  1. Great idea!
  2. If your professor offered to write your recommendation he might have something insightful to say that the other two from your actual field may not account for. I don't necessarily think the amount of classes you've taken with the professor are the most important thing but how they evaluate your quality of work, character and ability to perform in the setting for which you are applying. If this person thinks they are qualified to comment on this (and they must since they offered to write it) then I would accept unless I had a better idea.
  3. Ray1246 only pointed out the troll... Sheesh. And the other person stating that their friend had heard was the person who said they were aware a "CANADIAN ETA"... Another troll... We're becoming a magnet for them I guess. Guys, I don't think any German ETAs have been awarded yet. Don't panic. And don't give Ray negative-whatever-those-things-are on the side.
  4. No one has been notified for the Netherlands. They're just finalists waiting to hear like you.
  5. I'm right there with you. I am not expecting to hear soon but I feel better knowing the process is still moving. This week feels like someone hit the pause button or something and it's disheartening. They got us all excited and then nothing. Argh!
  6. Woot! Happy to have the company! Crossing fingers for earlier notifications... Can we cut off 10 days for mailing times from Baltic states since it's an email for Fulbright stateside? Not sure, but just a thought.
  7. No, actually it reads like you will only be required to pay in-state tuition (much less than out-of-state, which includes international students) and your assistantship will cover 50% of that in-state tuition. So... you end up paying 50% percent of the in-state tuition for one academic year (two semesters). What you may be seeing if there is a summation of in-state and out-of-state costs is that you are only receiving this benefit for one year of a two year program? I'm not sure since you didn't provide that information.
  8. My program only has four spots but last year only 8 applied, so at most they could only send 8 applications and that's only if they were willing to recommend all of them. Perhaps there's a difference in the way they handle full grant and ETA programs? Because I feel like we've all heard this 1.5-2x the number of spots thing. Or maybe it's just a story that went viral or a big game of telephone... regardless, here's to hoping all of our applications have been shining among our competition! Has anyone else found it hard to study a less popular language? Not many Latvians hanging out around here... And there aren't a lot of quality language resources either.
  9. I agree with Kexin. At this stage I think the rankings our schools gave us are no longer relevant. They would probably only have impacted us in the first round. And that is where I think it impacts those who apply at-large. They don't get the benefit of having their schools rank them and it's basically like a 4th letter of recommendation (but from the institution) I take it. However, once we make it to the next round I've heard we're ranked. So all previous rankings would be discarded for the new one. Who knows. Woooo... let Tuesday begin!
  10. Thank you sooo much! And will do!
  11. Hey all, Just a note about the spreadsheet and maybe a plea for help. If you asked to be added to the spreadsheet by way of posting on the forum, please use the email instead. It is far too difficult to keep track of who has and hasn't been added. In the past I've gone back through and added people who have even just mentioned their status but unfortunately my desire for procrastination is being far outweighed by the need to finish my thesis. Now, if there is another person who like to donate some time to helping me manage the spreadsheet, let me know! Please be decent with spreadsheets! I've already taken four days off from the grad cafe and I plan to not be on here so frequently but I'll keep up the spreadsheet if people keep up the emails. And I probably can't help but check in daily anyways. Good luck to everyone! I hope we hear a lot of great news this week!
  12. Yeah, you don't have to worry about host country time. The US either has or doesn't have the results by now. It seems like most of the emails are coming in the afternoon, right? Or maybe people just have the patience to not check them all day... or busy schedules. Not to mention, I don't think I will be finding out for a month.
  13. Right, ray1246 gave us that info from his FPA. It goes back farther than the two past spreadsheets we have. I've started putting in some of the missing info but it takes time and obviously a lot of the countries aren't being captured by the spreadsheets we have access to.
  14. It's not that Portugal isn't "popular", it's that there are only 5 grants to Portugal compared to 230 total to Germany or however many to the UK. I'm applying to Latvia (4 grants, hopefully!) and haven't seen another applicant on here for there either (but there is another Baltic applicant). We're just applying to small countries with few grants (but also smaller applicant pools).
  15. Unlike Fulbright, I think DAAD requires you to be enrolled at the time of your application (undergrad, grad, phd, or be faculty/researcher-- depending on your desired program). So being 6 years out of undergrad precludes the person from being able to apply unless, like you, they are now in a graduate or PhD program.
  16. The only thing I have heard about this is that DAAD has the potential to be extended for a second year to cover a two-year program. If this is necessary or important to you, it could be a deciding factor.
  17. Bummer... I know it's not the email you wanted but don't lose hope. I spend way to much time reading past year threads and there have been bunches of alternates turned accepted.
  18. Congrats!!!
  19. Never say never. I've been long distance for the last year (different countries) and while it's challenging, it definitely works. The relationship is totally dependent on honesty, trust, and really good communication. But if you're willing to put in the work, I think you could find you'll actually grow closer to your boyfriend.
  20. Unfortunately even I know that refreshing my email multiple times a minute isn't helping me achieve my goals. And yet I do it anyway.
  21. Lol. I never think about the other people that could be looking at this forum. FPAs or Fulbright people especially. We must look super crazy!
  22. I updated this for you. But you can email the address that's listed at the top of the google doc: fulbright2012.2013 at gmail dot com.
  23. I've copied this spreadsheet and added it to the existing 2012-13 workbook on Google Docs. Thanks so much for sharing!
  24. In theory it should be the latter. But you could be like T Pain and get a physical letter first. There's no telling.
  25. I think it's the opposite. It's not official until we get the email from Fulbright. The letters are coming from the Fulbright commissions abroad and are not being recognized without the email as far as I gather.
