  1. Damn, TMCB beat me to it... I was actually doing some work xD. Congrats to the UNC admit! I console myself with the knowledge that no results from any of my schools showed up yet, but yeah, getting a little stir-crazy here!
  2. I know... All my schools traditionally notify quite late. Anyone think Stanford will notify this week, since they met last week? The list would suggest that only NYU and Pittsburgh are realistic candidates for this week...
  3. Isn't 16k ridiculously low in LA?
  4. I do agree that people should be made aware of these things, although I wouldn't necessarily consider the spreadsheet data reliable, bc people with debt are far more likely to access the page etc. in the first place. I also think we should compare this data to the general populace debt, and am not sure whether people are only reporting thier grad school data. IMO, most stipends posted here will be enough if you live frugally, and don't take too long to finish your PhD. I know that in many European countries, stipends are even lower, but because loans are not as readily available, people still graduate debt-free (or close to it). I lived on less than 1100 US$ a month (incl. rent) in one of the most expensive cities of the world, and managed fine. Going in with an open eye, and having a good idea about cost of living, as well as keeping an eye on your finances is definitely important!
  5. According to the website, Columbia's stipend is $24,335+ summer funding, though it doesn't specify how much summer funding is. Doesn't seem huge for NYC, but also doesn't seem outrageouly low. Also, the website specifically mentions funding for years 6 and 7 (which is possible, but not guaranteed), so that might be a good thing especially for people hoping to do extensive fieldwork.
  6. Don't have anything to add about wine. However, my family has a snaps distillery (is that how you call it?). My alcoholic drinks of choice thus contain considerably more alcohol than your typical wine. We do also make our own liquor from home-distilled schnaps, which I love! Regarding hearing back: It's still extremely early, I expect big things especially in the first Feb week.
  7. Congrats, and welcome. I considered applying to ANU, but felt it was too far from my home (24 hour flight). What are your research interests? Are you waiting for other schools?
  8. Anyone following this FB-debate? https://www.facebook.com/notes/mike-develin/debunking-princeton/10151947421191849 http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.4208v1.pdf For those of us applying to Princeton: Don't! In other news: We will run out of air in 2060!
  9. Both literally and figuratively Couldn't resist
  10. I don't think it's weird necessarily, but I would give them another couple of days to notify. If they said before the end of January, I would possibly call at the beginning of Feb, if I haven't heard anything. I don't think they won't admit you because you called, but I can imagine them not telling you until February.
  11. Thanks for clarifying. Strange system, but it might depend also on whether they believe you'd be able to be an effective TA? Good luck everyone!
  12. Q for the Boulder people: What does "funding decided after recruitment weekend mean?"
  13. Congrats, TMCB! Soo glad your hard work paid off! Of course, congrats also to anyone else who was accepted. I am sure all of them were well-deserved! The rest: Don't lose hope!
  14. Is anyone else regretting that they only applied to schools with historically relatively late decision times? It's starting to freak me out, honestly. Next year's applicants: Apply to at least one school with decisions in January so you won't get in the same position...
  15. If you already have an M.A./ don't mind first doing an M.A., SAIS has an amazing energy concentration, and I seem to remember reading about Columbia SIPA and Fletcher in that regard as well. SAIS and Fletcher also have good, policy-oriented PhD programs.
  16. Just got an email asking for clarification from one of my UK schools. One the one hand, it's nice, on the other, they clearly have not read my CV or my Writing Sample to be asking me this. Might just be a pre-sorting thing though!
  17. Boulder is University of Colorado?
  18. Congrats to everyone who's heard already, especially the OSU folks! I haven't heard anything, from any of my schools, in 4 different countries. I did, however, send an informal application to another program off today. Not sure I'd be thrilled to attend, but they only wanted a research proposal and my CV, so the opportunity cost was ridiculously low.
  19. What was recorded on the results page is only when PoIs get in touch with s/o before the graduate school/department sends the admission letter, I believe. Some schools, e.g. Columbia and Stanford sometimes have PoIs tell candidates before the actual decisions are out, which doesn't seem to be the case with Princeton e.g. Your PoI might still contact you afterwards, though it's also possible that they only do that at the admitted students' weekend.
  20. Just reset the file. Now everyone can view it, but only I can edit. If you wanna add something, just send me the edits (preferably in the same format, so I only have to copy-paste) or post them here, and I'll add it in! I was hoping people wouldn't care enough about that kind of stuff, but oh well...
  21. One of the advantages of Google docs is that I can restore all previous versions! That way, even tech-savvy people like TMCB can use it !
  22. This google document contains the current list of historical data for some programs. Please feel free to add (preferably in alphabetical order) other programs you applied to and their data. In case there's any editing problems, just let me know! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhWgGzdk83t_dEhqUDhLX0doYUpsbmZuN3Q2c21aZkE&usp=drive_web#gid=0
  23. I think I'll survive the shame and embarassment of a downvote, no worries! Maybe I'll get banned from this forum, and can thus concentrate on stuff again! ;-)
  24. Since a bunch of us were wondering, I just wanted to bump this thread. Nothing substantial to add!
