go.... I'm really lucky, and I think I may be less crazy now that I heard from Georgetown and know I can legitimately go somewhere. The funding thing was stressing me out - I was so scared I'd actually get in places and then not be able to afford to go anywhere!

There's still hope - I got my acceptance with full scholarship today. I am beyond happy/relieved. -
Yeahhh, unfortuntely, MPP programs seem to go with mid-March, so we're just stuck waiting in general! Next week! (I hope)

UVa - Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy
bgreenster replied to JAubrey's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Sooo... I got the email with funding info and I didn't get a very good financial offer. I'm super bummed because UVA has been one of my top choices, and I don't think I can afford it. I don't think I can justify paying out of state with only $5000 per year (and health insurance... which isn't important to me since I'll be married and his company will cover me anyhow). Uber sad face -
University of Maryland (MPP) 2012
bgreenster replied to Crippling Anxiety's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I don't really know what's going on with them. I've gotten nothing online, and nothing in the mail, after that kind of random email two weeks ago. I was told when applying for the fellowship (3 weeks ago) that the admission decision would be made by now, and I "may" know funding at that time. I'm not sure if they're waiting to send me an official admit until after decisions are made on the two fellowships, but the silence is making me insane. -
Georgetown Global Human Development Program
bgreenster replied to piquant777's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Womp womp. Silence doesn't bode well in this case. Ah well, unless I got really good funding, Gtown wasn't so much in the cards. Between tuition and living costs - yikes! Good luck to y'all on the wait list. In terms of number accepted - they are hoping for a class of 20, so they definitely had to accept more than that. I don't know what kind of numbers, though, what with it being a brand new program. I'm curious as to how many applied, then how many made it to the interview round. I'm also curious as to how other interviews went - I thought mine went really well, with her literally saying I was a "perfect fit"... which seems weird to say to someone that they don't intend to accept. I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but the silence is definitely getting in my head. -
2.35 GPA, do I have a chance at an IR/IA MA anywhere?
bgreenster replied to secretshayats's topic in Social Sciences
Obviously, you know that it's something to overcome, but at least you've done a lot to make up for it. I'm mosty going on a hunch, but I'd say you may have a better chance with European schools. I know that when I studied in Spain, grades were regularly much lower than we get in the States. (Our professors thought that a C was a "good" grade... my semester over there hurt my GPA) If you want to stay in the States, though, I'd also go with a lesser known school that has a professor that's into whatever area it is you want to study. Yeah, you won't get the "big name" but you'll still get to learn what you need. I would apply to a few reaches, because you never know, and then make sure you have some others where it won't matter so much. I'm sure with your experience, you have great LOR and can write a killer SOP. I'd recommend starting some classes either online or at a nearby school, preferably retaking one that you didn't do well in back in UG to show that you can. I took an online Micro-econ class (through Berkeley Extension) to overcome an abysmal econ grade from UG. It's definitely worth a shot, and from what I've heard, if you want to go into something like public sector or non-profits, the names aren't as important as private sector... having the knowledge/degree is more important...(but that's what I've *heard* so I can't fully vouch for it!)
