  1. I did my undergrad in music, and now I'm in a grad program in pathology ;-)

Yes!! Finally, after allll the posts before this, something completely different. More posters like you please!

I completed my BA in English now pursuing MS/PHD in Applied Math/Biostatistics.

TheSquirrel, your advice is invaluable. How exactly did you bring about your other interests in a positive spin? I would greatly appreciate it if you can pm me.

  2. Hi all,

I am in the midst of my Probability Theory course and I bombed my first midterm, as well as 75% of the class. There is too much material to learn for the midterms (4-5 chapters per midterm) and with 1.25 hours per midterm, there isn't enough time to jot everything down. Seems like the whole class is complaining but no one actually confronts the professor about it.

Question is, if I drop this course(W on my transcript) and take it again in the summer, how bad will it be to my future grad applications?

What if I opt for Pass/Fail option? Is that a bad sign?

  3. I applied to 6 graduate schools in the mathematical sciences/statistics, I heard back from them 3 one-by-one at a two-week interval. Then it all stopped in February. I emailed the schools and got my responses back.....immediately. One rejection was within 5 minutes of emailing them, I literally sent the email, than watched a video on Youtube, then went back to check my email and the advisor said " I regret to inform you...blah blah."

In a nutshell- Dedicate half an hour of your day, email everyone or call them.

  4. I hope this isn't too late. I was going to apply for the University of Warwick and Nottingham in Mathematical Biology. However, I emailed some of the advisors/graduate secretaries and told me that my competition will have more classes than I do and a completed degree. ( I'm only 3-4 class away from completing a second bachelors/major). My gpa is kind of horrible and I have no research experience. I really want to go to those schools because the programs are only one year long, much cheaper, and I get to live abroad away from the hustle and bustle of the east coast.

Is anyone in my shoes and applied already? I have a GPA of 3.2 and GRE of 160/Q, 154/V, 4.5 AW.

  5. Hanyuye,

No I don't have an MS yet, and I got a BS in 2011 in applied math. I did go to Columbia for my BS though, and GPA-wise over there, mine isn't too bad.

And Noco7, in theory, SOPHAS seems efficient and helpful. But it's pretty flawed overall, and it takes forever to ensure that everything is submitted/accepted/valid- that's the frustrating part.

SOPHAS lost ALL of my original transcripts at first. And they notified me two days before the first deadline (UCLA, UM). I then had to send it again, and never got reimbursed. $95 down the drain.

  6. Rejected from every school but haven't heard from NCSU yet.

The thing is, my grades suffer because I have too much responsibilities here that I don't deserve or want to have. When I'm independent, my grades, lifestyle exponentially improves ...but you can't write that in a SOP. If you did, I'm sure the reader will get a hmph! out of it. And a with a low GRE q score of 158 (you think I should take it again? I'm really looking at taking GRE math courses because studying on my own has only made me more paranoid with my habits.

If I don't get in this fall, I'm applying for Spring in Applied Math.

Otherwise, awaiting tips on University of Nottingham/Warwick here.
