  1. a Shiner, some cheddar cheese cubes, and I'm set for rejection. I've seen the Family Reunion at the store, but haven't picked one up. Sometimes I just get those "pick four" or six mix and match sets that you can get at HEB or Target and try some of the seasonal brews. Nothing too hopsy or i get a little gurggles going on.
  2. I am almost certain I'm going to get rejected from UT. I applied to two programs, and had nothing but trouble with documents being misplaced in the electronic system. Everything is sorted out now, but I think both the English and Philosophy programs hate me. They both know my name, but not in a good way... My drink of choice is Tito's Vodka, mixed with cranberry, lime if we've got it, and a Shiner. Ah, Texas. How you kill me slowly, in so many ways...
  3. I got rejected from the phil program I wanted to get into the first time around, so I went to a fall back school for my English MA. I'm applying to doctorate programs in phil and Eng. If I don't get in anywhere, I'll take the year off and focus on my writing, publishing, conferences, and personal stuff. Then try again next year.
  4. Yea, my email accounts are synced with my phone. School email, all my personal email addys, everything. And it has a specific notification tone too. So right now, I'm chilled out, checking the results page... but come late Feb, I'll probably be like, "maybe the server settings got messed up and my email isn't forwarding, my sync got messed up, let me log online and check it... can someone send me a test email? I wanna make sure that if I get my rejection letter in Sunday morning's church service I don't miss it." Or something like that.
  5. LOL God it feels good to be back after a break... I didn't even notice the site went down.
  6. My top choice is UT Austin, but I'd be happy with whoever will take me.
  7. I like Davidson. I wrote a paper on him once. The first time we covered his work in my epistemology class I kept getting confused and calling him David Donaldson. Embarrassing.
  8. Last night's dream was me getting in to UT and due to some mix up I got put in a dorm with a bunch of freshman. Then I took a bath in a crappy tub, went out to look for someplace else to live, and ended up at a movie theater. And in the dream I was all chill about how I got in to UT, like it was no big deal. So I assume this is a sign I'm not getting in to UT.
  9. Q: Will I get into Berkeley? - Yes Q: Will I get into Princeton? Definitely! Q: Will I get into WUSTL? Ask again later Q: Will I get into Baylor? Ask again later Q: Will I get into NYU? No Way! Q: Will I get into SMU? Outlook not so good Q: Will I get into UT? Definitely? Q: Will I get into UfoH? Yes. Um... I think it's broken, b/c I know I'm not getting into all those school... lol... but I can dream, can't I?
  10. I GASPED when I read that, then I read "Kidding, of course" LOL I need another beer...
  11. My 2 grad professors told me to expect to get rejected from every school I apply to for my PhD. My undergrad profs who are writing some of my LOR expect me to get accepted and have offered to help me in almost every way possible. Currently, I have a grad professor who is supposed to have a letter written for me to be mailed and arrive in DC by Fri who, as of last night, hadn't even started it, and as of today, I haven't even heard from at all. I went to church and talked to my reverend about my applications/situation. To be honest, of all of the people I've talked to on forums and IRL, the people at gradcafe are some of the nicest, helpful, and caring people out there. I wish we could all get into our top pick schools, even if we are applying to some of the same programs. But I guess that's like asking for world peace or something...
  12. hmmm.... very interesting... I will consider all of this... Thanks guys!!
  13. I'm not sure what her letter is going to say now that she told me she's writing one letter recommending me for doctorate programs. I only have two professors in the English grad program, so I've taken like four classes with her and she knows my work well. She would be able to write a letter about my scholarly potential, but she made it sound like she's just going to write some generic catch all letter. I know UT Austin gets a LOT of applicants, but I've already talked to the Phil dept about my application and they are going to be looking out for it, so I was hoping to put my best foot forward. Sigh.
  14. Hey yall, I'm having a bit of a crisis. So I just talked to one of my profs that was going to write me LOR for my apps. I'm applying to two English doctorate programs, one Philosophy doctorate program, and one philosophy MA program. My prof told me tonight she will be "too busy" to write different letters for each program, she's just going to write one and send it to all the programs. UT's English app is due this month, UT phil is due Jan 1st, and SMU's English program is Jan 15th, and the last phil program isn't due until Feb. She's telling me now she can't write different letters. Worst part: UT's electronic system makes all the application material visible to every program a student applies to (i.e. the phil program can view all my English LOR, writing samples, SOP, and vice versa) meaning both ad comms are going to have the exact same LOR on file from one prof. Should I just tell her don't worry about my philosophy LOR and try and find someone else to write them b/c she's not going to talk about any specifics? Or will she just look like a lazy prof for submitting the same LOR, even though I'm not really supposed to know what she's writing, but she's told me and now I'm FREAKING out... Advice. plz...
  15. Aw Timshel I'm sorry. I have a Dec 2nd app due, and it's still due Dec 2nd... not the same though I know...
  16. AHH i know it's great! When the guy told me I was seriously... so happy... I will sleep soo much better tonight... I haven't had decent sleep in a while b/c UT was stressing me out. WE ALL HAVE MORE TIME!!!! YAY.
  17. YES i called b/c none of my profs have done my LOR, and the man told me they had a meeting about applications this morning, that the are extending the deadline to DEC 15TH and then I thanked him profusely. I might have teared up too. They said they are trying to update the web page now. Miracles really do happen... If you don't believe me, call them! They were so cool! (512) 471 4991 oopss i typed the number in wrong lol exhausted...
  18. Congrats, Timshel, on making progress on your SOP. My SOP is starting to come along too now that the pressure is off a bit from UT. Funny how that works...
  19. One the phone with UT. They just told me they are extending the application deadline to Dec 15th. GOD BLESS TEXAS!!
  20. Unethical? I don't think it's unethical to help out a good friend. He wasn't applying to an English program, and I didn't write anything in his SOP that he didn't try to say already in the horrid two page draft he sent me. It would have been unethical if I asked him for a hundred bucks afterwards, like i've heard of some people doing. I help people all the time with resumes and papers, but i'm not running a business. PS - I double majored as an undergrad in philosophy. I've got my own set of ethics.
  21. ??? i'm not sure if i should laugh or feel insulted, so i'll just be confused...
  22. i'll def check out that page. yea I think part of it is laying yourself out there, being sincere about it, and knowing there is still a really good chance you'll get rejected in the end. it's like a asking someone to date you for the next 4-6 years of your life... kinda... and in my friends defense, he did write an SOP, but it was so terrible, i actually laughed out loud at parts and had to stop reading. friends don't let friends submit bad SOPs.
