Some good ones: The Hours, American Psycho, The Shining, and Children of Men. Bad Life Decisions: The Scarlet Letter, War of the Worlds, Beloved (not a fan of the book either, but still...seriously, Oprah?)

NYU! I finished my MA there this past spring. I'm a medievalist, but harbour a soft spot for Victorian Lit. NYU is pretty strong in Victorian. They have Elaine Freedgood, Mary Poovey, Jeff Spear, and John Maynard (who is also an amazing person). They also just hired Catherine Robson. The Victorian Literature and Culture Journal is also run out of NYU. And, I know this has been mentioned already, but the funding is exceptionally better. I have a friend who received one of the best fellowships at , but she still had to pretty heavy teaching load. (She ultimately chose another program.) At NYU, you have the option of teaching, but I don't believe it's required anymore. Good luck!

High school English probably...but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Hopefully, you'll find out good news about funding soon. This is actually what scares me the most-- getting accepted, but not being able to afford it. I took out loans for my MA and just finished paying them off. I'm NEVER going through that again! -

Sigh...so true. -
Keeping with Southern Lit, I just read Flannery O' Conner's Wise Blood. I highly recommend. Also, Michael Cunningham's Specimen Days. You should read Barry Unsworth's Morality Play if you haven't done so already.

Hi, User_name-- I haven't heard back from WashU, so you're not alone there. -

Congrats! Everyone is hearing such great things! Why must I still be stuck in limbo? -

I've seen results for three of my schools in the past few days-- WUSTL, Indiana, and Purdue. I haven't heard anything, and I'm assuming the worst. 3 down 10 to go. Oh, well. -
Slight UCONN freakout - Application Status: Incomplete
Jbarks replied to Quantumcross's topic in Waiting it Out
They just updated mine. I don't know why they couldn't do it initially. It took all of about two minutes. Oy vey. -
I have a tattoo on the inside of my left wrist; it's a semi colon. I will get another tattoo if I'm accepted. I'm not sure what yet, probably English related though. I had a nose ring for awhile in college. I would consider getting another one.

This definitely makes since. And, really, I don't care what tier/list I'm on as long as they accept me...eventually.

Yes, as long as the English Department has everything I feel okay. The incomplete/complete thing is more of a tedious admin thing. -

After seeing this thread, I checked my application; it says the same thing. However, it also shows that everything has been submitted. A few days before the deadline, I contacted the English Department to ensure they had all of my materials, and they confirmed that they did. It's just curious and disconcerting that my application still reads incomplete. I just contacted the graduate admissions office, so hopefully I'll hear something soon. -

I've given this a lot of thought. I would be completely fine if my very first response was an acceptance (with an awesome funding package) and the other twelve were rejections. Of course, now that I've put that out in the universe, it will be the complete opposite, or I'll just go 0 for 13. -
Songs with great lyrics...Avoid music gods!
Jbarks replied to todamascus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Agreed! Great paper-writing music. I would also like to second Joanna Newsom, Gilllian Welch, and Jenny Lewis. I will then add Chris Pureka (not very well known, but amazing), Cat Power, Patti Smith, and Angus and Julia Stone. -
How are you coping with waiting?

Ha! This gave me an amusing mental image of the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz as they fly through English Departments whilst waving around our application packets and cackling. -

I hope you're right. 13 programs and 0 responses. Sigh... -
The more positive things I hear about the program, the more I want to go. I also like the fact that it's pretty small. I've always felt more at home in smaller departments. TeamCoco-- Did you apply, as well? What is your area of interest?

Thanks. That helps give some perspective. I always forget to check Phds.org.

Hello! So, I know (at least according the results board) that Rochester typically doesn't notify until late February early March. However, since it's my top-top choice, I'm curious as to whether anyone has any information on their stats. How many people typically apply? How many do they accept? I can't find any information anywhere. Also, I'm curious about Auburn...just as a sidenote. Thanks!

Yes, I also like to compare apartment costs to where I'm living now (NYC). I've discovered that in most places I can get a FULL one bedroom, not even a crappy alcove, for less than I'm paying to live in a three shared with two roommates. This concept of space and cheap rent is so foreign to me. -
Anyone want to claim that NYU?
Jbarks replied to 0000000000AAA's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Congrats! NYU is a great program. I did my MA there, but didn't apply for PhD. Also, I agree.
