  1. I received an offer from Emory today it's not my number one, but it comes with guaranteed funding for 5 years, including full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance; plus significant additional funds for travel to conferences and research expenses. This is a good start to my long weekend. I hope everyone keeps hearing positive news!
  2. dm242, why so surprised? The secretary told me by the end of the month. I also heard from my POI about a week ago and she said she had a feeling that we would be chatting again soon. Another prof who's not at Madison told me that she had heard positive things from a few profs there about an acceptance for me, but I sitill have not heard anything official. Come on C&I. The suspense is too much!
  3. I wish there was something to speed the waiting process. I mean, hugs are great, but it would be so cool if someone in this forum had a magic wand that could speed up time or some fairy dust that would blast me into April. Hmm, I wonder what will suffice in the meantime? Maybe chocolate. I could go for some brownies right now
  4. Congrats!!!! I also love your name, by the way. It reminds me of myself and my crazy bachelorette eating habits
  5. I absolutely LOVE this book! Junot Diaz is brilliant. Keeping in the same line -- How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez is wonderful.
  6. I second Gatsby! It's one of my faves and I recently re-read it
  7. I can't say I completely understand this situation, because I'm not in it, but I can certainly empathize with you and try to share some of my thoughts. The terrible thing about the whole process is it creates so much competition, which I can't stand in general. Still, I hope you can find another way to look at the situation, if you are accepted, aside from thinking of yourself as "second best." I don't think that's true at all. I still believe everything is about fit, but say there are only 5 spots and even though 7 phenomenal people apply, the reality is: there are still really only 5 spots. So, it becomes a difficult decision for the adcomm. They know all of the people they make offers to won't accept, because everyone has their number one choice (which may or might not be Stanford for those who were accepted). I wouldn't go through all the reasons why you're on the wait list and not one of the initial offers. However, they didn't reject you, which means that they still want you. And once you're there, working with who you want and doing all sorts of phenomenal work, the wait list won't mean anything.
  8. I'm not going this year, but many of my friends are and I'm super jealous I can't wait to go next year!!
  9. I guess I've been pseudo-lurking on this post. Only not really. I've just been super busy, so when I try to catch up, I'm always so many steps behind that I don't really know what's going on. From what I can gather, it seems that several people have heard wonderful news, which is awesome!! Congrats to all folks who were accepted and waitlisted. In addition, something has to be said for receiving rejection info. I'm not saying these are easy, but it seems like at least knowing might help. On Tuesday evening (2/7) and all day Wednesday (2/8), I had my visit/interview at Emory and it went well. I'll keep you posted on that. My heart is in Madison and I will keep you posted when I hear something. Good luck to everyone.
  10. Congrats!!! I hope that professor is able to get funding for you!! Sounds great
  11. Yeah, after I posted it I thought "wait, is it 'lay' or 'lie'?" and then I said eff it
  12. "I'll stop freaking out when March rolls around!" "Today, I'm confident." "I'll never get in!"
  13. Earlier this week, I opened a fortune cookie and it contained 3 identical fortunes that read, "This week, your lucky number is three." Hmm, I wonder if this means I'll hear some good news on 2/3??? Total grad applicant logic
  14. Day 2: (If our gradschool decision wait was a Stanley Kubrick film this would have flashed across a screen). Am I really gonna acknowledge every single day this month. I guess that's a good thing.
  15. Sleeplessness is back. I'm so excited it's February, but so nervous/anxious!
  16. I love this joke! Reminds me of this one: A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons. "Why?" asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder. "Well, I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up." The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. "Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves." Congrats, HigherLearning!!! I'm so happy for you
  17. I can totally relate to these neurotic ramblings! I know I've said too much when my listener gets that glint in her/his eye letting me know that I've passed the threshold of tolerance. Wildviolet, I partially took your advice and emailed the secretary for my program to ask if apps were being reviewed. She wrote me back and said yes and I should hear by the end of February. Long time to wait, but at least I have some sort of idea now
  18. I also love how it helps me build a different type of relationship with my students. Several youth are reading this novel and it is pretty AMAZING to have talks about literature. The literary nerd in me loves that to pieces!!! This is cool! I teach 6th and 7th grade this year. It's lovely!
