  1. That's unfortunate, but at least they let you know. To an extent, Berkeley has a poor track record funding domestic students as well.
  2. Firebird, that is awesome!! I'm very excited to hear that those are your interests. Studying it from a math literacy perspective is critical. I'm intrigued dm242, I'm glad you've shared!! Good luck to you!! Completely understood - I freak out on a daily basis! I hope we all get in somewhere.
  3. Thanks! My research interests are grounded in social justice - critical literacy, urban schooling, anti-bias/anti-oppressive pedagogy, youth based organizations, and underrepresented student populations. I am primarily interested in researching writing instruction in school and out-of-school contexts in predominately urban settings. Berkeley seems fantastic!! I'm glad that you are applying to GSE, dispositif!
  4. Yes, he would be! I would want to work more closely with Glynda Hull. But of course we would have some opportunities to work with all faculty members outside of whoever our advisors will be. Berkeley is my dream school. Is it yours as well? It would be nice if we are there together; I like your interests.
  5. Someone might call. But what would she say? She shifted the phone uneasily in her hands, while nervously sifting through unspoken thoughts concerning a phone conversation that had yet to take place. Tremors of agitation fluttered beneath her skin in a moment of consternation. "Calm down," she whispered quietly. She understood the apprehension of applying, yet this anxiety precipitated by the impending call was new. How would she avoid merely regurgitating details expressed on paper?
  6. I can't recommend a back up plan for you because I do not know much about your current situation. Although, I think you have to consider all the things you are willing and able to do in order to develop a solid plan. If I don't get accepted, my plan is to continue teaching full-time and make my application stronger for 2013.
  7. Oh no! So, what does that mean?? They won't review your application?
  8. Contact your program and ask if recommenders have an extended deadline. One of my schools had an application deadline of 12/2 and a recommendation deadline of 12/16, but that was not indicated anywhere on the site. I only found out after I started panicking about a late LOR and I contacted my program. I'm sure it will be fine. Good luck
  9. Whoa! That's a lot of applicants. Do you know what the acceptance rate is? I hope you make it
  10. I'm also applying to Berkeley, but to the LLC program within Language, Literacy, Society and Cultural Studies. Good luck to you! And, good luck to everyone!!
  11. I have a similar background. Plus, I agree that it is difficult to develop a theoretical framework without practical experience, specifically in education. Although, I'm sure this is much different for other programs. Which schools are you applying to?
  12. Good question!! Why are GRE score reports $23?? It's such an odd number too.
  13. Probably ... I would check with your program. It shouldn't hurt. Plus, your correspondence will be added to your file, so at least the adcomms will know that you were trying to stay on top of things as much as possible (seeing as how reccs are pretty much out of our hands). I need to listen to that song too!!
  14. Why do they do this?! Here's to promising that when we're all professors someday and students request letters from us, we won't wait until the very last minute. Or, worse yet -- not complete them altogether. This really seems to be the most nerve racking part of the application process.
  15. I think many. There's a whole thread devoted to this in the Applications section and people do not seem pleased. It's really double work. Plus, it seems like we could have infused our personal history within the SOP. It's a UC thing, because I have to do it for both UCs I'm applying to. I also wonder who will read this.
  16. I wonder the same exact thing. The past 4-5 months have been a total blur and it's not over yet.
  17. I was until earlier today. The deadline for Berkeley was Dec 2 and one of my letters was not in. I emailed my program to inquire about what options I would have if my recommender did not submit the letter on time. I received a response indicating that recommenders would have until 12/16. After being on pins and needles for what seemed like forever, I received the notification today that it was submitted. My recommender apologized for the delay and I am grateful that it's finally in, but the LOR process seriously causes so much unnecessary stress. You might want to check with your programs to see if they provide a window for recommenders. I'm sure your person will submit. In the meanwhile, I commiserate with you.
  18. I agree with this. As I continue having anxiety over my small number of schools that I am applying to, only four, I remember what you have said about the odds. If it's not my year, it has nothing to do with how many schools I apply to. On another note, I absolutely love the Literature, Rhetoric and Composition forum. This is one of my favorite hangouts in the gradcafe! Just thought I'd share...
  19. Yeah, I agree with Dharma Bum (love that name, by the way!) and think you should totally let it work in your favor. We all apply to more than one.
  20. Finally, all of my LORs are in!!!
